  • I love the atmosphere of this song.

  • This is the second best song on the album.

  • alice in chains

  • Black Gives Way To Blue is acceptable. There is still Cantrell. He brings some Lane into the the vocals. I want more.

  • THIS is music. Rock on Jerry!

  • Black gives blue is a great album

  • In my opinion, Black Gives Way To Blue is their best album. They give me goosebumps. <3

  • @NissouRinehart I can't believe here's an Alice In Chains fan that rathers

Black Gives Way To Blue over Dirt.... I know that I'd rather Dirt.

But yeah, it is a great album!

    I should buy it sometime.

Great song! would kill to hear Layne (RIP) singing it...

  • P.S.: @crossfiremechanix - I agree with that it's a good record, but never dis Ozzy!

I know Ozzy had better albums, but Scream is ain't that bad!

  • amazing solo by cantrell

  • I loved this from the moment I first overheard my older brother listening to it on the headphones. Aha.

  • the title reminds me of pink floyds "when the tigers broke free"

  • I can't stop listening to this song... it's so perfectly profound and sung!

  • @marcsousabrasil Yea, its fucking great. Fuck the haters!

  • This song has grown on me alot..I believe it's related to Layne and kind of a response to Mad Season River of Deceit in a way..

  • my favourite song on the album, which is absolutely fantastic - every song is perfect

  • People talk like Cantrell was the one who pumped heroin and cocaine into Layne. I'm very sorry for his loss, I love the band since the very beginning of the 90's, but Layne was a grown man and made his choices, so did Kurt. And people seem to forget that all the remaining band members waited for years for Layne to be free of his drug addiction, with no new records, no live shows, all of their carreers on hold. This is what they do for a living, this is what puts bread on their tables.

  • @tmota77 I agree with your points but there is some flaw in your facts. Truth is Layne wrote more then half of their songs and was a poet on paper had a strong voice as well could sing live like no other could. When a band misses lyrics as well as voice style from such a pivitol member it changes the band entirely. In regards to their new music it is still very good and should be supported but in saying that Layne wasn't AIC is bull he was the "Alice" In Chains.

  • @BacktothatgooleMusic there's more to a band than the singer. AIC has been one of my favorite bands for the last 2 decades. I'm not saying your wrong in your points but there's more than just the vocal aspect to music. It's a shame that more people don't recognize that.

  • @tmota77

They had enough "bread on their tables" from "Dirt" alone. To me this album really impresses me. Im amazed they could keep their same style and add a new element. ( although they did have 14 years to do it). This record is dynamite and hate to say it, does compete with the old AIC. However, Layne was the heart and soul of AIC. Layne lived the damn lyrics, who cares who wrote them. That's a singer.

  • Sure Layne was very talented, maybe more than Duvall ever will be. But the truth is he was already too fucked up to be productive. Even if he was alive, I'd rather have new AIC records with a new guy that does the job, than having the original band waiting for Layne to fix himself and releasing nothing but silence, like it happened for so many years. Layne ruled, but he was not AIC. In fact, Cantrell always did most of the songwriting and even lyrics. Check the song credits on previous records.

  • The issue with Duvall is he hasn't yet got the time and a substantial number of albums with his name on to be recognized by old AIC fans as a band member in his own right. He hasn't yet got the time to prove his talent and people just can't avoid comparing. But why compare? Layne is dead, it's not like there's a choice!! Unless you'd rather see the end of AIC... In time, maybe most of Duvall critics will eventually give him some credit, like it happened with Faith No More, AC/DC, Iron Maiden...

  • 3 dislikes??? who dislikes this?

  • @randallyo old Alice fans

  • This album has staying power

Sure I miss Layne and he was one of the great singers of our time, but William really does do a great job filling his shoes. I have seen AIC live twice and both times Will was fantastic, the magic is still there within the music

  • Great song

  • shit this song is brilliant.. thank jerry for making us part of your talent

  • You guys who say the new AIC sucks are a bunch of idiots. Of course this guy isn't Layne, NO ONE IS LAYNE! Be happy that AIC found this guy, he has his own style and when he performs old songs he sings them very well. I don't think there's a better substitute. Besides, this album is KILLER, why do you keep criticising it? Have you heard music nowadays, now there's something worth criticising. If you don't like new AIC go listen to something else! You could do a lot worse than the new AIC.

  • Hey guys, take a listen to the voice-over I made for this song >youtube.com/watch?v=jTDYh86YFeo

  • Are you guys talking about Ryan Dunn again? Faggots.

  • For those of you dissing Duvall, he's a good singer. Layne is better, we all know. Stop whining. On a side note, Alice is not Alice without Layne. That DOES NOT mean you can't enjoy this music. It's great music. I love this new band just as much as I love Alice in Chains. But this is Jerry Cantrell and his backing band. I have no problem with that whatsoever.

  • Apparently there are two really stupid people in this world...guess at who they are LOL

  • It sounds like Layne was singing with them (Jerry and Will), pure alice in chains, Staley we miss you so much

//// the sun never rose again for 2 persons

  • @TheEselvirus Eerie isn't it? Everytime I say the same thing someone has to berate me. Yes we know he's gone. But damn even Jerry admits that he is still haunted by Layne in "Black Gives Way To Blue".

  • This is so beautiful ;)

  • i love this band but im sorry something is missing

  • Due to the whole 'compression era' we are in, where they push for ultra-maximum volume on CD's (riding 0dB full scale as hard as possible), I have shied away from buying newer releases, but ultimately it's about the music itself, and this one was good enough for me to own, which means a lot. The cymbals are the most affected by the compression (a smeary sibilant sound that lacks clarity), but the music makes up for it, mostly. Thumbs up, especially this song - hope they match or top it next time

  • @arande3 That's true about the compression era, thanks to the "loudness war". The good news is AIC released the album on vinyl. The quality is better on vinyl and you can hear sounds missed on the digital CD format.

  • @SoulmaticBrother87 Good to know. Unfortunately I do not have a proper set-up to play vinyl. The line of receiver I own used to have an amazing phono pre-amp, but they removed it a few models ago. Anyway, good to know.

  • @arande3 Yeah, some don't know the difference b/t the CD and vinyl. The master volume is lower and you can hear more of Cantrell's guitar and DuVall's voice. He layered his voice so much on "Private Hell" and "A Looking In View". On CD, the compression buries his voice way under Cantrell. I hope on AIC's next album the CD is mastered at a lower level. I prefer low over high levels. If you need it louder, just crank the music up. There's no need for the music to be so loud right out the gate.

  • This album is mind-blasting!!!!! One of the best albums I've ever heard!!!! Alice please, we need another album!!!!!!

  • "It seems you prophesied all of this would end, Were you burned away when the sun rose again?"

  • Sounds godsmacky

  • @skyehoyt1971

You realize the irony of what you're saying, right?

  • @skyehoyt1971 Yes I do my friend, dig them both. Always under the influence of Alice In Chains.

  • @skyehoyt1971 like voodoo?:)

  • @farts796 you know

  • When the apocalypse happens and I need to find the proverbial mighty sword to restore the world to its former glory i will be listening to this.

  • i wish i could play guitar like jerry cantrell haha

  • black gives on to blue huh... fuckin niggers are takin over my music too. leave hockey alone!!!

  • @rainbolt1982 You're a racist piece of shit. Why do you have racial slurs to complain about music? If you don't like the music; then don't listen to it, and listen to music you do like. If you're going to complain to others with racial slurs, go complain to the rest of your damn redneck friends.

  • @rainbolt1982 I REALLY hope that was a joke.

  • seems to me that this album, with lyrics like "selling out for the score" and "yes it hurts to know you're bought" makes fun of the crappiness of modern rock pretty well. lol, I remember QOTSA mocking modern rock almost 10 years ago with songs for the deaf. all that fratboy nickelback stuff shading into whiny emo stuff is all just so damned stale. good thing some 90's people with talent survived to keep producing real music.

  • My personal favorite track on this record. It reminds me of the fall season... it's hypnotizing.

  • This is the perfect song to wake up to.

  • "It seems you prophesized, all of this would end..." the words ring true for Layne. AIC is no longer built on the pain of addiction, but of the pain of loss. Making this album all the more amazing and remorseful.

  • @PurpleIsAmazin I agree 1000% This AIC album is amazing. I miss Layne but AIC should live on, they were and still are an important band.

  • WHOS SINGING THIS WILL OR JERRY? SEEMS JERRY SINGS 60 PERCENT OF THIS ONE

  • @grungeguy83 Sounds to me it goes like this: for the verses Jerry takes the lead vocal spot and Will harmonizes with him on the top end until the 2nd half, where Jerry sings both lead and harmony parts. For the chorus Jerry sings both lead and harmony parts.

  • @SoulmaticBrother87 you are right...mike inez just told me yesterday. i love jerrys voice and i hope that he stays on lead on future albums but i am afraid the next one will be duvall....and i am not big on his voice in aic but i love comes with the fall and hes great for guitar and backing vocals with aic. if you want to hear will la, last of my kind is him only and to me it sounds like 80s stuff. no disrespect to him but thats just my opinoin...and he seems like a hell of a guy

  • @grungeguy83 Oh yeah, CWTF is a great band. It's no surprise Jerry had Will as his 1st choice to replace Layne. I think AIC's next album will be more 50/50 where Jerry or Will sings lead and the other sings harmony. I guess they only let Will sing lead on Last of my Kind so people wouldn't judge him too much until they get used to his voice. They didn't let Will get too loose with his singing but I'm sure on the new albums and EPs they'll let him have at it.

  • you are right....mike inez told me yesterday

  • This song is amazing. Its such a great question for those of us who are the "little boy made a mistake" type people. We remember the prophecys we made. We look for any evidence that supports a no answer but in our hearts we know the truth.

  • I want this song to play when i die

  • THEY SHOULDVE WON THAT GRAMMY!!!! goddamn I almost cried when they didnt get it. I listen to all sorts of music, but in my opinion this is the best album of the decade!!!! very creative very personal. no overproduced filler bullshit that other bands have been throwing out (cough ozzy). some bands just try too hard to stay on top but alice in chains dont give a shit and dont compromise their style. dont get me wrong I know they worked their asses off on this.

  • @crossfiremechanix \m/ Very well said. However, it's irrelevant because the Grammy's aren't worth a shit anyway... and they never have been.

  • Fuckin great

  • simply bad ass at 2:02!!!!! simple, but incredible!

  • Fuck this song is hot.

  • i absolutely love it

  • i absoultely love it

  • @NiggerButcher99

    I am not a fag :(

  • I masturbate to this xD

  • i neva really got in2 AIC until they brought ths album out. Probli one of the best albums iv bought, awsme to see the old rock kumin bak. LOVE IT!

  • @trills10 coming back? it didnt go anywhere, it just found a more selective audience. but i know what you mean, it makes me glad as well

  • Beautiful!

  • Song is trippy.

  • love this song.Alice is my favorite band of all time!!

  • on of the most emotional solos ever at 2:02

  • Comment removed

  • Lovin' the sound of the tabla in this. It's another great track from a brilliant album. actually this is my album of the year. it's so fkn terrific.

  • the solo remembers me the whale & wasp

  • all I can say is GOOSEBUMPS!!

  • @ SuperUnknown i think thats very true

  • I love how there are so many elements to this song. They make it so awesome to listen to.

  • Everyone has a right to an opinion, but your opinion does not mean shit without facts behind it. So for everyone who ever thought Alice should have changed their name, I am 100 % against you. Yes Layne came up with the name Alice In Chains but Jerry, Sean, Mike and Layne were like family and no matter how many songs they write for Layne hear on out there is no better tribute to Layne's legacy then going out there using the name he came up with. Long live Layne and long live Alice

  • @kevinAIC33 Well said! At least AIC is still putting out good music.

  • Comment removed

  • @Totalmachine09 fuck them

  • Who else hates all these so called "fans" who bitch and mourn this isn't alice in chains anymore? They make my fucking blood boil!

  • @Totalmachine09

    +100000000000000

  • @Totalmachine09 they're not fans of alice in chains.....they're fans of layne staley (RIP). let them complain...meanwhile...we are enjoying the music. but i know exactly how you feel.

  • @Totalmachine09 I don't hate these misguided AIC fans... I pity them. So lost in their own self pity and anger that they can't enjoy awesome music anymore.

  • @Totalmachine09 I know. Alice in Chains wasn't JUST Layne Staley.

  • @Totalmachine09 Agreed. I think Black Gives Way to Blue is some of their best material.

  • 2 dumb asses missed the thumbs up button.

  • this song is sublime - true music still exists and here is the proof. I'm too young to have ever seen AIC play live with Layne but I can tell that the integrity of the music is as strong as ever.

  • the song has a mysterious quality to it that sounds hella awesome

  • Love them still!!!!! Thanks for givin this on air!!!!!

  • Best sound in rock n roll history.

  • A M A Z I N G

  • Alice in Chains is God.

  • @scottmackeen are gods. lol, they ARE the best after all.

  • awesome song they really have a one of a kind sound and yes it sucks that layne signed off but the remaining members have bounced back despite the big loss. RIP layne you are missed and best of luck to the group.... they still have worthwhile music to put out... it's not played or commercialized.

  • A beautiful song, a remembrance of the old days and feels like "my" Alice again. Layne maybe gone, but the soul still remains! Please keep it alive Jerry.. it runs through you my friend...

  • @myarmor wow!!

  • @myarmor After what Jerry did to Layne? Lest we forget Jerry is the one who ,,,,the reason Layne is gone. And to get a soundalike singer? Good song though..

  • such a great song and a great album

  • my faverot song off the new Alice in chains cd :D

  • Brilliant!!!

  • to me it sounds like jerry is singin about layne is this song selling out for the score comon dude is still deeply hurt from the loss of his friend i think we all r rip layne miss the shit out of u man alice in chains in a band that has stood the test of time in my book

  • Sounds like it could've been on sap or jar of flies... Amazing track....

  • i could swear i heard layne on this. it's fucking freaky. i love this song.

  • @chandlerblancaflor So I am not the only one... I swear Layne was EVP'ing on this one...

  • @DarthMorbius1977 yeah man this sounds like something layne would have done, damn i miss him Du'Vall is bad ass though

  • @chandlerblancaflor Me too man me too who knows maybe layne took over wills voice to sing one more song with the boys ya never know.

  • Excellent song, thanks Jerry.............R.I.P. Layne, we miss ya!

  • saw them at sonisphere. awesome xD

  • love it

  • You spelled 'squeal' incorrectly in the lyrics.

  • beautifull song :D

  • VAI SER TÃO FUCKING FIXE!!!!!! :D

  • Bellissima!

Secondo me le migliori dell'album sono:

    -When The Sun Rose Again

    -Acid Bubble

    -Take Her Out

    -Check My Brain

    -Your Decision

  • amazing! AND I'M GOIN' TO SEE THEM IN PORTUGAL WOOHOOO!

  • @palitos1320

    EU TAMBÉM!!!!

  • I like so much this song...old Alice is old Alice, but is better to think Alice is back

    parece cumbia en unas partes

  • that solo is FUCKING HAUNTING

  • good new music like this is hard to come by these days

  • they really went back to basics and it paid off well on the album.

  • I love it !

  • @mawhar

Hit the fucking nail on the head!

  • Amazing CD this is the Chains man! love this album so much meaning behind every song on here there are a few sad ones but the overall album is steller and i was actually surprised when the album was this good. Rock on AIC! there gonna be in Van B.C soon cant wait!

  • This is my favorite album of the decade so far. I agree with you about the overall feel of the album. It seems to have a healing or redemtive quality to it.

  • One of my favorites off 'Black Gives Way to Blue'. In my opinion the raw power and soul that they poured into this album is equivalent to that of their old work. The majority of modern rock pales in comparison to this.

    Rock on AIC.

  • My friend played this song for me this morning, she thought I would like it. I never thought Alice In Chains would play an acoustic song (and in odd times!). I love it.

  • AIC has played lots of acoustic songs (layered with electric for solos of course).

I love that they can pull off that balance really well.

  • they did play acoustic in the past too

  • Some of AiCs best stuff is acoustic e.g Dont Follow, Nutshell, Got me Wrong etc, but alot of their electrics sound class when played acoustically - check out MTV Unplugged album - probably some of the best AiC work Ive heard.

  • Tengent, some of old AIC's best songs are acoustic.

  • Jar of Flies??

  • Even though I might not be able to hold the tune, and my wife begs to differ, I love to belt this song out. Thank you AIC!

  • keep it up man

  • seems you prophesied, all of this would end. fucking end all. This song makes me sad, but my one and only tatt is of AIC, this album is very good, but man, this bridge makes me sad.

  • simplemente perfecto

  • this is one of best of songs of alice...

    easy but BEST...

  • I love the bridge in this song.

  • Agreed

  • If AIC doesn't at least get NOMINATED (should win), for any Grammys or anything of that sort.... TRAVESTY. SAD. PITIFUL. DISAPPOINTING..... STUPID!!

  • They are nominated! but you watch.. fucking nickleback will win! yuck!

  • common don't even look forward to that...after our 90's rockstars died the media forgot about them!

  • AIC ftw

  • Música perfeita!

  • I'm not even done listening to this song for the 1st time and it's still fucking awesome

  • awesome

  • new album:

    1. This song

    2. A Looking In View

    3. Your Decision

    4. Private Hell

    5. Black Gives Way To Blue

didn't find the rest of the songs that interesting but the album kills modern "rock"

  • damn your list sucked not trynna bash u or nothing lol

  • lol, that's all fine but theres no way I didn't at least pick the objectively better half of the album. anyway, it is great to see more songs from Cantrell. Every year he didn't release new music was seriously painful. I hope he releases an album every year now that he's back.

may the shittiness of macho fratboy modern rock be burned away as AIC risesn again.

  • mine

    last of my kind

    this song

    Black gives way to blue

    Check my Brain

    A looking in view

  • @merman08

    mine

    Check My Brain

    Take Her Out

    Your Decision

Private Hell or Last of my Kind

    Black Gives Way to Blue

but this song is also great especially the solo

  • Great solo. Too short...
