i was looking for a good holder like this but at same time i would be able to use a case... and i finally saw your video, plus i got exacly same case :D
Great review a gave you 5 ***** Stars! Just 2 questions:
1- Will this cradle work with my iPod Touch's pre-loaded "maps app" (if i choose not to buy a GPS app)?
2- What is the advantage of using this Magellan Car Kit verses a Bluetooth "GPS receiver"? Some new GPS receivers (size of a thumb drive) that come in a small keychain that connect wirelessly to your mobile device via iPod Touch/ iPhone Bluetooth (or am I mistaken and is this and the Tom Tom the only two which support 3.0 Firmware?)
1) It will not work with the "Maps" app because it is an off-board App. You will need an on-board application (maps already preinstalled) like ours Magellan Roadmate App.
2)Some advantages of using the Magellan Car Kit versus a GPS receiver are the Bluetooth Hands-Free calling, amplified speaker, windshield/dash mount, and it charges your iPhone while navigating!
Thank you so much. I ended up buying the Magellan Car Kit. I love it and the Magellan App is perfect for my iPod Touch since I can still access maps and nearby store searches even when I am without WiFi or not using GPS since all the data is an "on-board application"!!! All together it did set me back a 'pretty penny' but I really like the User Interface and Hardware! Thanks.

Are you sure this will not work with the iPod touch 1st generation? The one without volume controls on the side? I would rather much purchase the magellan and not the tomtom. If someone could find out that would be great.
According to Magellan on theiphoneblog, I quote..."The iPod 1st gen will work with the App and Car Kit but the Performance will be much slower."
Keep in mind that I do not own a 1st gen iPod Touch, so I have no way of confirming this. I hope this helps you with your decision though. Have a good one. :-)
I am not positive of the exact location of the SiRF Star GPS receiver on the actual mount, but I will do some digging to find out. I will report back with my findings. Stay tuned...
Just out of curiosity though, why would it matter where the GPS receiver is located? Let me know. Thanks.
I was wondering as if it was in the bracket that the iPhone sits in then it would matter if you had it orientated landscape or portrait (I prefer the map in landscape TBH) to give an accurate position and pickup of the sat signals.
Awesome . Pre-ordered one of these over a week ago and can not wait to get this thing , very interested in seeing a vid with the Magellan Map APP , and to figure out which app would be the best for this
I'm loving mine , I decided to pick up the Navigon App for mine and it works great
as soon as I pop the Unit into the cradle it has satellite lock
The only thing I wish you could do, as I'm using the IPod touch, is someone sync the bluetooth with my Palm Pre so I could use it as hands free . I've done a search in pairing mode but I guess the only way you can sync with it is to actually have an IPhone and plug it in
does it work with i go or n drive

@CORRUPTION1NC You wouldn't need one since it has a built-in GPS chip that enhances GPS signal

Hi Shane,

Cheers for the reply, Barry

Hi there,
The GPS chip is in the middle left of the car kit.

So will this work on iPod Touch 3g?
NeosBack1 2 years ago
Yes, from what I understand it works on any 2G iPod Touch or newer. :-)
ShaneXman 2 years ago
will this work on other apps like Navigon or Tomtom or copilot live

yes

According to Maggie (Magellan Rep)...
"Unofficially, Magellan's car kit should provide GPS to the first gen iPhones similar to the TomTom car kit. Officially, we have not yet tested."
I hope this helps. :-)

how adjustable is the mount? I have a otter box iphone case and it is slightly larger than most cases
blakelp 2 years ago
It shouldn't be a problem, but I guess we can't be 100% sure until someone tries it. Wanna send me your case? LOL ;-)

medic739,
That's fantastic. Glad to hear everything is working out properly.
I think you will be pleased to know, that you CAN pair your Palm Pre or any other Bluetooth enabled cell phone.
From Magellan's site:
In the Bluetooth menu for your cell phone begin searching for devices, then select the Magellan Car Kit.
If prompted, enter the code 1234.
Pairing is now complete.
Once paired, the Magellan Premium Car Kit will automatically connect with your cell phone when it is
in range.
