when one listens to her .... one wonders are those that don't like her completely tone deaf... the musicality... the pitch... the phrasing... the interpretation... the story telling... all flawless.... but there is no accounting for taste or the lack of it
Everytime I hear this song, Ithink of the movie "The Sandpiper" with the beautiful Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Babs sings it so beautifully, but I have the 45 rpm record at home by Tony Bennett. They would be a great duo together if they have not done this great song. You thinkk . ..
@-ezabdullah-Connie Francis did record this song, not with a bossa nova beat, but Connie did a great version! i have to listen to Peggy Lee's rendition now because i don't remember hearing it before. many great singers of the 60's recorded this. i think Dean Martin was one of the few singers who did not record this.Did any other singers not record this?that is a good trivia question, huh?
The shadow of your smile When you are gone Will color all my dreams And light the dawn Look into my eyes, my love, and see All the lovely things you are to me A wistful little star Was far too high A tear drop kissed your lips and so did I Now when I remember spring All the joy that love can bring I will be remembering The shadow of your smile Now when I remember spring All the love that joy can bring I will be remembering The shadow of your smile...
This version is superb. The orchestra is stupendous. Barbra is a wonderfully talented singer. Her voice really complimented the arrangement and vice versa. It would interesting to hear a Connie Francis or Shirley Bassey version with this orchestra. My my my, did Barbra know how to pick her band.
@mikekaye71 Just heard Johnny's version...it was alright but for my taste I thought Englebert did a better job on the guys side with the song. Would prefer to hear Johnny sing Chances Are or Too Much Too Little Too Late. Off to listen to Tony Bennet's version next...going to bet it is better than Johnny's. Of course, this is all just a matter of taste after all.
@buffalmacco76 I think Sassy's is the best too. Frank Sinatra would have agreed. He claimed that Sarah Vaughan taught him everything he knew about singing.
@avesraggiana Yes I knew this. They even sang together at the London Palladium for a week-concerts along with Count Basie. It was 1975. I have an audio recording of that. But I guess they were not so friends....
Kiedy odszedłeś Wspomnienie twojego uśmiechu Będzie kolorować wszystkie moje marzenia I je rozjaśniać aż do świtu Spójrz mi w oczy Kochanie i zobacz Wszystkie słodycze Którymi jesteś dla mnie Nasza mała nostalgiczna gwiazda była zbyt daleko i wysoko łza spłynęła na twoje usta A ja wiec je ucałowałam Teraz, kiedy wspominam wiosnę i wszystkie radosne chwile Na zawsze mi zostanie Obraz twojego uśmiechu
Just another example of the talent pool located in Brooklyn, NY.... Ms. Streisand was blessed with Perfect Pitch as a singer...which is not a common thing..Almost unheard of in the new generation of female singers out today...Oh...did I mention the String arrangement is to die for...Thank you AsylumDeneye for Posting this Gem...on of my favorites along with "He Touched Me"....Peace & Love
Yes I have heard every recorded vocal version of this tune. Some are wonderful no doubt, but again Barbras musicality and timing etc.. are simply flawless.. just perfectly arranged and performed... who else makes us feel goosebumps? I am happy to listen to your opinion...
I love Peggy's version of this.. Barbra Streisand's version is good technically, but seems a bit cold and affected to me. I love the warmth of Peggy's version.
For me this is the definitive version of this lovely song. Barbra's vocal is soft, romantic, almost lilting--and the musical arrangement has a sweetly sophisticated bossa nova swing. Simply gorgeous.
no one can "sing" this song like the great Jack Sheldon, who it was written for. Only his trumpet can give it the justice it deserves.... no vocalist will ever do justice....
Well...this song has been covered by many...and so many have commented on who sings it best...seems most prefer Peggy Lee's version on the female side...for me this Streisand version is tops on the female side.
Streisand almost always goes away from great American songbook stuff. I think during her younger years she was just feeling her uniqueness. Most "standards" are expected to be sung in the same spirit of the "original" and that didn't fit her being such a pioneer. I wish she tackled these songs right after she did her first broadway album. Her vibe then would have been better than Rondstadts run of oldies during the same period.
@samgamgeeisbrilliant As much as I actually like Astrud Gilberto...her version just doesn't work for me. Certainly I could hear her sing the Girl from Ipanema over and over and other songs in that genre. I also see that Astrud sings "Light My Fire" and I must say I don't have the courage to click on that vid. At least not tonight. If you like Astrud Gilberto, give her duet with George Michael a go...song is Desafinado. Tell me what you think.
@80sweregr8 It was nice! Thanks for sharing! I love nice conversations about music like this. Babs definitely knocked this one out of the park. Desafinado was pretty good, and I bet it'd be better after I listen a few times more.
@alexjrmarino I know in another post you indicated Sarah Vaughan sang your favorite version of this song. I just heard her live 1963 performance. It fell into the alright category for me...so much slower than Babs version. Just comes down to taste, preference and style I suppose.
@80sweregr8 yeah i found Sarah Vaughan a bit rehearsed, too.I meant for another song "Easy to live" which suits her style pretty much. Of course we take about 30% of the real feeling of being there that night.. anyway, these girls are the best, much better than the crap people are used to listen to nowadays-loud and desentisized and it's such a shame.. Girls like Anita O'day and Billie Holiday and Ella changed the way how women sing and behave on stage since then
"IMHO, the very best, most original version i've ever heard hands down of the shadow of your smile is by Jonny Fair & The Xtrordinaires. It's still up here last i checked, give it a listen & you'll see what i mean. Very smooth & warm. Made me want to pour a martini & sit on the couch with appetisers & that special someone... *smile*
