  • for anybody that didn't know. tony hicks was an apprentise electrician before he came a professional musician in 1963 when he joined the hollies.

  • very nice, amazing!

  • My only criticism of this cool performance is the wardrobe.

  • @Trex100 Puffy shirts?

  • Comment removed

  • Great voice!!!!

  • very good song from the hollies, i saw them live in bremen in the year 2009 i guess

  • i have loved this song for 40 years - thanks hollies!

  • the hollies should have been alot bigger than they were. they are one incredible band.they got alot of airplay here in new zealand over the years.

  • i love this song. this song plays at my job and i find myself belly dancing

  • I love the banjo on this song. Allan Clarke is a great singer and Tony Hicks is an incredible guitarist.

  • stop stop stop all the dislikes

  • They never should stop, stop, stop.....

  • @Shriked couldn't say it better myself. : )

  • my god are they hott -- even in those girlie pirate shirts these three are just incredibly sexy ;)

  • One Fantastic Song.

  • always LOVED, LOVED this song!!....thanks so much for posting this clip...

  • The original puffy shirt! XD

  • Mmm, nasty...love that! If only you were there....

  • Nash made his choice...and the Hollies carried on!

  • Graham Nash..... that's what's missing. It's like no salt, no taste, having no Nash.

  • @NewHopeNashFan You sure spend A LOT of time trashing the Hollies without Nash and his replacement, Terry Sylvester!! I, on the other hand, haven't wasted a second of my life viewing any Nash videos. I think you secretly LOVE the Sylvester-era Hollies (and can anybody blame you?) because you spend all of your time there!!

  • Comment removed

  • @heymaryann1 No further comment. I should not have egged you on, that's all. I prefer CSN, you prefer Sylvester. That's fine.

  • It's one of the best and fascinating things in their repertoire I ever heard. Hypnotizing rhythm, brilliant banjo, rhythmical yet captivating lyrics, spotless harmony structure and unique vocals. It’s so curious what a little adventure in New York can do to an artist’s mind…

The only problem is shirts. Who was their dress adviser?...

  • @elirosen1391 thanks for the info! : )

  • with one word: AMAZING

  • Classic!!!!

  • Those fucking shirts..LOL

  • Amazing!!

  • @jtch1000 thanks so much for that : ) and yes I agree Bobby is an amazing drummer : )

  • Bobby was and still is one of the greatest drummers of all times.

  • Does anyone know what the white knob thing that Tony has on the middle of the neck part of the banjo is, just noticed it and I know nothing about stringed guitar-like instruments. : )

  • @60s4everanever it is to tune the fifth string on the banjo. look at the regular tuning keys - there are four.

  • @60s4everanever That's the high G string. The rest of the instrument is tuned D-G-B-D. I don't know why the string is there. I'm a guitar guy. I can tell you that that is the way Keith Richards tunes his guitars.

  • Love hearing Allan speak. He's very charming & it's sweet that what he almost said would've been considered risque.

  • I never knew that a BANJO was the source of that wonderful sound! And I want those shirts!!! Every try to find a puffed shoulder shirt these days? I had this on 45 when I was 10 years old in 1966 and if not mistaken it was the flip side of Bustop?

  • I took up belly dancing at the age of 58, most of the time we danced to traditional middle eastern tunes. But it seemed every time i went to a major class even 200 miles from home, we always ended up the session with this song, improvisation, and lots of laughs

  • i am 55 and still have the original record. i learned to play guitar by those 4 and 5 chord songs. ain't rock great.

  • LOVE IT :)

  • theres no escaping those roots. yeah and uh you know the rest, carry on .

  • 1:37, hehe. Is the older guy enjoying this, or just tolerating this to impress the lady next to him? Wouldn't be the first time.

  • Rap is crap!

  • Yes, they're great! And their sisters' blouses fitted them really well, lol

  • I agree elirosen1391!!! I'm 14 and hate rap it has to be the worst music ever made! Bring back the good stuff from the 60s!!!! : )

  • Make love to me Allan!

  • Heart this for the first time today. For some reason it reminds me of early Pink Floyd- especially some of Rick Wright's piano work. I always thought Floyd was absolutely unique, but as I explore music from the 60's, I'm beginning to see where they obtained some of their influences.

  • That banjo is hella cool!

  • great band very underated , harmonies are just brilliant

  • @andymac621 Agreed 100% Spot on comments

  • @Terrilliser Stop living in the past, it's over!

  • @rustysnoot I say Allan Clarke, is the King of Voices for English artists.

  • lovethe hollies love the song love the show.. hate that shirt.

  • When it comes to the Hollies, Tony Hicks is the shit! The man shines like a supernova on every Hollies hit! This time on the banjo.

  • i looked like the guy playing the banjo when i was 15

  • from the decades where you actually needed talent.

  • graham nash was still in the band?

  • USE TO SEE TONY HICKS (the banjo player ) AT THE TWISTED WHEEL IN MANCHESTER ALL NIGHTERS 1969/70 AT THE TORCH IN STOKE AND THE EARLY DAYS OF WIGAN CASINO . NOT ONLY A GREAT ALL ROUNDER MUSICIAN / VOCALS TOO , BUT A GREAT SOUL MUSIC DANCER

  • I feel like Terry Sylvester was an acceptable replacement for Graham Nash. He's no Nash, but definitely not a bad choice.

  • Amen jmgajewski !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was crazy about him as a young girl ! I still drool over all these old videos. The one that is the best is the air that I breathe-- he has that come hither look and youknow he is doing it on purpose ! :)

  • It's a naughty song...and they are very naughty boys.

  • people talk about van halen, sambora, mick mars...i dont know who this guy is on the banjo but he is awesome!!

  • @TheCaptainmarmalade Tony Hicks! Correct he is awesome.

  • Ha ! ~ the audience at 1.35 !!

  • Wow! Live.....luv the banjo! Where is Graham Nash?

  • Wow! Live.....luv the banjo!

  • tony hicks so cute !!!

  • I told you: Tony Hicks, most under-appreciated musician. Look what the heck he's doing on the banjo!

  • @MattWhatsGoinOn I can't state that Tony is the most under-appreciated musician, as I'm sure there's plenty.

However, Tony had the kick to the feel of the song. He knew what to bring in.

Watching Terry Sylvester, his left hand does not further anymore, than at the top of the guitar.

With this song, it wouldn't have happened without the voices and Tony Hicks' Banjo.

  • @MsDragon1968 Wouldn't presume to say THE most under-appreciated musician, as i'm sure there are many, but A most under-appreciated one, is what I meant - invaluable in their sound. Will take a closer look at Terry...

  • @MattWhatsGoinOn I'm sure Terry was under-rated too, with other Hollies tracks. However, with this song in particular, it was the Banjo, bringing in the kick to feel of the song. In which, they didn't really need any other instrument overpowering the Banjo.

I've been speaking to a guy here in Australia, who was with one of Australia's bigger bands in the eighties, after watching Tony Hicks playing the Banjo in this clip. Simon was classed as Australia's best guitarist during the times.

  • @MsDragon1968 Which Australian band?

  • @boogiefever1985 Australian Crawl

  • @MattWhatsGoinOn I asked Simon, if he's ever played a Banjo. He quoted NO! However, with him playing many types of guitars and the violin, he has wished over time that he did learn to play the Banjo.

  • This would have to be the catchiest song The Hollies ever performed.

I love the Banjo in this.

There's certain musical instruments that died over time, when they shouldn't have and brought in great sounds.

  • I love this band, not prog not pop. They did some very cool stuff.I was at two of the gigs in Toronto one of wich Nash was back but Clark was the man. This is a cool vid

  • Go Tony!!!! Banjo no less.

  • @musicians: Check the VOX acoustic 12, I also saw him with a PHANTOM 12-string, as you can see from the 1967 video under suggestions, to the right. Did he/they have a deal with VOX? I think I saw a VOX amp in the background, too, if I'm not mistaken. The question is then, anyone know why didn't he use a RIC 12, as many others of that epoca did (and still do, of course)? 3/27/2011

  • 1969? Really? That late?

  • @StevieCoyleMusic No, not really. ;) This show might've been from '69, but the song was definitely on the charts in 1967.

  • actually now that i listen to it more it sounds better but still never as good and 50's rock and roll

  • also is that a guy or a girl on the right ?

  • i dont like this music very much i wish they sang 50's rock and roll it sounds so much better than this .

  • I believe the kinks also said "oy" at the end of one of their songs and for the life of me, I can't think of it!

  • Tony reminds me of the kid who played Tanner Boyle in the original Bad News Bears movie.

  • What does Tony Hicks say at the .26 second mark? To which Alan Clarke replies, "I almost said that......"

  • @kyzrsze Tony said "Oy". I have a British friend who yells that at my sons when they are terrorizing each other. I always thought it was funny that they never listen to me but all she has to do is utter that one little word and they stop what they are doing instantly.

  • Reminds me of Beirut.

  • Great live performance by the Hollies. Thanks for posting.

  • wow this sounds more like a mix of american folk and old country with some bluegrass

  • A true gem from this great and underappreciated group. One often forgets this song when going through their discography but this is a diamond in the rough. Tony Hicks

and the banjo really make this and as always, Alan Clark's great vocals. Added to my favorites! Thanks for posting.

  • Terry is absolutely gorgeous.

  • I love the Hollies and especially to Allan Clarke but their shirts look like one of my blouses!!!

  • @rbkpetroleo in 69 everybody wore them even the guys that didn't have the body for it

  • @morganredneck You're right, just that the video reminded me of my blouses in the 80's! :-))

  • @rbkpetroleo i never had the body ,but i wished i did

  • @morganredneck When we are young, fashion is fashion and it works for everyone, no matter if it suits us or not, right? so..... I guess you were fashion in those wonderful years!

  • Beales, rolling stones.... those are just tiny peaces of much more................

  • Long hair, bell bottoms, smoking up, hanging out in the village (Yorkville if you live in Toronto during the 60's ) and of course the Hollies. Sweet memories,

  • Thanks for this and for all you do. Wanna favorite this one if I didn't already.

  • Awesome performance!

  • How beck then music was innocent and beautiful.

  • great band!!.... stop stop stop this rap crap :P

  • @Terrilliser Couldnt agree more, it was alright in the 70s but it has not progressed 30 years on!

  • @Terrilliser Amen!

  • @Terrilliser Rap has purpose. It makes us appreciate real music ; )

  • @banditdozeryogi If The Hollies were around today, they'd be called "Al C feat. Golden Graham and Li'l Tony" and we'd see them on Vevo banners wearing obnoxious bling and making contrived nigger gestures.

  • @tcvicesquad Stop Stop Stop, I'll be having nightmeres! : )

  • @Terrilliser Rap isn't hurting the music industry, it's the new rock sound. Rap is another genre of music and is performed by acts who grow up horrible youths and "rapping" is their only hope in hell of making money.

  • Respond to this video... We can't stop rap now. But we can choose to ignore it. Whether or not people wanna deal with it, this is the good stuff.

  • Hollies were a great band...thank god I was born in 1950...so many great bands...beatles,stones,stevie you name it

  • I immediately liked this the first time I heard it. Wow!

  • J bet there are no women there with pants on. All the men look so nice with their suits on.

  • Yes, the Brits had the vibe in those days . . .

  • did anyone notice that the three stooges were here.

  • LynnaRenae - you didn't mention Bernie Calvert in your lineup! One of THE best bass players of the '60s and '70s! I, too, have been a fan since '64, '65. Not picking on you, just reminding you that Bernie was such an important part of thier rhythm section - he and Bobby.

  • Terry Sylvester, Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks on banjo, and Bobby Elliot on drums...been a fan since 65! Lynne AUSTIN,TEXAS

  • What are the names of each of them in this particular personnel lineup?

  • im surprised that banjo didnt explode. He rocked the shit out of that thing!

  • don't get me wrong, the hollies rock. they have some of the greatest songs ever.

but this looks like an amish mother singing with her two retarded sons. just sayin.

  • @boomer1981abc You're right ....hahahaha !!!

  • my penis thats goood

  • I sure miss the 1960s. My children were born in the 1960s. Things in general were much better back then. The music was MUCH better, thats for sure.

  • The best type of music where all of the band members had great talent!

  • lip-syncing at it's best.

  • What Do Ypu Base That acusation on ( it Doesn't Even Look Like They Are Lip Syncing) You Hateing Asshole

  • i love the girly shirts...

  • a little girl? he wouldn't beable to say that NOW!

an honorable, decent, gorgeous, clever guy like him would be an outcast

    xxx

  • @444coole444 get off you troll -__-

  • Ok... this may be a dumb question, so bare with me... Is that Graham Nash on the far left? It doesn't look like him. Am I just too used to the beard look?

  • @daisykid No, not Nashy, unfortunately. On bango is Tony Hicks; to the left of Clarke is Terry Sylvester (Nash's replacement); behind Sylvester is Bernie Culvert and Bobby Elliott on drums.

  • People looked happier in those days.

  • Comment removed

  • @jdisensi1 Although it's wrong to idealise the past I think people were happier in the 1960's from what my parents say. I was born in 1969, but there are reasons why I think my parents were right. There was more job security and sense of community, more national pride and better music. Job security and sense of community were going by the 1980's, but we still had a great music and fashion scene. Now we have lost these too, though we are still a materially rich nation.

  • @britishfirstandlast

despite, they are unable to clap on the beat :D

  • One of my first 45 records I bought was 'Look Through Any Window' and I have to say that if you couldn't play your instrument or sing you didn't get very far. It's obvious that these guys took time out to practice their songs. Today it's I'll buy a home studio and play my own stuff and blah, blah, blah.....So sad.

  • WOW.....

  • Alan was very nice looking in his younger days

  • @bcrfan21 Absolutely bloody gorgeous in my book! He was my first crush!

  • Excellent performance of this great song.

  • THIS is the song I fell in love with the Hollies by! During this time, they came to the US and was one several TV programs. I watched them all and fell in love with Tony Hicks!

  • For mid-eastern girls.

  • I want to know also: What is it that Tony says?

  • Listening to the Hollies just confirms my opinion the the Brits are the most musically talented people on the planet.

  • @OysterLava Couldn't agree more!

  • @OysterLava - Definitely!! Mind you, I am English ; )

  • @OysterLava They are also the best looking - especially Tony!!!

  • @OysterLava

    they used to be i agree......but nowdays..well i woudn't say so!

  • OMG Allan!!!!

  • What does Tony say at the beginning that makes them laugh?

  • @sparrowbananno I think he said Oy.

  • hey i used to wear those puffy shirts...prelude to hendrix and prince or whatever he calls himself these days! hahaha!

  • worthless junk

  • Love the little puffy sleeved shirts

  • check out Terry's adorable smile @ 51

  • Tony Hicks is a fantastic musician!

  • This is bloody marvellous. They were THE top group of the 60s.

  • Tony Hicks...soooo hot! Those bedroom eyes....sigh...

  • When I was a little girl I had a huge crush on Tony Hicks (mid 70's) This brings back so many memories.

  • To larrydh2, hope you don't mind my opinion but for me, I reckon it's 'live', the reason being that they could only really lip-sync to a version they knew or had practised really well, and most likely that would be their 'studio' version. I have not heard any significant variations on this song by them, but for me, IMHO the biggest clue is the final banjo strum at the end - this is not on the studio version (I have it on '45 & LP) and that's not part of it - it fades with no final end.

  • @c00kee Tony hicks is great on the banjo i think this definiately live too, Im 62 watched lots of groups live in the 60s and 70s and they had to be good live or else they would not last ..Just my opinion

  • @c00kee

I agree, it is live, but the first time I heard it I thought that there were some backing track in there. I don't think that now. The banjo is different from the record and the drum sound is different as well, the cymbals are very subdued here.

  • @c00kee I could be wrong, but I've read that Terry was very new for this concert, replacing Graham. They sang and played live over a backtrack to support the sound. Terry soon locked his harmony in and was at least as good as Graham (some say better).

  • Tony hicks is talent personified!!!

  • Banjo

  • greaT

  • amazing all the creativity and imagination in the 60's in England. The Beatles like the tip of a mountain range of icebergs, so much good stuff. Love the utterly non-standard use of the banjo - brilliant.
