  • i applaud you! wonderful!

  • Your Hair looks sooo good, thanks for all the Tips !!!

  • For some reason, I still don't get what in the world a "Wash n go" is. Maybe, I'm just not paying close attention when watching these videos.

  • Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. I thought I was the only one who didn't think that protective styling, twist outs, braid outs, or even combing was necessary. It's like all of these natural forums condition people to believe that theyhave to do these things in order for their hair to grow and not be tangled, however, I decided to go against that. I BCed for a 2nd time, and have been sporting twas. I wash hair once a week, and only finger detangle too. Everyone thought I was crazy at first but..

  • @trizzytrix when they realized that my hair was doing just fine, they let me be. I really was going to start a fokti hair journal or hair account to prove that all of this manipulation isn't NECESSARY for our hair. One combing session can ruin the look of your coils permanently. I'm so happy to see that you have a similar hairtype as me. I have coffee stirrer to pen spring coils, and massive shrinkage. But I'm hoping itl hang more and be big like yours when it grows out. It's also refreshing to

  • @trizzytrix see that Im not the only one to take this stance with my hair. Im going to look at more of your videos and compare our hairtypes and what not cause its kind of hard to see if its the same since yours is so long while mine is necklength when stretched but still a TWA when not stretched. And my coils are lovely as well. Sorry, I'm rambling. But I just want to say thanks for having this channel and reassuring me. I'm 18 now, so when I'm 21, I'd definitely be the BAA talk of the town :)

  • Just wanted to say that you're the 1st person I've come across on youtube, that does a REAL wash & go. It's what I used to do when I 1st went natural in '91, just because I decided to stop relaxing & cut my hair off. I literally had a twa & conditioned in the shower daily & LOVED the ease & as my hair grew out, I started noticing the coils! Over the years, I've gone back/forth w/ texturizing {it's still a relaxer which KILLS your hair!} now 100% going back 2 a wash & go. Thanks for inspiring! :D

  • I understand you to say that you always fingercomb...I'm going to try that. Do you do wash and gos daily? I don't really see how to do that in the cold weathjer and not get sick...do you actually soak your head in the shower daily?

I am also going to try the baking soda clarification.

Are you saying your hair breaks due to twist outs and knot outs or it just shrinks more?...

  • @Amaspiritartist3 Hi there. Just thought I'd give my 2 cents :) I used to/and again am starting a daily wash and go - fully wetting my head every morning. I did it for many years, all through the winter - and I live in Toronto Canada. You don't get sick from that. And, you're also not leaving the house, with your head dripping wet, in any case :D

  • I have enjoyed all 3 of your afrocare 101 vids. I have learned something from each video and will put into my hair regimen. Your hair is huge!!!! and I love it!! :) Thank you :)

  • hi! i enjoyed these 3 videos. i think i understood everything you were saying and it's all timely because i'm going to try the wet-n-condition daily method once again. i could so relate to your facial expression when you undid your twists and weren't happy with the result. my question is, did you say you just leave a leave-in and do not use gel? gels have not been my friend. they cause my hair to mat up but it seems everyone stresses how important gels are for wet-n-gos. please help!

  • you are such an inspiration !! i love, love, love your hair !!!

  • i love your hair, cynthiarf! i'm hoping that mine will get big like that. i'm seven months natural now and i transitioned for five. so, i haven't been natural long and i have a ways to go,still trying to get the hang of things.btw, is that your natural hair color?

  • hi there, love your videos! I'm just about to have a hugggee trim of my natural hair and start caring for it properly :) but please can you just clarify your point that you made in relation to wearing twistouts regularly. are you saying that you noticed your hair shrunk much more as a relult of the twistouts, or much less? and also, what is wrong with either in terms of it affecting your hair growth and appearance? hope my question makes sense, but pls anyone who knows the answer, pls reply :) x

  • @Yetunde87 hi, thanks and yes totally made sense (workg on an answer vid now) but yes doing twists regularly made mycoils shrink 50% more than usual as seen in that split screen pic. coils will shrink but not that much normally. it took about 2-3wks of wngs to reverse 3wks of twists.

as far as growth/appear i found the longer i stayed away from conditiong (water), the frizzier i was, and can only guess stunts growth based on others who twist more often than not. yrs1-2 i cowashd a min 3wks/mon.

  • @cynthiarf Thank you for the prompt reply. That really cleared that up for me. cutting off almost 6inches of my hair this weekend and going to follow your tips coz u have obviously got it locked. Thanx again :)

  • I also agree with the curl typing thing. I used to think I had 4c-z hair. But actually as it's gotten longer and healthier it coils up. Recently, since I've been swimming alot, I've been doing wash and gos. I stopped using tools to detangle. My coil pattern is now more apparent than it's ever been.

  • My hair is the same way. Twistouts just DON'T work for me. Crazy because most people with type 4 hair don't like wash and gos. But I MUCH prefer wash and gos to twistouts. They always look crazy. And it's a waste of time to spend twisting and end up looking a mess.

  • What about those of us with excessive shrinkage? I used to love wash and gos when my hair was shorter. Now it's below my shoulders in a stretched out state. So I've been wearing twistouts on slightly blowdried hair. Even twistouts on wet hair shrink at least 90%. When I let it air dry I have a 2 inch TWA. Don't get me wrong it's super defined and gorgeous but I would love the ease of a wash and go without the excessive shrinkage. Any suggestions?

  • @bibliophreak if i answd this already forgive me :) what i learned was the twisting/brading was causing my wngs to shrink 50% MORE over the normal 50%+ shrinkage. i showd a split screen pic (either this vid or part2) after doing twistouts for 3wks straight and after wngs for 3wks. my hair was ur lenght at the time and the before pic is a mini-afro too! im bbs and it still shrinks to my shoulders - go figure - so i roll with it :) gel helps give me more hang tho

  • 11:35 I could watch that all day. lol

  • @ 4:50 IM DYING LAUGHING! Girl you are CRAZY!!!! As ALWAYS I love your Videos. Your videos have always been VERY helpful to MyHair. MyHair appreciates you. LOL

    C

  • I love this series and I want to know EVERY SINGLE thing you do to it!

  • I revisited this method after noticing minimal growth after being natural for almost 2 years. Cynthia is right... minimal styling tools during the detangling process (although I still need my denman to remove any left behind strays), finger combing, conditioning, and a good leave in really has improved my coils and the overall appearance of my hair. I have a strong feeling if I keep this up, I may actually notice and achieve growth!!!

  • So are you saying it is better to put the leave-in conditioner in your hair b4 you wrap your hair on your way out of the shower? Wouldnt the tshirt/towel soak up some of the conditioner you just put in your hair? Also do you feel it is not necessary to put oils in your hair or on scalp? Not sure if you mentioned this in another video. Thx.

  • love your hair!

  • @cynthia-did you actually have to train your hair to go forward or is that just the way your hair grows? Mine only wants to go back (or straight up lol) and that's not the look I'm going for.

  • @dointherealme - same here. ugh!

  • OK, I tried this today and while I like the idea of conditioning and rinsing my hair every day (especially in this humidity!), my hair was more shrunken than I was comfortable with. I normally shower at night, and I just don't think I'd have time every morning to wash it and get it looking like anything I'd like. Frankly, I think the finger combing (which is what I have been doing for a year now, thanks to you!) is enough to get the coils popping, and they have been!

  • This series was so informative! Thank u thank u thank u!!!

  • I have a question. I think my hair is getting thinner. I just started with the finger combing since seeing your series. Will fingercombing help my thickness. I really believe I lost a lot of hair in my shower comb.

  • @bajestar24 maybe esp if it was due to combing. to this day i have shorter coils in multiple places that is more noticeable now that its really grown out and im sure its hair that was broken during my combing/brushing phase

  • @cynthiarf thanks for the responce. I really feel like it the combing along with some other things. I have been in denial. Thanks again for this series!

  • Quick question, do you still have the need to use any protein treatments like the Cantu Shea you used to use? Thank you.

  • amazing...thinking of rethinking my regimen

  • i've asked myself this question many times before...what makes our coily hair so different from everyone else's? why do we have to pack our hair with products? your video's are the only one's that answer my questions. i see now that i've been trying to get a certain look...different from what the Lord blessed me with.

  • (cont.) So-called "4c" hair is REAL. There's a patch on top of my head that has no pattern wet or dry...but I still appreciate it like I appreciate all my strands. This series is called "AfroCare" yet for some people that "frizz ball" you describe so disparagingly IS their Afro. EVERY woman should be able to appreciate their texture even if it doesn't have a coil pattern. They're -- WE'RE -- discouraged enough from being natural as it is!

Other than that, like I said, this was great. Thanks.

  • @LBellatrix let me say im the type that will be the first to admit if im wrong and hope its known that i wud NEVER say "frizz ball" as a diss - but again im not sure if this 4c thing is true. i too have areas, esp the back, thats not patterned but let me tell u what happend the day i tried the TT...

  • @cynthiarf ...that day was the FIRST time the back felt COMPLETELY separated into little coils. now why WHY?!? did i use that damn thing? now its back to 'normal' - all this to say i think it takes many moons of "fingercombing" to know for sure. unless someone out there can say theyve had 4c hair for yrs and have not used tools at all and still no coils, i will reserve my retraction :) i happen to think 4c-z is teeny tiny coils thats very sensitive to manipulation, NOT a natural frizz ball

  • @cynthiarf Interesting...the same thing happened to me (except in that one spot I mentioned). I admit I'm confused about the category of "4c" but I've seen with my own eyes hair that doesn't form any kind of UNIFORM (maybe that's the word?) coil wet or dry. If this is the definition of "4c"...and someone with predominantly 4c hair tries your methods and starts seeing coils, you might just have a point. But yeah...it's confusing. :\ Now I wonder if "someone out there" will speak up...

  • (cont.) I used the TT several times that week; I won't do that again. I do think it works wonderfully well as an occasional detangling too though.

    3) Re knots, esp. SSKs: Completely agree. If they aren't bothering you, don't bother them.

Sadly I take issue with your last pt in this video, which veers into "good/bad hair" territory IMO. I have said here and elsewhere that your methods have resulted in my finding coils I never knew I had BUT that's just not going to be the case for everyone.

  • Great series, Cynthia! I agree with most of it.

    1) Glycerin vs. cones: We share the same hair texture but mine does much better with cones than with glycerin. Suave Tropical Coconut doesn't have cones in it but several of the Herbal Essences ones do, including my long-time favorite Hello Hydration (which you've said doesn't work for you).

    2) Literally THIS MONTH I wanted to see more length and so I brushed out my coils (with the TT) trying for a chunky 'fro. My hair is still recovering!

  • I have did this once and so far I love it. I am getting stretched hair without the twist and my hair is so soft. detangle was a breeze, those balls slipped right out. I will keep you posted but I am gonna to try this for a couple of months especially since its summer. My hair is really responding well to water and actually i forgot to even put a leave-in in - when i was getting ready to tye it up for the night my hair is so soft.

  • ****continued: i didint really care because i like the "fuzzball" look. so if every1 who are believed to not have a curl pattern followed your method to a T, would they regain some sort of curl pattern? Would this method work for every1?

i have short hair btw if that helps lol.

    love your hair btw xD.

  • Hi i have a question about the last statement on your video...the part where you said that you could appreciate the health of hair when its in coils then when it's a "frizzball" (just lightly paraphrasing xD) .Do you believe that every hairtype has some sort of a curl pattern, that just needs to be "unleashed", especially 4b because i know that many ppl could be 4b, but not have the same texture as you or another person with coils, because i dont think i have a curk/coil pattern, and i din care

  • I love how thick your hair is. I know my hair has lost thickness from detangling. I know laziness prevents me from fingercombing, but short cuts just gets me tons of hair in the garbage. Oh can you post pictures. I think you see so much more texture in pics.

  • Great series.

Thanks for re-sharing what works for u.

  • Cynthia

I want to do ur daily water challenge. So if use on cond to cowash i should use same condn to leave-n?

  • @po3ticphlonaz not necessarily. safest best is to use condrs specifically made for leav-n. i have in the past left deep condrs in (but now it was just a fraction of what i used as a cowash - like a quarter dollop for whole head) but have also messed up trying with others (hello hydration was a big NO NO). whatever u choose (lv-n condr or oils or moisturizer or gels), choose one, wrap up a few min, shake out, style/accessorize. keep it simple

  • ⇜Thnx Cynthiarf↭

    Gr8 series

  • I shed like a dog and fingers don't get all the shed hair out. I still have to use a wide tooth comb (I coat the hair with conditioner spritz to create slip). I sadly had to retire my Tangle Teezer (I think I got some splits and trimmed 1/2 inch). Love this vid :)

  • Very informative and a lot of useful info! Would you consider doing one more video and epitomize all your AfroCare 101 steps into one video....pretty please:)??? Thanks so much for sharing!

  • your hair is lovely hun...the color is lovely, is it died on the ends or is it natural?? if it is colored then what brand of dye did you use?....^_^

  • Wow your hair is absolutely Gorgeous, and you are very pretty.

  • Great Series Girl! Definitely learned some new tricks.

  • Awww Daaannnnng! Girl you are not alone..I bought that dang Tangle Teaser too. I 100% finger comb my hair when detangling as welll, but I saw this new gadget and had to have it. It detangled but it was awkward to hold and tired out my hand. I ended up giving it to one of my cousins.

  • Thanks for doing this series of videos!

  • My tangle teezer is under some stuff somewhere, I think it caused damage and set me back a bit.

  • I've never seen you Tangle Teaser Upload, but I felt the same way. I feel that it works best when you are doing braids, twists, flat twist type of styles because it does separate the hair.Or after you take out those styles and AFTER you use your figers to detangle, and you feel like you need a little more help to get out the shed hair. I highly suggest it for mothers with those "Tender-headed" babies. LOL I'm tender-headed, and I can tell a difference when I twist my hair versus using a comb

  • I like this series, Cynthia.

  • love your videos. thanks.

  • thanks for posting these vids. They are very helpful. BTW I used the tangle teaser for about a month and it caused split ends. I lost over an inch of hair :-( I went back to detangling my hair with my fingers.

  • excellent series, you have mastered your hair!! i love it, it's super healthy! i would urge you to be careful with the tangle teezer, i loved it for nearly 3 months, until i saw what it did to my hair, and my hair is super easy to detangle (2 minutes in the shower!).

  • Thank you so much, I've started these methods already and was glad to have reference points for some questions I had. Now I can release some of you older vids from my rotation :o) as these three parts cover all. Thanks again.

  • how often do you wash or cowash your hair? i'm a bit confused about that

  • @gibel13 wash 3-4x a month...thats every 7-10 days and cowash everyday im not doing a twistout or something...which is rare these days

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to share your hair care techniques. I agree with everyone, your videos are AWESOME!!!!! :)

  • You have beautiful hair, and thank you for sharing what you found to be helpful in growing it. I'm slowly doing the techniques you talk about :)

  • I don't know if anyone has ever asked you or if it's in one of your videos that I haven't watched yet but what do you do with your hair before bed? Usually I just sleep on mine cause I'm unsure if it'd be necessary to put product in if I'm just going to get up the next day and co-wash and apply the same product in it. So yeah...

  • @FreeHugsHugger thats coming in my next vid tho im sure ive stated it in the past...but as u do i just go to bed bc like u cowashing the next day takes care of all concerns. and no additional product needed or required

  • you have covered everything. THANKS

  • This couldn't have come at a better time! I watched all three videos at once and I already love my hair again. I haven't even touched it! I comb my hair so much, yet I complain about my lack of corl pattern. I don't know if I'm 4b, 4c, 9L or what but your tips are awesome and I have to try them for my hair. You're not trying to up-sell a product but give your honest opinion. Love it!

  • As always, LOVE it!!!

  • Thank you for putting all of this info in one set. It was like a refresher course. My question is: what do you use to lighten your hair and how do you use it?

  • @arisu23c u r so welcome! it was due time as i too had forgotten the full contents of my past vids and ive updated how i do things a bit as well...so it was good for me too :) as for my hair color its mine. as my hair grows longer it always gets browner. ive never used color. i wanted blonde tips at one point but chickened out so tried spritzing with hydrogen peroxide about a yr ago (5 days total) and chickened out again...LOL...in my 4mon progress vid u can see my permed 'red' hair

  • You're awesome! Thanks for the videos! :)

  • You're awesome! Thanks for the video! :)

  • Best video ever!

  • Very thorough and I learned something new: 11:18. I didn’t know that combing/brushing causes the coils to shrink up like that. I knew it made our texture look like “cotton” but I didn’t know it also affected the length of the strands so dramatically. I have fine hair so that information will help me when I’m ready to wear my hair out in wash ‘n go’s.

    Thanks for the series ♥

  • Have you ever had problems with your edges? This is a great series of videos. I love that though I've been natural a few years I still learn something new every week. I'm going to try clarifying with baking soda.

  • nice video. love watching your progress.
