Interesting to me anyway how he could seem so upbeat yet was apparently suicidal around the time this video was made. I tend to think his death was inevitable and the game made him stay even longer. Those close to him said they were worried when he was reassigned by Angelos in 2007.
You didn't have to blow your brains out. When people go themselves they hurt the love ones even more by doing stupid shit like that. I mean I know life is bad, but you don't go kill yourself. There's worse out in the world and killing yourself isn't the way to go.
@GeorgeCarlinIsInHell. I don't know if you are being real or sarcastic but the way Cal responded to Mike's death reminded of a former alumni that graduated the same year I did. I saw the person only twice so when somebody asked about him. I said, Oh, yeah, he was nice.
I think there were a lot of factors that led to him to take his life.I've talked to him a few times about the O's and he always seemed like a sensitive person when we talked. He was always so friendly to me though. It must have really hurt him to not have his executive postion not renewed.I'm sure he really really wanted to turn the Orioles around and wasn't able to do that once he was let go of that job.And it wasn't his fault that they did so poorly at all.He had a real passion for the Orioles.
I had really noticed that Flanny seemed depressed all of the time lately, seeing him on MASN. He looked so worn out. I ran into someone yesterday before either of us knew how he died and I told him he looked so sad lately and he said he thought that too. I heard on the news today that he's had financial trouble. Depression is a horrible thing. He wasn't thinking rationally. Mental illness will do that to a person. He probably kept getting worse and worse. My heart goes out to himand his family.
Very sad story. Great guy and first-rate pitcher. Terrible thing to feel he felt that responsible for the club's demise when the biggest fault is clearly the owner.
@jfury76 True. It's very sad to think that would be the reason for his suicide. I just hope that they find out that it WASN'T a suicide...some accident, something. Him feeling like he's responsible would be not only sad, but so wrong. Flanny did nothing but help this organization, and even as someone who never got to see him play...I grew up with the history of him and his squad setting the bar. Especially since they won the World Series two years before I was born.
@jfury76 Yeah its horrible to imagine that's the reason why he did it. If anyone should be found dead it should be Angelos. Sorry if that sounds terrible but that's just how i feel. A guy who cared so much about a organization feels responsible for something he didn't even cause yet the lazy son of Bitch who owns the team seems to give less than two shits whether or not the team wins. RIP
@MrJacksonvs lmao at the comments about Angelos....i shudder to think he killed himself because of the Orioles...if the Orioles made him feel that depressed why not just retire to your millions and enjoy your family....he was a multi-millionaire who had a family and children...its not like he was broke, or had a messed up life....he kinda had everything a man could want matierialisticly speaking but im sad to hear this news SMH... very disturbing
@DirtyMoney410 Yeah supposedly they just heard from his wife and she said he was worried about his financial problems which is weird considering the amount of money he made over the course of his career whether it be as a player, commentator, or GM. Who knows maybe he was gambling and lost a large amount of money. Oh well, may he rest in peace and for the love of God Peter Angelos sell the team to someone who's gonna actually take care of this franchise.
I just found out about his death, RIP. I never saw him broadcast I only remember him as a pitcher when I was a kid so I don't know his mannerisms. He seems uncomfortable and fidgety here like he's either medicated or just bothered mentally. I could be completely wrong again I only know him from 30 years ago on a pitcher's mound and never heard him speak or react in a social setting. But sad to hear he passed too soon.
That was a great look at Flanagan. Who knew how important that little video could be. Well done and now a great tribute to a great man. Thanks for posting! Flanny was a real joy in my life, on and off the field. Great in the booth. RIP Mike Flanagan.
