@berrycccc I was yet a scoolboy when the war broke out, and it were the Canadian forces who liberated us in the night of 31 oct./1 nov '44.
But... those veterans are mistaking thmselves (8:04-8:29 min.): 1) many of this women were yet married with a German BEFORE the war. 2) a lot of these men & women were FALSELY accused: If a person had quarrel with his neighbour, or...if a woman once had refused to sleep with somebody, he just had to say that those person was a ex-nazifriend.
@berrycccc Of course, there were a lot of nazifriends too, but remember that the Netherlands have a large common frontier, so...there were yet "love-stories" in the interbellum. These armed civilians were ONLY the "resistants of the last days"... a true resistant would NOT commit such a stupidities. (after the war, they tried to let those morons to be trialed, but the hate against the Gemans was still so deep that they were
They don't make them like that anymore. I'm a member of the CF now, and I don't know if I could do what these brave men did. Thank you, we will remember.
I watched this with tears streaming down my eyes. My Uncles, cousins and late fatherinlaw were all in Holland when it was liberated and to see this video brought me closer to them. May they rest in peace in never be forgotten. THANK YOU! for all you did and God rest your souls. To the Dutch people..we thank you for your remembrance of our soldiers, the wonderful care you take of the cemeteries that hold our loved ones and most of all, thank you Holland for not forgetting them! Love from Canada
My grandparents were liberated by the Canadians in Holland and moved to Canada later after the war ended. I was born in Ontario and can't express the love I have for Canada and the Netherlands.
Thank you so much. And thank you for talking about it. The sacrifice is not just in physical health or life, its in mental health. I cannot even begin to imagine.
thank you very much for this video wonderfull I was in the canadian navy on air craft carrier called hms puncher in 1944 and was in Holland for the liberation and cannot forget the reception we received thank very much. I have bee trying to have a windmill instaled in ottawa ont for 2 years to honour the canadian veterans and the dutch people.
Have personally played for and met most of these gents. There is no amount of thanks that is enough for these men and more importantly, those who sacrificed all for a safer and better world. We WILL remember them.
Every War Veterans from every country, even Germans and Japs need to get respect. Germans were normal people fighting for the country just like every other soldiers, only they were lead by Nazis. They just did what they were told to do.
As a Canadian, i'am proud of being one, and proud of my country and those fellow vets what they did and sacrificed their lives to free Holland.
I'am glad that Canada is friend with Holland and many other countries.
@XDlosDominicans I disagree. Germans had a choice. Many Germans didn't support the Nazis while others openly opposed them. Marlene Dietrich is a heroine for standing up early on and vocally and supporting the Free World against he Nazi barbary.
So true. Remembering the sacrifice of the men and women in uniform is a duty we all have. Look around, all that you have, all that you love, is here thanks to our armed forces.
"It doesn't come free... we've given up an awful lot, and they're out there... under the stones."
Both my Grandfather and his brother served in the 23rd Field Regiment RCA and remember the hardship that the people of Holland went through during the winter of 45. Canada and Holland will always share a special bond.
