Good video. Lots more to learn to do it right and safely, but this is a good start. The reason people react differently is genetic. There is a certain gene that is not working in 20% of the population that causes them (me) to not clear biotoxins from the body. A blood test is available. It's a HLA DRB DQB Disease Association and it will show you how sensitive you are. Check out Dr Ritchie Shoemaker's work online. He's a leader in treating biotoxin exposure has the science to back it up.
@dethride Thanks for the comment and explanation of mold exposure.
I posted this video to help people understand the reality of the situation and the potential risks of dealing with it. In this weak economy, not everyone is going to have thousands of dollars to hire a professional mold remediation company.
So I thought I could share the basics of safety and removal.

Thanks for this video. For those homeowner do-it-yourselfers like me, wear the body suit, respirator, and goggles as he pleads. I know first-hand what happens when you get this mold on or in you -- I was repairing a main line water pipe in a very tight corner of a crawl space where I could see and smell mold. Well I'm quite certain that the severe pneumonia that put me out for two weeks was a direct result of this exposure. I will heed his precautions from now on.
Despite the health issue, at least you're ADDRESSING it. I'd still be trying to read fanfiction without seeing the words "f***ing complex is trying to charge me for mold leaking through the f***ing walls and refuses to make subleasing arrangements until the mold removal begins--yes, f*** them, begins--and refuse to have me pay only for the usable portion of the rooms which I would be remaining in were I suicidal." They never do write realistic stories in that sense, do they...
i'm in midst hell - mold ascended sheet rock basement ceiling to upstairs. Behind sheet rock on front/south wall of house (shrouded by maples). In basement cabinets, sheetrock walls, spare fridge.
Tools:
(1) Lysol Roller Mop Refill (cut 2" off each side w/Fixwell knife & attached it to 2-ft stick. The cut-offs were handy for cleaning as well.)
(2) cheap exfoliating glove (under which is double-layer of latex gloves)
(3) rough-woven plaid cotton dish cloth knotted around dish brush
I have been in the business since 1989. I am really happy this worked out for you because the odd were heavily stacked against you. Please... Please. NOBODY should be encouraged to expose yourself to any mold, mildew or active bacteria growing inside your home. Many types of mold will fairly quickly attack your nervous system. If your not a pro... walk away.
@assman778 i contracted black and white mould from my gym - its not this bad as ive just done a renovation.. its the one that eats through metal - do u know what type that is.. ?
Good advice: in cold times like winter, move furniture like bookshelves, cabinets, refrigerators etc. 5-10cm in from the walls to avoid moisture traps behind them.
@Kenzofeis right with eversharp, as i've discovered to my shock. I'm still in midst of the endless hell of cleaning from mold everywhere in the house. I've learned that it makes sense to locate furniture away from outer walls of house. In my case, the south wall proved bad because of huge maple trees too close to the house, undermining foundation & blocking sun. Mold's repelled by DRY wood, contact paper, paint. Mold likes SMOOTH wood. Even plastic walls inside spare frig (unplugged
@HowToHomeInsulation Not everyone will have a negative reaction to mold. Some people react only to certain molds. @assman778 is actually correct on the negative air comment. To do the work properly, you should have negative air or some kind of air scrubber on an open loop running while performing your work. You should also be using a HEPA vacuum to suck up any dirt/dust from removing the mold that would have fallen (a ShopVac would just throw the mold spores back into the air)
my shed floor was rotting and consumed by some really rhizomorphic white and black molds... i took out the wood, but I want to make sure the dirt/wood below is sterilized before I put new wood in. Any suggestions on how to do this? I've been spraying it with bleach.
I used a product called Concrobium Mold Control. It works a little better than bleach because it creates a long lasting coating that crushes the micro-organisms. It was about $9 at Lowes. Well worth the money for a little piece of mind.
@legalyzefreed0m Stop the moisture wicking up the wood..put down plastic or something before you put the new wood or you'll have the same condition...make sure water is draining away from the shed as well.

@assman778 Strangely enough I did not get sick or have any problems.
According to the EPA, jobs this size are manageable with the right precautions. I followed their advice and came out fine on the other side.

@HowToHomeInsulation Hi, is Concrobium better than vinegar, and does it have a strong odor? I have MCS.
