Uhhh...how exactly does distortion work?

distortion comes from either amps/pedals/sound modifiers. it changes how a pitch may sound making it more 'rumble' like. it just has something to do with frequencies.

when something's turned up too loud for itself to handle, it distorts. an amp turns this in our favor by having two volume controls. one will increase the volume so much that the frequency distorts, we nickname this the "gain control or distortion. the other control (usually master volume) will control the overall volume that comes out of the amp... get how it works now? so the first control makes it too loud to handle, the second control adjusts the volume of that mess... sorry hard to explain

in other words, one control makes a mess, the other control determines how loud you want that mess to be. so while the first control has made it too loud, it's ok cos the second control keeps it at a pleasant volume. so you can still have your distortion, while at the same time, controlling how loud it is, or isn't.

it doesnt come from finger movement, it comes from electronics. plug any instrument into an amplifier, and turn the distortion on with that amplifier.
