I'm not much of a musician but doggone, folks, she is singing this in two sharps: DO NOT PLAY THIS AS WRITTEN or you'll think your instrument is out of whack. But it is still a wonderful post!
Hi, Would you mind telling me what book this score is from? I have the "40 Songs" ed. by Sergius Kagen and it is not in there. Any help would be appreciated!
My favourite version n here, and she sings in original key - C minor baroque pitch, tempo perfect etc etc, it really does feel to me that she's telling us the poetry for the first time, Katherine would bve proud I'm sure! 1:51 - 2:13 is just perfect.
i love this song. i was bored between classes (i'm a voice perf. major) and went to our music library and found a book of purcell songs (love him) so i read through, and fell upon this one, and fell in love. thank you so much for sharing this beautiful recording, as soon as lessons start up, i'm going to ask my voice teacher if i can hopefully sing this song at some point during my study here. once again, thank you, actually listening to someone sing it (instead of in my head) helped so much:)
She's not singing in Bminor...simply, the pitch is A=415 HZ (lower than 700/800es music)...so, she'is singing in C minor with different pitch..and B-flat minor would be a really impossible key for original struments like these...
@gand84 hey, well pointed out. I was a bit surprised at the "some of you guys who claim to have perfect pitch"... Some people just do and others usually find it pretty helpful :s Your post is very helpful, so thanks !
@gand84 Yes, I also think that is the point, because at first I thought it was sang in h - minor, but the baroque pitch makes c - minor sound like h - minor, making it softer for ears :)
I wanted to let you know my middle school students watch your videos in class as an element in developing their sight reading skills, and they love this song. It's one of their favorites!
very interresting song that i listen often, because i feel some time alone and this song is warming my soul passionnately.the beautiful voice of susan gritton help me to regain some energy.i like also the voice of andrea scholl exceptionnaly because i'm not a fanatique of countertenor but his voice is marvelous.
the thing with the keys might be because back then, during that period, the notes were tuned a semitone lower than it is today.... the publisher might have been trying to make it sound as close to the original as possible but the singer still singing in the key that it was written down in.....?
i'm new to youtube ... still exploring, i absolutely love the MUSIC and SCORE displayed at the same time ... i can play along with an instrument ... tunning is a challenge ... if "A" not 440Hz
Hello, I'm just discovering your posts and I want to thank you for doing it so well ! I really like to follow the score and your comments are complete and very interesting.
Wow. I remember this song.. But, as with everything else - I had forgotten it. Beautiful rendition. Thanks for - hmm. I don't remember sending a video response. :)
thank you for sharing so many renditions of this. I like O SOLITUDE very much. my
favourite is Alfred Deller's, and yours? maybe Deller's is the warmest one, the most spiritual, so deeply sentimental, for my taste (of course --- and I love his voice!). I dind't know Susan Gritton, thank you!, and thank you for the information you add.
My pleasure.. I like Deller's the most perhaps for the same reasons as yours, although I cannot dismiss Lesne's delicate singing. So he becomes my second favorite. Of course I love Bowmans and Gritton's a lot, too. Gritton is really touching in fact. They all have a different kind of beauty to appreciate to me.
Best to my knowledge, no, he didn't. I'd love to hear him sing this, though. Only Purcell aria I know that he sung is the live performance of "Fairest Isle" at the BBC Last Night at the Proms..

To me listening to Purcell in solitude is one of the sweetest possible choices.

I like many renditions that you let us hear (of "O Solitude"), and this one too.
Do you have one by Sylvia McNair?
legato699 4 years ago
I don't have that one, did she record it? I was planning to upload another Purcell song by McNair soon. I'll check and see if I can find it, though..
civileso 4 years ago
Yes, I am pretty sure she did. That would be her kind of thing (she did "Music for a While")
Thanks for your efforts
legato699 4 years ago
Yes, it's in her "The Echoing Air" album (Philips, reissued by ArkivMusic). I've only heard a one-minute sample. Sounds beautiful, but very fast.
