With the fuel prices going the way they are, diesels are going to become more popular in the states soon. BMW is most impressive - the new 520 diesel in europe gets 58mpg alongside 184hp and 8 sec 0-60 time. phenomenal for such a big car.
Don't these people know the Mythbusters are funnier off script! I don't mind the mild scripting for the blueprints and wrapups, but this is just a car commercial. That's okay, I guess, but then it shouldn't be on Discovery's account. Don't sell out, people! The show doesn't need any help!
No, but quite near, it's an Opel Corsa B with a Izuso X17D (4EE1) engine, specs say:
44 mpg or 5.3L/100Km combined, i can do quite better since the car is the cargo version (quite lighter when not loaded), the worst i've done was 5.5L/100Km (with the 4 glowplugs not quite working)
The best was 4.0L/100Km (very tiring to drive that way) ... most of the time i get 4.3~4.5L/100Km
Spec also say fuel tank has 46L, but i know it takes almost 50L
I wonder if the new 1.2 TDI VW engine will be a success
Free energy has been here all along ,But the big oil corporations don't want that technology revealed,Get a motor that needs no gas or electric input at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Free yourself!
So...TopGear went from Switzerland to Blackpool in the UK on one tank in a VW Polo, Subaru and a Jag. And this is a feckin ad for VW, Americans are only interested in Range in Europe we care also about CO2 emissions and that diesel Passat is distrusting. 128g/km of CO2.
@picassso4you, my car (not a VW) has a 50L tank (a little less than that actually) and does 1200Km as well :] .... but is not as big nor heavy as a Passat... it's from 1995 ... and has an 1.7L diesel engine...
VW diesels are quite good indeed, but not the only ones ;]
Keeping any show running, especially one with the upkeep costs of MythBusters takes CASH and unless whiny-ass consumers like you want to start handing these guys a paycheck every week, stop bitching.
BFD! 600 miles! my suburban goes 780 miles on a tank if thats how you want to look at it, but I can also bring 7 friends and their luggage in comfort.
and you pollute like hell with your ugly Suburban. You didn't get the point do you? They say the Jetta reach more than 40 mpg. What do you get with your truck?
as soon as you put four people and their luggage in the jetta your millage will drop to say 36 mpg, I on the other hand can haul the fore mentioned eight passengers and luggage at 19.5 mpg or the equivalent of 39 mpg per four passengers, with leg room for my 6'5' son in ANY seat. everyone thinks gross polluter but the suburban is quite practical in my case, even when towing w/passengers I get 18 mpg, not bad at 10000 lbs!
In this commercial they are all excited the jetta goes over 600 miles on a tank!, the jettas diesel is rated at 41 mpg, with a 14.5 gallon tank that is 594 miles, yes I realize the suburban has a larger tank, my point is all these car ads are bragging about so many miles per tank but dont go on and say around town mileage numbers, when are you really going to drive on highway? your not, your going to work, or the store or whatever, so the ads should talk about around town mileage per tank.
It maybe true that many people in large cities don't drive the highway much, some of those people may almost never leave the city. Remember though while there are some very big cities; most in America are somewhat more rural and suburban where the highway conects outlying towns to a central metro. I live in a city of about 250-300k with up to around a million with the outlying communities. I and almost everyon I know at the hospital where I work take the highway everyday.
I agree with what you are saying but I think the EPA considers that combination city / hwy driving which will have a lower overall total, highway mileage is based on a constant highway speed with engine at operating temperature.again I wasn't knocking the mileage at all but ads are bragging 600 miles on a tank based on hwy driving, an uninformed buyer might say "hey that's great!" buy the car then never get that distance per fill up, I know there are disclaimers but I feel its false advertising
40mpg? That's crap. My Citroen HDI Estate gets 48 and it's enormous! Cars in the UK now get 60 and somtimes even 70mpg. Who are they kidding with this crap? My Land Rover Freelander gets 40.

It isn't per tank, it's per gallon. Jetta's probably have a 12-14 gallon tank and your suburban has at least double that. So yes, PBFD.
