The sauerkraut that I had when I was stationed in Germany was the absolute worst that I have ever tasted. I love sauerkraut especially raw, but what I was served in Germany was very bland and way over cooked. What is the point?
Anyone know where i can buy decent saurkraut? And restaurant chains that would expand throughout us with reliable kraut, or store brands? better off making on my own? All the kraut ive tried kinda sucked.
@Zellig Look in the refrigerator section of your grocery store it will be in a plastic bag, try it raw, straight out of the bag like a salad or pickle, it should have a very slight crunch to it. There are 2 brands here in MN. both about the same the only difference is price. Frank"s is a little higher priced than the other and I can't remember the name right now. Try the raw sauerkraut and if you like that, then make your own if not, it just isn't for you. Some people just don't like it.
the interviewer sound super gay. and the intro is anoying. i like the people he interviews but i hate him and the intro. they should change the interview and the intro or im not sure if im gonna keep watching.
@PrincessLeia100 I read i a cultural book about europe that sauerkraut was Polish invinted, I cant believe everyhting i read but ive remebered that fact ever since
Even the Russians and all eastern European countries eat sauerkraut, and every region of all those countries has it's own special sauerkraut recipe, but it could easily be true that the Poles invented it.
I'm German, and on my last visit to friends in Poland, they prepared the most delicious sauerkraut I've ever eaten in my life.
@1276epr eat yer burgers and leave us alone, and stick a cucumber into your anglophile ass.. mc donalds is the most cheap and insulting food on this planet. and our kraut is royal
@simantov666 read my comment more carefully before you crap on me. I merely asked if Germans regarded word "Kraut" as derogatory. The commentator refers to Germans as "Krauts". Whether you guys enjoy sauerkraut, bathe in it, or give it away is no business of mine.
Great stuff! I found part of a recipe book my ancestor had.It is hand written in German and is from between 1819-1884 (from her birth/death dates} It has recipes for: sauerkraut, blood sausage, venison w/juniper berries, cinnamon stars (cookies) dandelion wine, and fish soup.I've only made the cookies which are fantastic. The blood sausage reads like: hang pig by back legs from tree.Place barrell beneath it and cut throat.Let blood completely drain.Stir blood every 1/2 hour, remove clots....
Sauerkraut is just another food Germany has contributed to the World's pantry. Pure German, here - love kraut, and I make my grandmother's Swabian recipe with apples and white wine....
ill snack on that shit strait from the jar while im grillin up some Bratwurzt.
i think some people think is gross its name...
"sour Krout"
its not really sour, its just like a pickle, and pickles are really good too :)
I like to put it on sandwiches and stuff.
Whats also good if you cut up some apples, cut up some bratwurzt and stir some sauerkraut into a frying pan and cook it all up. Anyone will love that dish.
well, i´m 22, i eat tons of kraut, it´s cheap and healthy and if you know how to cook it, it´s also quite tasty...but it´s definetly not only german, i guess half of europe eats this and russians, too.
Well im american but im nearly full blood german. I love kraut myself it goes great on lots of food such as sausage and hotdogs. In fact its the only way I will even eat a hotdog is if I have kraut for it. I would have demolished that plate of kraut if offered to me. I doubt it has anything to do with my german heritage though. I just like it.
Ja, I was surprised when we had some German relatives visit us in the US. They don't eat traditional German food at all today! They eat more like Americans: Asian food, Italian food, health food. What is going on over there? I bin ein americaner, aber it habe Kraut gerne!
The Stereotype of the Krauts is by far older than the WW2, infact it's a relict of the times before the tinned goods. The fermentation process of the Kraut doesn't only make it an easily storable good, it also restores tremendous amounts of Vitamin C in it. So for a long time traditional "Sauerkraut" was THE antiscorbutic agent. In England however the industrial revolution took place 50 years earlier, so while english sailors had canned goods, the germans still relied on their Kraut.
Tastes good....when combined with other foods. All northern Europeans have a variation on the stuff....it's cheap, stores well and is nutritious. That it happens to taste really good with beer and pork products or cooked into casseroles is just a bonus. If the French consume more it's proof that it's good.

Hengstenberg Sauerkraut i think is easy to gain for you but in germany that depends on your grocery store ^^
My mother fried one onion and smoked ham (sliced in little cubes).
You give the whole in a pot with the Kraut and grate one raw potato in it and cook the whole 15 mins with meat broth.

Gerusapan 4 years ago 4
The poor German families in past could fabricate it for themselves, which means it was cheap, they didn't have to buy it.
For many Germans it was the only affordable vitamin source during the entire winter.
So the Germans ate it maybe three times a week, but not because they liked it, they had no other choice.
That's the story.
