i am setting up my AMD-65 with an ultimak tube. other than the batterys in my dremel dying it is a very simple process and a great addition to the rifle. some minor grinding is required for the steal hand gaurd. i wish i was videoing the process but its a little after the fact.
I have the ultimak on a mak90 and it works great. Don't worry about heat build up, the Ultimak is also the piston guide, I can grab it after a quick burst. The barrel gets hot as hell, the ultimak is not in direct contact with the barrel.
I am going to order one for my AK but just want to know, if i'm not gonna mount a $500 dot sight on it can i expect a moderate priced scope to work, or is the heat build up to great.
BTW, I have poly furniture, so the filing at the UltiMAK bolt/bracket locations is indiscernible from the exterior. The 1" UltraDOT with low rings has such a low profile it's sleek looking.
I can't recommend the UltiMAk enough. If you have a decently well-assembled AKM, and mine is a US receiver kit, this mount is the best available for an AK/red dot combination.
I installed the Ultimak per the directions, leaving it free float without overlapping the gas tube, but changed my mind and reinstalled it fully overlapping the tube stub. I didn't like the idea of all the extra gas escaping at the front of the Ultimak.
Mounted a 1" UltraDOT with B-Square low rings and it is PERFECT. Without even adjusting the UltraDOT I've got a co-witness with the iron sights.
I had to file the hand guard at the Ultimak bolt/bracket locations, and a little at the front.
There appears to be no difference in performance between the two designs. The forces being exerted on the piston and carrier in both designs are equal in the first half an inch of travel, which takes place in the gas block. This is the concept that is applied to the M1 family, where the piston stays in the gas block while the bolt carrier and op-rod continue back under it's own momentum. The tube is simply a guide that insures the gas piston returns reliably to the gas block.
should have my m1-b by this weekend. Cant wait to put my old aimpoint compm2 on...really interested in how much the red dot will speed up and accurize targeting of an ak
Just got my M1-B yesterday. I'm not a "read the directions" kind of guy, so I really appreciate you showing how the clamps can be temporarily installed before installing the hand guard.
By the way, I first saw the UltiMAK in a Nutinfancy AR v. AK video. While I won't be mounting an Aimpoint M4 on my $400 AKM, it looked to be the the answer to a problem I've been trying to solve since I bought the AKM.
The UltiMAK turns the AKM into a scout rifle with a red dot sight. How cool is that?
The gas port holes on the sides are a cosmetic feature. There are some AK's out there that have this feature on the original gas tube with the idea being that more gas could escape out the sides, reducing the force on the piston and bolt carrier. In either case, the excess gas pressure is going to go around the piston in the tube and dump out into the receiver and out the ejection port. UltiMAK offers both models for those who want to stick closer to their original system.
Nothing like watching a novice work on and AK.

What screws are used for the tube mount, I am asking just in case I have to get some extra and keep in the range box.

@lazadar
#8-32 x 1/2" Socket Head Cap Screw. It uses a 9/64" Short Arm Hex Key.

With the optic mount. There's an option for gas port holes or without port holes. What is the benifit of the gas ports?
