  • :)

  • Could totally See Stewart do this, This was fucking funny :D

  • AMAZING.

  • I <3 John Oliver.

  • Excellent Oliver. The Zen part is brilliant.

  • 191 Viacom execs thumbed this video down.

  • neh neh o.o but... the writers strikes been over forever. wonder what happened.

  • if youre ever in doubt just flip over the table and run away

  • using this for a report on how the internet has changed how television companies are makeing money.

  • Second best thing to come out of the writer's strike (after Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog)

  • do i get my ipot now or in the mail~!?

  • OMG what bra was she wearing? I totally want that

  • Did the writers win?

  • yup!

  • lol i luv oliver, they need him more on the show

  • I clicked there!

    I want an ipod!

  • daily show did fine without writers

  • @anestheticroses

It dropped in ratings until Colbert, Stewart, and Coco decided to "fued".

  • Gee without writers theres no finished content, once the content is created it is worth billions, but studio heads dont think writers should be entitled to internet royalties....wow, this is a tough one LOL* good job writers, dont let those fucking PIGS push you around!!!

  • your on the internet.......

  • Yes I'm on the internet as are you, what exactly is your point? I'm showing support for artistic talent do u have a problem with that? Or are you a typical 'troll' seeding useless comments to get someone to interact with you?....

  • where do you get off saying anything like that to me, shit you have even contributed anything to this site

  • tds writers rule.

  • Daily Show s Asif Mandvi Joins Last Airbender...

  • God Bless you sir!

  • More casting on M. Night Chameleons next movie, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Its based on the anime cartoon of the same name, and the name is probably going to be the most recognizable thing about it.

  • lol 0:06 is the best part because he stops looking like a dumbass from there on. lol omg hes a funny stupid red neck.

  • Haha the tags:) Great it's over.. And people don't hate on Jon Stewart. he is also a very important part of the show. Both the writers, staff, crew. All are important. Personally i would'nt watch if Jon was'nt there. He is just great. But without the writers there would'nt be a show.

  • It's good to see the writers weren't letting their skills go to waste during the strike. Loved the cutting humour of this.

  • in my opininon it's the writers who do the most important work...

  • Talent should definitely be rewarded!

  • nice touch with the John Oliver bit

  • A wonderful relic of the writer's strike.

  • 1 billion bucks,eh? hmmm..lets see...oh yeah,2 corders and a dime,for the lil shits

at viacom, good show btw that was funny lol

  • What the heck is your problem? You're just all riled up because you don't understand the jokes. No need to be hating...Those poor writers!

  • MY BAD SORRY

  • JOHN OLIVER!

  • lol john oliver

  • Impressive range of topics tagged in this video. I was looking forward to the sleepy kittens.

  • John Oliver owned you guys!

  • yea that is John Oliver

  • is that john oliver at the end?

  • HA that is john oliver! =P i think hes way funnier than john stewart.. so is Rob Riggle and Wyatt

  • yes

  • geez hate people using other's name to bring attention...

  • Um, no, "the" fan in question is male & self-identifed as gay: Chris Corker, YouTube celebrity. Check what's being referenced in the video before presuming I don't know the person's gender (or the uses of the word "gay").

What I'm getting at, in response to the negative votes my comment's received, is stereotyping around homosexuality. This crying may be part of Corker's image, but it's not necessarily "heartbreakingly gay."

Sorry for the late response. Just saw this.

  • Jason, nice to see your pretty, subtle face. :)

    Love ya,

    -Dr. Bob

  • what was Posh thinking

  • John Oliver!!

  • So VIACOM behaved poorly. And...?

Considering writers (and specifically comedy writers) benefit from everyone else's work or life (such as that Spears adoring, tearful teenager shot who -to my knowledge- is not even a celebrity and whose footage was hardly necessary in order for an intellectual to prove a point), I don't see what's the big deal when the situation turns on you.

People are using your work for their benefit, the same way you used other people.

Or did you pay that kid?

  • Oo, why so defensive?

Could it be that I just hit a nerve?

And pal, my f@ck is fine. It does not need a gag. Your mouth, however...

  • wow you just don't get how much of a bumbling idiot you are.

What you are saying is the writers should not be complaining since they use other people for their material.. Anyone has the right to write about others, there is a thing in America called freedom of speech and press.. You fucking lametard. There is not a freedom called "Lets hire people to make you money and then not pay them for their work" Unless you can point that out in the United States Constitution dickwad.

  • The dramatic and manipulative way that so called 'free speech' is used in the USA (not 'America' - That's a continent) I call:

    'HIGHSCHOOL PEER PRESSURE REVISITED'

  • Crassly insulting a stranger is just poor argumentation. Surprising you left out the ode to american ignorance "communist nazi".

Now, favouring only the free speech (such as a comment) that supports your cause, is fascist. And since previously you went as far as attempting to decypher the obvious, let's try topics, OK?:

    - This isn't about free speech. It's about MONEY;

    - Writers feed off of people without any concern for them;

    - Writers couldn't give any less a damn about free speech.

  • HI ARE YOU A BRITISH PERSON

Was that insulting enough for you, or what.

  • lol @ tags.

  • lmao, this is funny.

but he definitely has a point.

  • lol john oliver

  • they have my support.

  • ah, yes... days when millions of people died in wars instead of thousands, women couldn't vote, people were less informed and isolated from other ideas, and most of the world would never see things like the numa numa guy, and mail would still be delivered by hand. also: VIACOM NAZI!

  • You could always choose to not have the internet, jackass. Seems you're doing a shit job of it.

  • You have to laugh about these things.

  • lol, nice video. Good to see the Daily Shows traditional comparison of hypocrisy is still going strong no matter what the circumstance.

  • These guys are such geeks.

  • haha john oliver :) - and I all for writers rights! :)

  • Who cares what anti-Union people think? None of you people pay for entertainment anyway. Workers need to stick together.

  • It is a tough case and even if the original writers win, YouTube still wins because it takes time to navigate through the bureaucracy; in the meantime, the content remains (which is fine with me).

  • John Oliver.. you rock... And this is completely golden. The people who say this sucks are probably 13 and have no idea about the issues of the world outside they're bong.

Pots good and all, but seriously, get some knowledge

  • lol i think this video should be under "comedy" instead of "entertainment" because it's hilarious!

  • Way to go J. Oliver !

  • dont judg un less you want to be judged you obviously watch alot of bs that goes on in American Cities...dude im in the country...(The Palouse look it up) were all gettin screwed by the big man...continued...

  • i just got this Strike.... no F$#$ing way 1billion thats screwed im with you .... did you (the wrighters) want to post something on this and wow this is fucked

  • Hollywood creates people?

  • Simple solution for people who don't like Hollywood: don't watch the movies or go live in the region. there done!

see there are a lot of people who like hollywood movies and this is a matter of oppinion and so you can't do anything about it.

  • i just found out that john stewarts real name is "john lebowitz" ? !?

  • Well, yeah, he's Jewish. And besides that, it's not like its a secret; it's on Wikipedia. What's the big deal? TV personalities change their names all the time. After all, Stephen Colbert (with the silent T) is actually Stephen Colbert (Stee-van Coal-burt).

  • Something like that, yeah. He said that "Leibowitz" was "too Hollywood" once. ^_^

  • Way to pick out random bad things about a country when I've seen plenty of bad things in most countries. There's a reason why US films constantly top the box-offices internationally as well. A European journalist actually said this; that the media biases a European to the point where they are enjoying an episode of "24" one night, then bashing America the next morning. One of the last few accepted prejudices accepted in the world. Anti-Americanism.

  • I'm not saying that you're an American who dislikes America (although your name seems to simply otherwise) nor am I bashing you. I'm trying to make a point where it's probably best to discuss problems within a country without any personal agendas; and to try to allow another source of media to bias you while you criticize the other. This seems to be causing more cultural tension today.

  • I like the very end of that, it really is true. Especially when cosidering that an average network writer makes more than a surgeon, and a cable writer makes more than a pilot, you get overpaid enough, stop complaining.

    w w w . A M P T P . o r g

  • i'm very sorry that i accidentally happened upon your bickering and senseless exchange of virtually useless information

  • It's two cents for every dollar earned by producers who post their shows online due to advertising (divide over a hundred million dollar by fifty, and that is how much they are fighting for). Also, the writers and additional four cents for every dollar earned through DVD sales. If you know economics, then you failed math.

  • You definitely don't know about "residuals." Apparently, you didn't study economics either.

  • As you all have probably heard, Bill O'Reilly suggested that he would participate in a lynching of Michelle Obama if he thought she was worthy of such treatment.

Please call FOX's automated comment line and tell them how you feel about O'Reilly. It's about time we got this guy fired. Please call, it will only take a minute. Do it for the Obamas.

  • Funny, the strike just ended it sure looks like the writers "fixed all that shit".

  • Moron.

  • Ya know, the contract was up. They have every right to renogiate. That's how contracts work. They expire, then every body is free to fight it out.

The entire cost of what they're asking for is less than ONE Viacom CEOs yearly bonus.

  • fucking GREEDY bitches

  • Well, that was insightful, and showed a clear understanding of the situation.

It's good that you can vent here, though, and give your dog a break from being kicked.

  • i am a manager, i believe there are enough laws that are rich and explicit.

What more do you want ?

  • Hey thestupid:

You say 'if it's not in your contract to get money then I feel nothing for ya'. It IS in their contract. If you'd done any research on the strike you'd know that resids. are payment for orig. creative content that's compensatory for lack of full pay up front. After a film/show makes an agreed upon amnt. the writer gets a % of sales as back pay. The studios tried to get out of paying CONTRACTUALLY OWED $ w/ streaming media, dumbass.

Hasn't the AMPTP PR dept. fired you yet?

  • I've changed my mind completely..

This is all about the writers being whiney over the fact that they dont get paid for internet shows..

If weren't for this we be being intertained now!

  • Well, that's like saying that Tim Burton didn't own Nightmare before Christmas because he got payed to direct and create it. Which is kinda true, since Disney now owns it. But i'm pretty sure that doesn't meant tim burton doesn't deserve a share of profits tha Disney is now getting from sales of Nightmare b4 xmas stuff.

Its not something for nothing. Its a share of revenue from something the writers created and they deserve a share.

  • very mature. that really helps people take you seriously.

  • You know, I really think people have lost the ability to argue these days without cursing like an uneducated moron. I know there is power behind those words, but the word 'fuck' has been run into the ground.

  • thestupid and 99966:

Go discover fire. Make some cave drawings. That seems about your speed. Arguing the points of the WGA strike...you're not there yet.

  • What the fuck is up with these people bashing the writers? They work their asses off to provide you people with your entertainment while you sit on your asses. the least you could do is support them in fighting for their rights. They're getting screwed over by rich asshole CEO's that are making tons of money and they dont want to admit that they need to give a small bit out. They deserve to get paid as much as anyone else. We all work for each other. Respect your fellow workers.

  • I still don't get what the fuck you are saying, asshole.

  • Go fuck yourself you dumb piece of shit.

  • What are you even talking about?

  • Everything about this video is great..

The points, the tags, the parodies, and the guy talking..

    THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING!

  • Fuck you dumbass.

  • Go kill yourself you dumbass piece of shit.

  • You are a fucking retard. I can't even understand what you are talking about.

  • That was sweet :) PAY THEM NOW!

  • Movies and Tv Shows that where stoped mid season will start up again if the writers vote for the new contract proposed by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

  • lol noob

  • now i see why john does it and not this guy

  • I'm just saying Hollywood's distribution monopoly is slowly but surely going away and that will be a great thing for creativity and opening up access for new emerging cinema/tv talent. People will watch what they want to watch given the availability. I hate the politics, lies, and bullshit of this strike, but support the spirit of demanding what is fair.

  • yeah we really NEED these 'writers".coz I enjoy GARBAGE on TV.hahaha.yeah we really NEED the "SKILLS" of these people.hehehe.

  • Mr. Rothstein is quite creepy..

  • Well we've all enjoyed our little romp posting opinions about the fucking strike which conveniently improved the balance sheet for broadcasters while losing thousand of jobs otherwise protected by unions, holding the WGA membership to blame for the unscrupulous back room politics of both leaderships while the public realized TV sucks.

The only thing good that came out of this labor dispute is that it foreshortened the monopoly of Hollywood distribution, which will be replaced by internet. SOON

  • I second this. Although i really like the Tv shows and movies they make they are very de-generative.

+ the writers probrably get paid more than any of us. millions a year, but they still bitch about how they can't buy another solid gold Humvee, fuck those lazy ass writer bastards.

  • Your comment could legally be considered slander. THe only degenerate is you a behemoth with nothing better to do than log on with several names causing trouble and hoarding child pornography. Everyone is part Jewish but you are just a filthy creature.

  • ACtually it would be libel, slander is verbal. You also have to prove damage to reputation

  • How very Orwellian of you, Mr. Redstone........

  • If he keeps it up;

Redstone is going to give moguls a bad name.

I always wondered where they got the idea for the Crypt keeper... Ah; Showbiz.

  • I love John Oliver for this.

  • That's why I love the Daily Show. Its cast totally support the writer's strike (thus, John Oliver is there) and Jon Stewart offered to pay his production staff with his own money since they were also affected by the strike.

Seriously though, Viacom should soak their heads and the writers should just receive their demands...it's probably not as ridiculous as Viacom's...5/5

  • Striking Writers and out of work bums look the same don't they?

  • Isn't that what most writers are anyways? :-P

  • I think Sumner had cheek implants.

  • lol john oliver

  • Best of luck to you writers.

    From Canada! :)

  • WGA Director/mulitmillionaire David Young has a long history of driving employers out of business and putting 1000s of people out of work permanently. Now he's using the same hardball tactics for the WGA. Results include 10,000s of people out of work, the pilot season for 2008 wiped out, and all the jobs for writers, actors, IA members, etc, that would have been realized from those new pilot programs gone. At least Mr. Young hasn't compromised his ego just so people can support their families.

  • This is 1/4 the story of David Young's biggest loss among many successes. A strike to acquire the most basic rights for a group of overworked & underpaid textile workers.

The Co., Guess, moved it's labor headquarters of the country so it could hire where labor is cheap & exploitable instead of negotiating fairly. The co. put people out of work, not Mr. Young.

Somehow I don't see this happening in Hollywood but go ahead, spread the anti-strike, anti-union propaganda.

  • I met David Young 2 years before the strike and his goals were both reasonable and focussed. He struck (no pun intended) me as a person who very deeply cared about the welfare of workers.

I don't think it's wrong to have a track record that upholds human rights in the workplace, and I think it's misguided to believe media powerbrokers care more about people than Young.

Per media blackout you and I have no idea what Young is going through -- but I bet it's not easy to stand firm.

  • Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't agree with Viacom's stupid lawsuit or the writers who would hope to profit from lawsuits of this nature.

  • I support the individuals struggle to make a living wage, but I don't know if I like the writer's strike. It involves intellectual property issues, which, I'm not sure I agree with in the first place.

Honestly, I think intellectual property "rights" stifle discourse and throw up unnecessary barriers between people. Trying to stake a claim on a thought or idea while also assigning the thought or idea a dollar value seems like dangerous territory to me.

  • Unions are for useless scum. Maybe they're overpaid. I think it's awesome that it's not even really hurting the ratings which shows they aren't worth as much as they think they are....You get paid what you're worth. Obviously they aren't worth that much...

  • gwbushpos got pwned! that is, her or his account got suspended.

  • Hahaha!

  • Does the daily show have its writers back now? Because the quality of the new episodes is very good.

  • The internet should and always be reserved for pornography, piracy, and online gaming <3. There's simply no space left for antiquated Television advertising, Null zuppers for your coffers Mr television fatties. And to you, the writers of America its high time you ditched creating comedy gold for those who least deserve it <3.

  • also, this video is fucking great. writers should just cut out the middle man and do it all themselves like this

  • earlier on tonight i was on a mission to post a brick to the writers with a note saying "throw at self" because i was pissed off at missing my favourite shows. before i did that i decided to find out all about the strike and why they were striking. i am now a full supporter of the writers. its not about the big shows that the writers make a shit load for, its about the writers as a whole. the big shots like family guy and heroes dont need to strike, but its the lesser shows that need the money.

  • John Oliver is hysterical in this.

  • Why can't these guys just give them what they want? It's all the writers work anyway.

  • Seriously, what the hell? All they want is more money, because they get none (in fact they lose money) every time someone downloads their show from iTunes, for instance. THEY made it, THEY get no money. So shut up.

  • I wish the writers would come back. I hate the daily show and the colbert report now that they're doing them without writers. Both shows really lost a lot of their zing.

  • Are you kidding!! I don't watch th daily show much but i know the Colbert Report is like ten billion times better! that guy is my hero.
