China will not overtake America. They lack innovation. I do agree that in the 1940's Latin America and China were at par but China now has surpassed Latin America. Brazil is emerging with Lulu but they are still well behind.
@otterboxiphone: Asians are smart. But China lacks innovation because they're content in the manufacturing ghetto. My co-workers who worked for the 2008 Beijing olympics also mentioned to me their education system is in need of reform.
Most of today's INNOVATION still comes from the West and the top universities in the world are still in the U.S.
@pdynamics1 I respect your point of view but I do admit that what Chinese are currently doing are just duplicating items at lower cost. But everything has a start and I am sure with their manpower the innovation will come. Please go check out how many items/inventions Chinese have patented last year. Just remember do NOT demonize communism since China is no longer a pure communist society. In fact, it has changed so much that it is not recognizable anymore.
@otterboxiphone: The chinese gov't stifles any innovation that they perceive as a threat to their authority. For example, the censorship of the Internet. This is not healthy for innovation. I do agree that they need to start somewhere and they've established that foundation. Also, one thing I forgot to mention is many of the folks getting rich in China are gov't affiliated.
Once they reform their education and choose to let innovation flourish, then I will concede.
@pdynamics1 I don't think China intents to take over the US either. Relax, Chinese are not as crazy as the North Korea leader. If China wants to trigger WW3, it would have already happened long time ago. If you want to have hard evidences, then try to look at our history: Japan and Germany were the evil axis countries which nearly destroyed the entire world.
21st century is the turning point the West needs to adapt.China helping Latin America,Africa and the third world is real.these countries will follow the foot step of China keep developing ,growing richer,prosperous..that China wish to make it happen.China wish to trade with them instead to the West alone.
@Barrackobama1000 You are absolutely right! One cannot and should not expect one poor country to stay endlessly poor. Everything can change. The US will remain strong due to its rich culture and a huge variety of elites they have and also for its vast natural resource. But it should be unreasonable for the US to block the development of other countries (let alone China, think about India, Brasil, and many others).
Stop with the BS here.... The US is the only country that is at China's mercy! noone else views China as a superpower!!! Stop spreading your legs to the pathetic US media! I am not suggesting that China is a benign power... I am suggesting that they are one of the great powers of the 21st century, along with (and at the same level as) the US, India, Russia and Brazil! Do some research and you will realise that what I have said is true! China just has the US by its balls!
China has US by the balls? Not hardly. If China starts a war with US, China's assets will be FROZEN. Trade with China will be cut as will that of several US allies. Also, China is STUCK buying US debt because if it doesn't, it can't sell its goods; plants will have to lay off people which will cause riots in China and possibly even political upheaval. You WISH the US was at China's mercy, but in really China is at the US' mercy.
I suspect that China won't be very willing to appreciate its currency until its middle class has significant purchasing power relative to those of developed countries. It wants to reap the benefits of relying on external markets for now, but that's just not sustainable and they will get more if they do the same thing through internal demand.
You must realize that China's debt holdings are not investment, they actually cost money to China. I rightfully believe that they don't want to keep things as they are for very long contrarily to what people think, it's just they are trying to find the right moment to implement changes without their castle of cards collapsing.
It's not in China's interest I believe to keep things as they are. Their US debt holdings are not real investment since they actually lose money from them, they are part of a monetary policy that was intended to foster economic development through exports. Other reasons why they peg their currency is to facilitate exchanges and prevent speculative attacks, etc. I suspect that China won't be willing to do away with its peg until its middle class has significant purchasing power.
i don't see how China can grow to overtake the USA the current relationship allows for China to produce cheaply at a rate that is suited for US consumption if US consumption dives who will buy Chinese goods the Chinese masses absolutely can not afford to pay the great price especially when worker compensation will go up increasing product price... America's collapse will surely affect the rest of the world and their ability to trade with china..

To compare developing BRIC nations to a 100 year old superpower is akin to comparing the Greeks and the barbarians.

Bring a person who can actually speak English next time... rofl
China GDP (PPP) will surpass that of the U.S. around 2020. It can do so just by pumping up infrastructure and by developing its internal market.
