  • Kurt even named his daughter after the women in this band, just goes to show how much this band influenced Kurt. I find it funny how the Scottish seem to be involved in everything!

  • I hate reading the comments sections in these videos. They remind me of just how fucking annoying I was when I was a spotty little Nirvana fanboy. Thank god I grew out of it. They were good. There is no denying it. But they didn't produce enough to be considered as greats. Sadly. They probably weren't even the best of their generation, and they certainly can't be compared to people like Led Zeppelin, Bowie, Dylan, The Beatles etc. It's not even close.

  • no shit they helped kurt this is a great version of the oringinal

  • Doesn't matter that their version is the original it holds nothing against the nirvana version

  • Haha, yeah right, say this is equal to the band who has sold 50,000,000 albums!

  • @TheRiffCalendar So you're saying ABBA is a better band than Nirvana? (here's a hint: record sales mean jackshit when it comes to actual band or album quality.)

  • @OpheliaImmortal No one is as good as Nirvana.

  • The Vaselines didn't write this. Its an old Christian song.

  • @smallandorange If you'd actually listened to the song, you'd have realized that the lyrics and tune to the Vaselines' version are entirely different from the "old Christian song" that you cite (which was more of a children's Sunday school song). It was written as a piss take on the original.

  • @grainbelt01 Thanks for your feedback. Actually, I am quite familiar with the origins of the song. I am a student of music history as well as a Christian and have heard several performances of it. I am quite aware that the Vaseline’s rendition differs from its original hymn form or the more popular versions sung in “Sunday School”. I was assuming that most people who were watching the video likely followed the Vaseline’s to some extent.

  • @smallandorange I thought it was so painfully obvious, given song titles such as “Bitch”, and “Sex with an X”, “The Devil's Inside Me”, that intent of what the Vaseline’s were doing with it is so completely different than what Nellie Talbot had in mind when she composed the hymn over 100 years ago, that it didn’t require elaboration. Anyway, maybe I was giving you too much credit -or maybe picking apart people you don’t know online makes you feel good.

  • @smallandorange You're wrong, the Christian song is "I'll be a sunbeam" - the opening line of this is "Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam"

Also with Scotland being the country it is I doubt Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee ever went to "sunday school"

  • The fact that you had to put that the Vaselines wrote this is sad.

Any real Nirvana fan would know that.

Not bad on the uploader, just the idiots who say otherwise.

  • Nirvana didnt record it with a different title exactly, The Vaselines rerelased the song with that title changed to what we know it as now.

  • I think blank about (expletive) blank, but everybody knows that blank's more popular blank is much better than blank, so blank you.

  • stop cutting me off as I try to get a hard to find song. jeez 5 min plz

  • why is every comment about nirvana covering this...why cant people just say beautiful song. No need to point out the irony in this comment

  • i like it but i think nirvana's version is slightly better than the original

  • @TheAirsoftNewb...i meant to give you a thumbs up...that was an accident....sorry....the vaselines indeed made this song first, and a beuatiful song it is

  • These guys did a good job with this song.. It's kind of haunting.

And of course Cobain did a good cover too.

  • It SOUNDS exactly like Nirvana. Jack Hole.

  • your an idiot. the vaselines made this song. Nirvana just made the cover of it.

  • This song is an original composition ...

  • yep, Christian song. Well, the woman who wrote the lyrics and the man who wrote the music followed Evangelism. Ev angel ism. Which is a Protestant Christian movement which began in Great Britain in the 1730s. This can be broken down even more with different "wings" being formed etc. WOW, how boring and nice of Religion not to be about war! Just so you know people!

  • pretty sure its an old christian song, not mormon, still awesome though

  • The Vasalines were one of Kurts biggest influences. He covered three of their songs I know about.

  • "JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS THIS BAND WROTE THE ORIGINAL, NIRVANA COVERED IT UNDER DIFFERENT TITLE. BOTH ARE EQUALLY GOOD SO STOP FIGHTING AND CALLING EACH OTHER NAMES. THANKS. "

Actually it's a mormon children song in the first place.

  • ReallY?! O_O

    That's weird...

  • Yeah! That's right! Mormon's aren't so bad after all. :)

  • It's actual name is "I'll Be a Sunbeam". This is a parody about it.

  • scottland are the best musicially vaselines, lloyd cole, camera obscura, belle sebastian, franz ferdinand, sons and daughters, the fire engines, orange juice, simple minds, glasvegas and offcourse jesus & the marychains

  • Omg Nirvana rulezzz Chris did it better!!!oneoneone

  • you mean Kurt he was the lead singer of nirvana!!! O_O?? and for me both of the are as good depending on what music you like!!

  • No shit Sherlock o_O

  • what!?

  • Comment removed

  • we are!

  • I have wonderful Satanic radar! The devil actually wrote most of the Vaselines' songs.

I can almost imagine the horns sprouting out of the Hitler-obsessed, dog-walking, trash-talking Scouseophiliacs here.

    Cheers!

  • Jesus don't want you for a sunbeam sir!!!

    Cheers!

  • This song be the type of Devil-chanty Capt. Cobain would lead the boyz in while erst amid the seal hunting grounds aboard the sloop Nevermind.

When the main sail was close-hauled, Capt. Cobain would come to the forecastle with his tin-whistle and roust us from our sleeps.

It was a sorry thing and madness I ever signed on the sloop Nevermind.

  • I like the comment it is deep, can I put it on my channel I am asking you because I don't use things from others I don't copy them I mean!?

  • Sure, if you are talking about my Capt. Cobain rant, that's cool.

  • what does that mean? maybe dumb it down for a dumb person like me :)

  • guys get the fuck over yourselves,

    facts:

it was an old, scottish church song

    vaselines did it modern

    nirvana covered it.

    kk?

  • haha i love this comment:D props to the down to earth dude/chick who typed it

  • its not their song its an old christian song

  • WTF ??.. the christian song in which this song is based. has same title and tune but totally diferent lyrics.. .

  • The Vaselines are'nt Mormons though you eedjits, their a fine Scottish band and thats an old folk harmony. Get Tae fuck the lota ya!

  • @MikeyBlackheart geiese yer fuucken jaiket cunt

  • Mormons have good taste in music I'd say.

  • I thought it was like an old Irish church song...(eh, same thing as the 'old christian song'

  • i thought this was a "rendition of an old christian song".

  • But we do it the vaselines way

  • its actually a mormon children's song with the same title as this.. in mormon sunday school the youngest group of kids are called sunbeams i think

  • dam mormons...

  • kurt liked good music, what can you say. as far as kurts voice, i always heard he was always very down on himself on how he sounded and didnt understand why anybody liked his singing... but like someone else said below... it was just so unique at the time and so fit the music... it was the perfect storm.

  • But Kurt wasn't a bad singer, and he could scream into your soul!!!

  • /watch?v=Te3sNnBkQ7E&feature=c hannel best cover ever, watch and comment..

  • you all moan about this but if it wasnt for the vaselines singing it then nirvana would never have sung it, they only done it because they were a fan of the legend that is eugene kelly, remember son of a gun and mollys lips they covered these songs didnt they.

  • the soong is called "jesus DONT want me for sunbeam", thats what he sing!!!

  • Shitty, where's the beginning of the song?

  • If one would listen to the live recording of the Nirvana version of this song, Kurt says something to the sort of: "this next song is by the vasolines, its a rendition of an old christian song, we do it the vasolines way... so the debate can stop, everyone can go to sleep. Props to mojodylan for posting this.

  • they both sing it good!

  • They both sing it well, actually. Good and well are commonly misused in the English language, especially in speech. I do agree that they both play and sing the song very well.

  • Owned ahaa

  • Basic wiking will tell you that there was a christian Hymn called I'll Be a Sunbeam. The Vaselines wrote the song Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam in 1987 satirizing it. In 1992 they redid it as Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam clarifying the nature of the song. Then Nirvana covered the latest version for their Unplugged show.

The Vaselines wrote it borrowing the term "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam" from a christian hymn.

  • Eugene kelley has a good voice but the girls don't at all. And no im not being a sexist macho guy cuz i like alot of female performers, they just aren't good. Eugene rocks though.

  • According to Wikipedia, the "jesus doesn't (note the n't) want me for a sunbeam" was first recorded by the Vaselines and later by Niravna. Check out the site for more info.

  • its a rendition of a cristian classic but the vaselines did it before nirvana

  • exactly ^

  • I believe this was originally an old or ancient Christian song.

  • mope lol, it's Eugine Kelly (Veseline's vocalist wrote this song)

  • You know what, I am not really sure. I'm just going to take your word for it.

  • its a cristian song

  • Hi, I know your comment was a while back now, but my aunt, used to sing a song at sunday school titled "Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam"

so you are correct:-) it is an old song (christian)......

  • luv the vasalines 2nd fave band right now, vampire weekend is first. (i know there very diffrent.)

  • R u shitting me, the girl can't fucking sing. Nirvana's unplugged version kicks much more ass. This is poor singing. But that's just my personal, CORRECT, opinion. lol

  • yeah, bob dylan cant fucking sing either, and he is one of the most influential musicians of all time.

kurt himself wasnt a great singer, but as grunge should have taught you, music isnt all about the vocals.

  • That's definetely true. Kurt had a distinct voice though that went pretty perfectly with the music and the era. I just don't feel anything with them singing in this video like I do with Kurt's voice. But you're right, the music itself is what makes grunge grunge.

  • I think this version is better than Nirvana's for sure. :] Personally.

I'm in love with Kurt. But I can admit when he's been beat. This band is phenomenal. Probably my favorite band right now.

  • was this the gig in ABC2 in Glasgow a couple of years ago? i was at it, it was class!

  • its an amazing song. personally i prefere nirvanas version. you can say it is all credit shud be theirs. but they werent the ones who made it famous, and Nirvana adapted the song. doesnt matter whos better at playing it. nirvana are famous for it. their version got famous, and honestly even the vaselines would say that nirvana made this song what it is. so quit arguing about who wrote it. half the musicians these days have writers writing their music anyway.

  • @hydra8 I see that you speak for the Vaeslines . You must be a psychic channeler. If it makes you happier that Nirvana "made it famous," then that's great. The relative fame level of the band is your automatic judgment of quality, rather than "whos [sic] better at playing it." Fame is relative, and it is not permanent. Nirvana has a very dedicated fan base, a couple of songs on the golden oldies grunge play list, but beyond that, nothing.

  • @phallusbravo wow that was an old comment to reply to, but yeah, no one would know what this song is outside of the vaselines fan base, nirvana did make this song famous. Fame doesnt judge who is better at playing it. but their version of playing got made it famous. i still personally prefer nirvana's version just because thats my preference:)

Fame doesnt judge who is better at playing it. but their version of playing made it famous. i still personally prefer nirvana's version just because thats my preference:) you're entitled to yours

  • beautiful song loved it after kurt covered them at Paramount theatre

  • Don't expect me to cry.

    Don't expect me to lie.

    Don't expect me to die.

Dudes, some years ago it was cool to be christian, i as a matter of fact christianism is only in the shit because of the curch's institucionalism.

  • did i forget to say that eugene kelly is a genius?

  • c'mon kids... music isn't a competitive sport. credit to the vaselines, this is a powerful song especially for anyone who grew up in an oppressively christian environment (and it aint a version of a christian song, it just borrows a couple of lines from christian songs and twists the meaning) ... nirvana did a great cover of it but the fact that kurt was listening to, and being inspired by, slightly obscure fey scottish indie bands is just part of the reason why nirvana were just so great...

  • Are you 12?

  • No..are you 4 and tone deaf??

  • Actually, from what I heard they didn't write this song, this is a traditional Christian song I believe, but i could be wrong.

  • A traditional Christian song wouldn't have the lyrics 'don't expect me to cry, for all the reasons you had to die' in relation to Jesus? I think it's built off of a Christian song though...

  • yeah, I know that always did sound funny to me. Maybe the melody was taken, not sure, anyway, thats just what I heard someone say.

  • I think Kurt says it before he played it on unplugged. Perhaps it's just like a parody? who knows lol.

  • ya it is its a hymn named I'll Be A Sunbeam. The Vaselines Parodied It. And Thats Where Kurt Covered Them... Actually Kurt Was A Fan Of Them From What I've Heard

  • He most likely was, if he covered their song

  • Kurt idolized the Vaselines. I mean, he named his daughter after Frances McKee. He loved them.

  • @jesusinbobform WHAT ABOUT FRANCES FARMER?

  • cool....ty kurt

  • what r the chances of people reading up b4 they make bone comments? 0? blah blah carry on knobedds

  • i'm the biggest nirvana fan in the world. haha!

  • The biggest Nirvana fan in the world would not make a comment like that. Who do you think wrote this song?

  • it's a joke. chill the fuck out. and besides don't say what others would do ad wouldn't do. that leads to ignorance. thank you mr. Remixer.

  • suena muy ñoña gringa y evangelista

  • now i know were belle and sebastian got their ideas from...

  • yeah but they sound boring kurt knew how to make a song sound great

  • explain how this at all is boring? i hope the Vaselines tour again.

  • how can people call themselves Nirvana fans and not know that Kurt always covered vaselines songs. That spellbinder 20 guy is a complete moron

  • @kasperdon yeah Molly's Lips was another! Like Kurt said... "they were very punk rock"

  • @kasperdon and son of a gun ;)

  • wow! this is the original it's so cool

  • I really like The Vaselines version.

I've joined it with a Delay Lama, and i hope i'm not out of bounds here to plug it!

    It's at /watch?v=Z-B8dqXSvkQ

    :)

  • actually thi is the original verion. nirvana did the cover

  • its their song

  • lmao its their version, and its an old christian song anyway

  • dude it's a nirvana COVER of the vasolines and you WISH you lived in canada! ;-)

  • slayer?

  • why slayer?

  • Me too! She's pretty! ;p

  • I respect this band and I respect Kurt, but this version is yaaaawnnn quite boring. I would rather date the girl in the center. :P

  • i concur

  • green day is shit rich people music

  • there alright

    the usuall seel outs tho

  • Greenday is just another cliche band who only makes music now to appeal to a fake genre, by that I meen a genre of music that wouldn't exist without commercialism, such as TV making all teenage girls think their punk if they wear black makeup with pink nail polish, so they need a corresponding music, so Greenday came, I meen at one point they may have been good like, in 1990 or so.

  • they r amazing r u kidding. and how is it rich people music. billie joe (lead singer) dropped outta high chool livd in random basements.. and started playing when he was just 10. they have a ton of talent, and they always sell out. they've been siad to have the greatest concerts becaue of their energy, and they make them a ton of fun. just watch bullet in a bible live tour.... you'll understand then

  • People don't realize a few things. First of all, Kurt Cobain was famous before he deceased, so don't say that his killing himself made him even more famous. Second of all, it's a fucking song. Don't you guys realize that it's such a wonderful song and you guys are just arguing over something foolish? Also, I think both versions of the song are quite good.

  • sir you are shite

  • yeah. i agree...exept for everything you just said

who cares about nirvanas fame. its about the music right ?

o yeah u sold out too, mainstream whore right ?

  • the original version pwns i love what kurt did to the song but damn give props to who actually wrote the fuckin song

  • very true, the sad thing is like the meat puppets songs they did on unplugged will be known as nirvana songs to some people just because nirvana are a bigger band..

  • the original people who wrote the song are probably from the 15th century if you really want to go back but I know what you're saying, hahaha

  • kurt made this song his OWN like all the covers he did. so why argue. differant artist differant song.

  • I bet Kurt liked this version better Ya Fucking dicks

  • kurt improved this song, improved Bowie´s song...and son on.

  • haha, you're funny...So what next? Green Day's Working class Hero is better then John Lennon's original??

Two different versions, two diff point of views, both as amazing as the other. PERIOD.

  • Thank you for making the same point that I wanted to make. I'm too drunk to do it myself.

  • Kurt did all covers he did better then the original

    RIP Kurt

  • you so fuckin right!!!!!!!!

  • Mmmmm not agree with that at all. Bowie's "MWSTW" its much better than Kurt's one in the unplugged.

BUT, the live version og " MWSTW" by nirvana, its pretty raw.

  • thats a funny abbreviation:)

  • Bowie slums, even nina simone he slums...

  • nice cover! only joking

  • lol..

    I like Nirvana's cover better.

  • yeah

  • the version of song by offaloffice is awesome... (look for the skeleton in the list on the right)

  • That one is good, but I like Nirvanas cover better, and yes, God exists, meanieface *hiss*

  • LOL was Kurt joking when he said they "are very punk rock" haha was expecting something different from them..

  • Punk rock is not just idiots with mohawks playing fast chuck barry chords.

  • dude punk is a matter of attitude,

  • It was a children's hymn titled "I'll Be A Sunbeam" The vaselines took the first sentence of the hymn "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam" The Hymn was composed by Nellie Talbot and sung to music composed in 1900 by Edwin O. Excell. Nirvana along with the Meat Puppets covered the song on MTV unplugged and changed the lyrics to "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam".

  • Spot on except the Vaselines did it first & the song name change was well before Vaselines or Nirvana,

  • Nirvana didn't really change the lyrics, just the title. The original version by the Vaselines starts "Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam"

  • Wanst it done by some christian band first then The Vaselines did it with the lyrics: Jesus Doesnt want me for a sunbeam?

  • It was a children's hyme titled "I'll Be A Sunbeam". The vaselines took the first sentence of the hyme. "Jsus wants me for a sunbeam." The Hymn was composed in 1900 by Nellie Talbot.

  • Nirvana's version is way better and rocks more:D

  • beautiful song

  • This song is called 'Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam'.

Nirvana's version was called 'Jesus Doesn't Want Me For a Sunbeam'.

    Love The Vaselines. :c]

  • hah now they`re trying to copy the nirvana's unplugged version!! in their own song!! i've herad the original version from the vaselines and I don't really like it.. the nirvana's is better, nut THIS hahahaha its awful!!

  • their not copying you idiot, it was there song first, they wrote it. so yeah your an idiot

  • dude he said it was their song, relax... we learn to stop name calling in what 3rd grade?

  • High School.

  • I prefer this song sung by Nirvana.

  • very good version but nirvana's best with the accordeon

  • love this song , anybody knows have much money make the vaselines with the nirvana cover in the umplugged album

    thanks from peru !

  • lov them

  • why? no im not just preaching because how'd the world come about? lightning strike the earth and that made the world we live in? highly unlikely but okay, then where'd the ground for the lightning to strike come from, and where'd the heat and such for the lightning? I can't guarentee you the rest that I believe but that I can no doubt assure you of. There is a higher being out there.

  • O_o Fug off godboy, your Mormon mission lies elsewhere... anyone watching THIS video doesn't wanna here it! Salt Lake City is thaddaway, man>>>>>>>>

  • God may exist in the same way that a teacup that launched itself into orbit on its own may exist. that is, it may exist, but its existence would run contrary to what is commonly upheld as common sence
