As a 22-year old American with ambitions on completing my four year EE degree and possibly two PhDs in Physics and Chemistry, this radio show was super depressing. x_x
You have nothing to worry about as long as you have no debts and some savings. Also dont confuse education with schools. As long as you have passion to something you will learn it no matter what school (if any) you attended. Schools dont teach anything of value besides respect and fear of authority and are not about learning but getting good grades. If getting another phd means getting into debt - think twice and rationally not emotionally if you can manage that burden. My 2c.
Yeah, it would only be for the pieces of paper so I can acquire a research position somewhere prestigious. Either way, I'm gonna learn the material. What I'm doing right now is finishing my engineering degree and then just make money for a while to get financially secure and then think about it. It's also quite possible to shift right into a research position with just an engineering degree provided you network correctly and have the ability. Particle Physics and
even if you're not in debt and have a nice amount of savings you're still in big trouble as an American. your savings will be wiped out pretty quickly by inflation, and the bigger the government gets the less job oppurtunities there will be. you probably already know this though...
People tend to vote for politicians that promise to give them the most things. People don't really care anymore who else will be forced to pay for these things. Socialism can be very addicting until the mass killing starts.
Problem with this is Peter will use force of the state to try to model society after his ideals (disclaimer: I happen to agree with him on most economic things) and not all people want to live this way. Why force socialists to live in capitalist society? Isn't this as bad as other way around? Won't this bring about more misery? Why not just get rid of government and leave everyone alone to live their lives as they want?
Schiff is probably an anarchist just like 99% of the people at the Mises Institute. I'm sure he's just operating from a practical standpoint. What keeps people from setting up a socialist commune inside a deregulated capitalistic society? You just pool money, set up contracts, buy a lot of land, and set up rules for membership, also included in the contracts. From there you can live inside a
@selfrealizedexile You need to look at the motive of socialist type people. They think people can't take care of themselves, and they want to help others. They want everyone to be happy and live together peacefully. So to start their OWN socialist community doesn't really solve that motivation. I think those people are totally wrong, of course.. socialism will not bring peace and happiness. But that's just how I perceive their thinking. And yes, I know this post is a year old. Haha

@zbigniewzapora If we had a limited federal government that stuck with defense as needed and foreign deplomacy. The States and Counties could be as socialist or capitalist as they want. As long as no one gets bailed out. Then we can see which system is better.
Limited federal government is an utopia - history of USA shows that from empirical standpoint, also logical and precise arguments of anachists show that from theoretical standpoint. I just want to be left alone - I will take care of myself.
