The frog is fished at a medium pace..A "frog" isn't what a bass always thinks the bait is. That is one reason why there is different colors/ designs.. Also in this video, In my opinion he works it way to fast.
Hey I just recently got two scum frogs and have been using them a lot since , ive caught two nice bass on them but ive missed countless bass. can someone help and tell me how to set the hook better and yes i do wait two second before i try to set the hook. Every time i try to set it it just come out of its mouth.
@epicfishing101 the biggest mistake ppl make when fishing frogs is setting the hook too soon. don't set the hook when the fish blows up the water at the lure. when he hits, lower the rod tip and give the reel about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn to take out the slack (but not so much that it pulls the frog away from the fish). wait about 2-3 seconds, or until you feel the fish pulling your line; then give it a good hard upward hookset. it has to be hard to expose the hooks.
nah you probley wanted that bass for the camera, u must have let him go, but ive had that happen, im not saying its a mistake, its dam near impossible to control that, when u try to find the perfect moment to set the hook...and anybody that fishes frog, knows u gotta give a it a second to let him underwater, WOW he just said that on the vid]eo rgith now, lol..i always get too excited and miss about 80% of my hits, lately...
I wanna f***ing kill myself. I fish all my life and this has never happened to me....i started using these frogs the other day (exact scum frogs) and i missed 25 BASS AND PICKEREL ALL TOGETHER!!! I AM REALLY PISSED AT MYSELF BECAUSE I COULDN'T SEEM TO SET THE HOOK RIGHT!!! BUT MAN I AM PISSED NOT THAT I KNOW NOW....F***!!!!
if thats a 2 lb fish Im a better fisherman than I thought..
On the other hand, your absolutely correct about waiting to hook set. This past weekend I went 6 for 6 on frogs. Keep your rod at about 10 o clock and when you get a hit, point your rod where the hit was. Wait 2 seconds, if you see your frog pop back up, keep fishing, if not, hook set like you never have before. Hooked up! <-- My buddies hate when I yell that.
@Flatzout hes trying to get a reaction strike........yes he is fishing kinda fast but sometimes thats what the big bass want...some times tyou need to deadstick it but it was working for him so give him some props.
Sorry, but people who use 20+ lbs line are not really fisherman at all. Unless your fishing tournements with lots of money on the line, you do NOT need that strong of line. I personally use 10-12 lbs mono and have not had a bass snap me off in at least 2 years. Fighting the fish is part of the SPORT.
I have a question.... At the pond i fish in there is lilly pads, and fish do bite them from under... but here is the thing..... they grow in clumbs and close together... whenever they bite it i usually lose it because it gets tangled... do you have any tips for me to get those bass in?
@thefishmaster123 When u set the hook hold the rod tip HIGH and reel straight in really fast make sure you have your drag pretty tight and use heavy braid 40 maybe 50 lb suffix performance braid does good for me
I got one of these frogs and whenever i get a hit (almost every other cast) I wait 2 seconds and I still cant land one. I am using braided line 10lb and never had a breakoff.
@jyankeesrock When your working in thick cover I would definately recommend it. Usually the fish wont see it when your in thick stuff too, and especially if you work it fast like Eric. But when you do catch a fish on mono and he takes your bait down into thick stuff it adds alot of weight, resulting in snapping of the line in most cases.
i caught on one saturday didnt even hear him hit just sucked it in when i wasnt looking, good tip about cloudy days i usally use this tactic on sunny days
@Fazeddd Well, weather is usally hot, sometimes rainy, after raining is cooler, etc. You know, the normal weather conditions of summer. The place I fish at is a stream that at the beginning has a little brook followed by a bunch of rocks in a shallow part of the stream. (Not deep enough for big fish, just barely big enough for bait fish.) After that, it's pretty much just any other stream with some overhanging trees.
yeah man, slowwww dowwwwn. in stead of pulling it a foot and a half, pop it a couple inches at a time. and dont reel it in the last 10 feet. i can tell you how many hits i get in those last 10.
@tookyflay Hes just working it fast to try and get the active fish to bite, resulting in more action for us to see as they film. I'm sure he doesnt do this is tournaments lol.
My opinion is that if you are setting the hook, then the bass was a small one. I think they need to be about 3/4 pound before they can get the frog completely in their mouths. Smaller than that, and they are just holding it in their teeth. So, you are just missing the small ones, anyway.
scum frog and spro both have drawbacks. My fave lure is the "white mouse" almost impossible to find, but when you do, load up on em, kuz largies hate em!
@9showoffsin1 exactly thsts why he barely caught anything when i fish my frogs sometimes i let it sit alomost two minutes then walk the dog on it real real slow. bass are lazy fish so the easier the meal looks and the more interesting it looks like something they have never seen before then that is what provolks them to smash it. its always better to fish a frog slow
@BASSFISHINGVIDS101 ...Umm ok. A frog sits still and barley moves because it's hunting for food and only movies a little and slowly, "A frog is an ambush hunter." A frog also can’t see the bass that is about to eat it just like seals can’t see a Great White shark coming from below.
can any1 tell me how to set the hooks!! i use the scum frog yesterday and i always pull the hook right out of the bass mouth! i tried to wait for two seconds too but some bass spit the frog back out too!! plz tell me how to set the hooks!! i missed like 4 bass yesterday!!
if you're ripping the hook out of 'er mouth then there is two things you want to do...1st; let the bass go with it for about 1 second...2nd;don't set the hook quite as hard until you're 100% sure that he's not gonna let it go.
It is very important to wait 2 seconds before setting the hook. This may seem like an eternity after a huge strike, but it will increase your hooking % big time! Also, Make sure to use braided fishing line and heavy action rods and reels to pull those big bass out of the heaviest of cover. Set the hook straight up and HARD, and don't relieve the pressure until its in the net.
instead of trying to set the hook right away use a pretty long rod i like a 6' 9" medium action mojo bass st.croix... watch it get crushed then lower ur rod tip the whole way till its almost touching the water then instead of setting the hook first reel till u feel the fish THEN set the hook

@aznghost666 try striking a few times at once, what happens if you are using a plastic frog the hook does not come out properly and gets stuck, so always try and strike a few times if you are not sure.
@aznghost666 Actually, Dean Rojas said he bends the hooks out a little and sets the hook as soon as the strike happens because they usually always swallow the bait when they hit it.
@aznghost666 Every fish is different. Sometimes 2 seconds isn't enough, and sometimes its too much. Usually it works fine. What I do sometimes is pull my line tight too make sure the fish is pulling on it, which means he has it in his mouth, then set hard. Make sure you leave space to set the hook. You dont want your rod at 12 o'clock if you know what I mean.
@aznghost666 they always say to wait but not really you may have to wait but you set the hook when you feel the fish sometimes you may never have to wait
