seit meiner Jugend im Internat, wo unsere Schulklasse-unter der Leitung einer musikalisch begnadeten Nonne- diese ARIE performed hat.-hab ich zum 1.x eine professionelle Aufnahme gehört.! B r a v o!!Antoinette Flaccus
Caballe's beautiful instrument and effortless singing just shine and scintillate here! For an equally gorgeous rendition of this celebrated piece by another goddess of song from Spain, check out Victoria de los Angeles' version, also on You Tube.
Diction isn't quite the point of this aria. Caballe's coloratura is simply astonishing, especially the way she rounds out the ends of the phrases so effortlessly. I can't recall anyone who can sing Purcell this well, and then turn around and sing Solome!!!
@MarkHusey Well, that's a funny turn, since there's no coloratura here, at all! Just coup-de-glote, scooping, piano singing, and a slooower tempo making it all easier.
This is such a wonderful testament to what this woman really knew about singing. The light tone is gorgeous, the runs are perfection. The breathing is unlike anyone else in the world. I was skeptical because she sometimes can let the tempo drag, but here she really adheres to the spirit of the music. Quite simply, brava

It's awful to say, but the pianist is so good as to overshadow the vocal performance in this recording....she certainly has a wonderful voice and it's a beautiful rendition....
Her mastery of the runs, etc. is outstanding and her breath control phenomenal. Her light tone is perfectly matched to the song and her English is pretty good as well (with nary a trace of an accent).
Lovely rendition, and one admires her light touch in the runs. Caballé sang this air in various venues (Teatro Real - Madrid in 1979, Avery Fisher Hall in 1989, etc.), usually with Miguel Zanetti at the piano. The lyrics:
Oh! had I Jubal's lyre, or Miriam's tuneful voice to sounds like his I would aspire, in
songs like hers rejoice, My humble strains but faintly show how much to heaven and
Fantastic!!!

A little too fast, but nicely sung. It becomes too rossinian for me.

It is refreshing to once again hear this magnificent aria and performed by a true artist. I have not heard this aria in decades/

I love Haendel and Joshua is one of my favourite. The voice of Montserrat Caballé is angelic. Great! Thank you for posting it!
