The first time I saw this film, particularly this scene, i went out immediately to buy a bottle of wine, without having any idea of wines, just asking at the Wine shop in the Market about a "Pinot" Wine, obviously there were many of it, i bought an "Undurraga" that despite not be cheap, was the only one i could pay, and the result was exquisite, just like q this scene. Greetings from Colombia
He's talking about himself. I got a big smile when I 1st saw this. He's bad at seducing, he blows his chance for a kiss and them kisses her at the wrong time. This is so revealing about his character. The Pinot is a metaphor for himself. One of my favorite scenes ever. Her explanation shows that she's deep and more thoughtful, where as Miles is wrapped in himself. Hence the Pinot metaphor. The actor may be trying to seduce her, but Miles, the character is not, he thinks he should, but too late.
@RadioUgly extremely well said...a friend of mine strongly recommended that I see this film, asking to pay particular attention to this scene. Perhaps he thought this explained my character as well, who knows? This and the monologue from Ms. Madsen that followed ("if it rained...") are my favorite moments of the film.
Here the actor demonstrates his central assignment: to play an objective. The text, the subject matter, yes, the wondrous Pinot Noir grape. But, BUT, his objective, to woo, to seduce, to express his passion to the woman. It is all there, in his behavior, in his eyes, in his voice. Great great acting.
Thanks for posting this. Classic scene.

Love this scene, so meaningful, but I wish you kept her explanation of her love for wine too

beautifully written piece of script - pity it was stooped short as her response to that monologue was pretty amazing too...
