The US supported Saddam's regime for decades before the first gulf war because he opposed Iran. We sold him much of the chemical weapons that he used to practice genocide on the Kurds. The US refused to depose Saddam in the first Gulf War saying that it would create an unwinnable quagmire in the Middle East and that we are not into nation-building.
