Did you know that over 70% of the water dropped on an average fire from the safe height in dry conditions will evaporate before in reaches the ground? WASTE of time and money if you ask me.
Which is the reason to use retardant or suppressant rather than just water so that most, if not all, of it makes it into the heart of the fire. This is where gel fire suppressants excel. If you notice, the 747 drops red retardant. If USFS would switch over to dropping gelled water, they could kill a fire with 20,000 gallon drops!
@mvallin Y vos crees que es solo agua lo que tiran en el incendio?
acaso no sabes que le colocan un aditivo a la masa liquida para evitar la evaporación del agua....GENIO....te crees que lo sabes todo y ni sabes de lo que hablas!
I pray it doesn't slam into a mountain. It's great that it holds so much water or retardant, but I'm afraid it's not agile enough to do the job. (I hope I'm wrong).
I'm not, so long as I don't have to fly in one of these while it's dropping borate. I watched a fire fighting aircraft fold up like it was made of balsa wood and plunge to the ground, so you'll excuse me if I worry for the pilot's safety. And I'm not talking about a CL-415. I'm talking about a 747.
well I will say this much. I am pretty confident that the 747 will be able to fill this niche HOWEVER! I have worked on wide bodies, doing the anti fatigue work to extend their lives. The work done that I saw was top shelf, but you have to remember that aluminum flexes all the time during flight on every flight and sooner or later, it cracks. Many of these 747s are older than the pilots flying them! This is truth!
yeah im about 2 few miles from the running springs fire here in highland/sanbernardino
the hill behind my house is glowing red and half my neighbors have left , and this plane is about 4 miles from my house sitting in a hanger !! get this thing going already !!!
USFS is sitting on their butts, Texas is burning and The planes are sitting still at home.

That's all very well, but I'd like to see you skim that over the surface of the local lake to refill the tanks...

lol why dont they turn antonov 225 into firefighter tanker!

@marcher47 Or using smaller plane like CL415 to drop more water (don't need to reload on airport)from a lower altitude...

you are wrong!

What are you talking about Jeff?

you said that you hoped you were wrong about it not being agile enough.
I was saying that you are wrong, because it IS agile enough!

Well, I certainly hope you are right!!

hey what the new 747 cannot do, the CL-415s from Canadair will be ale to. It's all going to be all right. Stop living your life in FEAR.

that was a near 40 year old C-130H, with crap maintainence.
Dragonx0562 2 years ago
Do you mean the plane that fell apart in mid-air was a poorly maintained C-130?
Odonataman 2 years ago
yeah, sorry for being vague.
Dragonx0562 2 years ago
H models are not that old
sarcoed 2 years ago
I may have been off, but still the point is the same a C-130 series unit, with bad maintainence, and heavy structural fatigue

The DC-10 is flying, but the 747 had technical problems which they are working on overcoming at the moment. They hope to try again this May.
