If you thought that whistle sounded good then check out the whistle on the video thats titled #70 rounds a curve at Dollywood. It'l send chills down your spine.
#192's bark has been muffled a bit with all the modifications they have made to catch cinders. #190 is still set up very similar to the original design. Also #190 struggles a little more than Dolly's engine where we take off on a 4% grade at the hold up and go in right into a 5%.
#192's bark is different now too. Her stack talk isn't as sharp sounding as it use to be...if you watch an older video of the engine and compare it to a more recent one you can notice a difference.
#190 at Tweetsie still has the sharp sound though - sounds like shotgun blasts!
Maybe. But, she probably had no choice seeing as they were already there when she got the park. But she must love them because they are restoring another one as we speak, #71.
No preference here...Well let me change that I prefer to see them both doubleheading. Wouldn't that be something.Dollywood Railfan Day......Anyway, The Southern Whistle will return and so will 192. And That's all good news...Dollywood is a magical place. ...Excellant place. I saw 192 the other day...She's pulled into the shop. And LOOKING GOOD!!! Hang in there 192 lovers out there.
An all day and into the evening doubleheader would be incredibly AWESOME!!!!!! lovetoseesteam
Hey cut me some slack I havent been to dollywood since I was 3or4 and I'm 17 but hey I 'm a sucker for any good sounding whistle and as am listining to it it's not bad actually I like the new tygart flyer my self but it's diesel but it's still a pretty cool train
Oh of course, I'm just saying the Southern step top sounds the best on Dolly's 2-8-2's. I love the #192, in fact, I had my first cab ride in her, but, I am glad #70 is out and about now as, before April 2007, I had not seen her operating since I was in the 5th grade, about 5 or 6 years ago.
I actually prefer #192 as well. I remember her there as a kid back before they had restored 70, so I guess that's why I enjoy seeing her run more. (Of course, "Cinderella" is an awesome locomotive though - the White Pass fans have every right to be jealous of us down here in the south!)
Really hope they put the 3-chime step top back on someday, it is my all-time favorite whistle. I'm thrilled to read that Dollywood still has it - I thought they might have sold it or something.
nah they tend to rotate them.....which ever engine runs for christmas tends to be the one that is getting heavy maintence in the spring/summer. When both are running they tend to run them about 6 weeks at a time. I just cant wait til 71 gets completed then there will be 3 engines running there!
just wondering if you know if dollywood is still going to restore engine 71. I have heard from some of the crew that they don't intend on restoring 71
Yes, I am glad they sold it. The Southern 3 chime is by far the best. I hope they put it back on #192 next season, or even #70 before this season is out.
I agree with holtskee, the 3 chimes work much better on the Mikes than the heartless NYC 4 chime they have been using recently. The 3 chimes are much more musicall and sound much better echoing off the mountains. Besides, Tennessee is a Southern state, what are they doing using a "Yankee" whsitle? LOL.
I hated that whistle in the video.....but from what i was told they sold it to the first sucker that came along. The best whistle they got is the 3 chime southern step top which is normally on 192
Man i love how that whistle sounds on the video around 2:57,sooooooooo haunting,God I Love IT!!!!.:-)

The only thing that I don't like about this whistle is that high pitch note when its blown at full blast. Other than that, its golden.

I do miss #192's old whistle, but I'm really just glad that #70 and #192 are out of that hokey paint scheme and have lost the diamond stacks.

Me too, I hated those diamond stacks.

Still restoring her!?! They've had her since the 70's! (Got her the exact same time they got 70.)

This video is awesome! Klondike Katie is just beautiful! Her whistle sounds like it's playin' a sad country song.

Well, I'm, sorry, but you must not have heard the 3-chime on the Dollywood Mikes. That is by far the best whsitle I have ever heard.

I do too. They did put the whistle back on #192 for a few weeks back in 2005. Shame I didn't get to hear it.

do you know wheter or not they are restoring engine 71. I have heard from a source that they are not going to restore engine 71.

I'm just the opposite. I prefer the 70 over the 192. I thought they swutched engines each season and kept them in service throughout the season?

i heard from a very good source that 192 should be up and running by the first of august. I hope so I prefer 192 over the 70.

Wonderful video of #192. The Dollywood locomotives always put on a good show climbing out of the depot area.
Don't like that whistle much though...I prefer the 3-chimes they use most of the time.
