Also in the manga it is stated that Itachi was going easy on Sasuke and that he(Sasuke) was no where near as strong as his older brother. Throughout that entire battle you could see how sloppy Itachi was fighting. All of the attacks that actually hit him could of been easily dodged or blocked by him...even without use of the M.S.

Let me set this straight. To start off Itachi had some sort of sickness that resembled that of Kimimaru's. He also took medicine to keep himself alive. As soon as he thought that Sasuke had obtained the MS[Mangekyo] and gotten stronger he chose to end his life in order to have Sasuke return to Konoha and be seen as a hero. For this to happen he had to stop taking the medicines and make Sasuke believe he killed him fair and square. Tobi/Madara screwed this plan up by informing Sasuke of it.
