Well, if your good enough in a band you can tell the diff, of each band wther if it is metal or not.. Im a drummer and I really love Sirenia above all those bands on your vid. For example: Sirenia - Lost in LIfe Sirenia - The other side.. Sirenia - The path to decay.. so awesome.. I even love this band more than evanescence thyre just amazing and unique.. My view of goth is the older goth the original goth.
For a band to be classified under the original term goth their music generally: Used harmonizing vocals, a lot of acoustic instruments, tribal drum beats, and predominant bass lines.
Thus most of the bands out there today that claim to be goth don't fit the genre at all and are going along with this genre that they aren't even in.

Well I used to sort of like Type O, than I learned what real goth is and it's as if they are completely making a mockery of it.
It might fall in somewhere with the new goth (Which again I have to say has nothing to do with real goth) but hardly if anything.
Their style is more metal (from the looks of it), and the vocals aren't harmonizing whatsoever (he has a slow deep voice), and the bass lines aren't dominating. Even their drums aren't every tribal.

Every time I get on a goth music video from Youtube Theres always some stupid arguement about "What real goth music" or " Whats goth and whats not goth" or "Where goth came from" Why is the scene so complex that it makes everybody in the scene fall into a big dispute? @birinbirinbirin I wouldn't call Deadsy a Goth knockoff, they don't actually try to play Goth rock (although a few of their songs are a bit Darkwave-influenced) but they look a bit Goth and therefore are labeled as such, the rest of the bands I don't know.

The more I observe the classic goth bands like Bauhaus and Siouxsie, I realize that "goth" as a musical genre doesn't exactly exist, its usually the elements of the lyrical content, atmosphere and look of the band. In fact, looks play a very large part of it, and so do the interests expressed int eh lyrics, because none of the original goth and post punk bands sound very alike. In my opinion, goth is an evolving, yet very clandestine subculture;

Labels are pointless, however, sometimes people will use labels to find identity and identify with others. I personally don't take the term "goth" too seriously, but it will enter my vocabulary when I have no other way to describe someone of the subculture. I agree with you on the point that many subcultures are dead. The media has butchered most with unflattering stereotypes.

I didn't have many problems with the vid. I think you should've stuck with more origional bands but I suppose that's not a big deal really. BUT then you showed CombiChrist. CombiChrist is NOT goth/gothic. Have you seen their merchandise even? CombiChrist merchandise even says "I HATE GOTH" on it. Go look for one of their shirts I'm sure you'll find it. But other than that, no problems.

My view of goth is the older goth the original goth.
For a band to be classified under the original term goth their music generally: Used harmonizing vocals, a lot of acoustic instruments, tribal drum beats, and predominant bass lines.
Thus most of the bands out there today that claim to be goth don't fit the genre at all and are going along with this genre that they aren't even in.
HIM is love metal (they even claim the title themselves).
And Type O? Maybe a wanna be goth parody?

Well I used to sort of like Type O, than I learned what real goth is and it's as if they are completely making a mockery of it.
It might fall in somewhere with the new goth (Which again I have to say has nothing to do with real goth) but hardly if anything.
Their style is more metal (from the looks of it), and the vocals aren't harmonizing whatsoever (he has a slow deep voice), and the bass lines aren't dominating. Even their drums aren't every tribal.
But I don't make the rules for genres

And yeah there's a huge difference.
Out of that list I'd say Clan Of Xymox, and Christian Death fit the genre goth better than any of the others.

Look I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Deadstar Assembly (I used to listen to them, as well as a lot of other industrial bands).
All I'm saying is that they're not goth. They are industrial or industrial metal.
Not goth. Their style might be goth (though even that by the looks of it is more industrial as well), but their music is not goth.
Goths might listen to it, but that doesn't make them a goth band.
