  • Oh my god! That is scarey! A ginger at THIS time of day!

  • Very detail work, a bit uncanny sometimes, but seems a lot of good work here

  • i fell into the uncanny valley and now my vertexes are bleeding

  • very nice work

  • If it looks directly to the camera it creeps me out so, so much ;_;

  • it's so damn realistic that makes me think that it's your real face

  • The animation work is fantastic, but this is irrefutable proof that we are still deep, deep in the uncanny valley here. The very slight un-human-ness is unbelievably unsettling. I have the heebie-jeebies, big time.

  • amazing reality, maybe it is from 2008 but still fucking good

  • what was the render time for this?

  • Holy shit.

  • Very well done sir.

  • FEAR. THERE IS ONLY FEAR. THERE IS NO GOD.

  • Something I've noticed: eye movements that are too smooth or focus too consistently on the same spot can trigger the uncanny valley response really easily (see Emily). Part of why this looks so good is the realistic jerky eye movement.

  • This is for me one of the best face tests because you've gone for a regular human (apart from the slightly odd hair cut) and regular human movements. not over the top looks or movements. The eyes themselves look exceptionally real! the rest of the render may not be perfectly photo real but that doesn't matter because we know that could be perfected and all the natural movement makes you head believe in it. good job

  • Nice Vid!

If you search great free textures google for: textureblog

  • Why do you keep filming people's faces up close? Oh wait...

No, in all seriousness this is some mind blowing stuff man. Pixar couldn't top this.

  • Youre animation skills are mocap level...

  • Awesome eye animation!!

  • very nice !!!!!

  • Horor movies will be amazing with cgi :D

  • cgi too close to realism has that "look to it" you know? it makes things look creepy, or defromed, it doesn't matter how good the cgi is i feel it will always have that "look" so long as its fake.

  • @mrboxleytheonly I agree... When looking at yourself in the mirror you will see all the "defects" that are there and the fact that the face isnt equaly mirrored like this fellow. Im not talking about the fascial texture but the polygons that builds the face from within. If they are exactly the same from left to right, the face starts to look perfect in a way that our "human eyes" starts to look for deformation and when we cant find them we they start too have that "look to it"..

  • impressive. exaggerated features, yet realistically portrayed.

  • im scared...

  • THIS man is bitch!!this man is bitch,!! i am uzbek soccer boy

  • liam kemp's eye

    inside

  • :O That looks amazingly close to real life!

  • wow i thought i was a real guy, then i thought it was animation, im a little scared and feel ashamed, i dont no how im going to sleep at night now knowing he's not a real person with no chance of real life, looks CAN be decieving, and ive been deceived!

  • I don't know. It's very impressive, but you've succeeded in making a CGI image look like a pretty good practical effect from the late 80s. It looks like a real FAKE head, like Rob Bottin's work on TOTAL RECALL. And definitely deep in the uncanny valley.

  • oh...f**k........ that is perfect.

  • really impresive

  • could you make me if i send you photo of me

  • So superb. Any chance of a look at the rig?

  • wait, wait. this is cg? D:

  • How did you did the facial capture?

  • This on the other hand I do love! :)

  • i dont believe this, if it is true its scary. but u most have a lot of skills

  • 3 big problems:

    1. the lifeless, blank eyes

    2. the head turns, which are just a little too stiff

    3. the enormous mouth that looks like it's about it eat me

  • haha this looks exactly like my friend eric

  • amazing work.

  • it's so scary how reeeaaaal he looks, his skin, the detail, is simply perfect!

  • This is awesome. :D

  • This is freaky looking O_O Nice JOb !

  • Nice to see people trying to create interesting looking animated characters now and not just your regular no-personality plastic model girls.

  • extraordinary work dude! ive worked with lightwave for awhile and cannot come close to this kind of detail. I hope you get many contracts in your future! :)

  • This is by far the most impressive facial animation I have ever seen!

But it might also be the best example of a the term 'uncanny valley' - so disturbing to look at that I almost had to look away at times.

  • Wow great stuff there, I have got into studying the human face lately in the studio I work in, the face always requires special attention as its what the audience tune in and relate to, especially the eyes. You've done a great job with the lids moving with the eyeballs, engaging. Great work mate!!!

  • i thought it was a real life robot before i read it was computer generated... that is amazing

  • there were times i had to remind myself what i was looking at wasn't real

  • Stunning on every level.

  • OMG!!! This is bleeping Brilliant, Christ Man it's so natural... Awesome Man, Awesome...

  • if they ever make games looking this gud.. Meh will never happen anyway, kids with shitty computers would whine because they couldnt play the game.

  • almost scary...

  • Fantastic work. There's so many fatty, muscly, wrinkly minute parts on a human face and you captured all of them spot on.

  • Liam, did you use face robot?

  • Wow! Woah! That is no less than *beep*ing amazing! When watching, I had to keep reminding myself that I'm watching a CGI-rendition and not just some young guy moving his head around, especially in the close up shots!

Wow! Someone out in Hollywood and/or the video-game industry needs to give you a job, paying you the big bucks! They're stupid if they don't.

    That is so awesome!

  • Dude aaaaaaAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH OH GOD

    AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • It's just realistic enough for those eyes to be terrifying as hell.

  • Very good, but it is unnerving when "he" looks at the "camera"!

  • Absolutely fantastic. WOW!

  • What software you used for making it.

  • @SunnyShawFilms

I use 3DS Max and Brazil for rendering

  • this is 3d!! awesome

  • that must be one hell of a rig there

  • Can you do somthing to make thei EYES look like they actually have something down there or not ? This is the only trick needed to make them look alive >]

  • holy shit! this is amazing! very nice!

  • Jesus, he is away down in the uncanny valley. I'm scarred!

  • Wow that's nicely done. Everything including the eye movements are nearly perfected. It seems like a person trying to be a robot than the other way around.

  • You should have spent more time on the lighting, texturing and material rigging. Then it would have been way out of the uncanny valley.

  • its amazing man! =) you rock ))

  • I can feel the bottom of the uncanny valley here :P

  • This really is some of the best 3d work/animation I've ever seen.

  • when he opened his mouth the realism ended for me D:

  • OMRFG! AWSUM!

  • Zajebiste.Praktycznie wygląda jak prawdziwy tylko jeszcze w oczach trochę widać,że są nieludzkie.Ale za 2 lata chyba już nie odróżni się różnicy pomiędzy prawdziwym człowiekiem a animacją.

  • ...and you do this for FREE?!? WTF?

You should be making video games or CGI movies or someting. I really,REALLY hope you get discovered dude. Best of Luck.

  • He looks a bit like Ed Norton :p

  • at 0:46 his teeth bend - realism removed

  • Dude.. It looks incredible! Do you do 'real' movie 3D-effects as well (like making a helicopter that explodes in a real scene), or do you only do full-3D animations?

  • great rendering but still a bit uncanny imo

  • Damn !

  • do u have a wireframe...the shader, textures and SSS are amazing. what was this rendered with?

  • wow, looks like you're starting to climb the slope of the uncanny valley with this one!

  • So inspirational. I even looked closely at some of your pictures on your site and you make everything look so realistic. I know I will hear more of you.

  • scary so real

  • love the eyeballs

  • very very good!!! the eyes are the hardest part to get... I still think that they are lacking and I think that all art, including animation will always lack a bit in copying emotion as portrayed by the eyes... but this is excellent

  • Crikey that's some of the best CGI I've seen. The only thing that gave it away was the inside of the mouth, just not dark enough given the available light.

Very commendable, a brilliant result from some obvious long hours. The eye movement was absolutely spot on.

  • Wow. I was reading about this online so I thought I would check it out. Great work. I have been experimenting with 3d for some time know and I have such an appreciation for things like this. Great work.

  • AAAAAwwwwsome!

  • Lost my words here! 100 000 stars! Just like real guy would be.

  • Terrifying! It's absolutely perfect. Looks incredibly organic.

  • insane!! O_O

  • Can remember waiting over 2 hours to download your "This wonderful life" way back in 2003 with modem connection :) Love it. And how many controls do he have?

Is most of the deformation automatic?

  • Niiice!

  • brill

  • lol awesome. this looks so real.

this looks like a guy trying to look a bit cg and not some cg model trying to look realistic..

  • OMG I TOUGHT IT WAS AN REAL ''OLD'' GUY

  • thats INSANE!! how long did the rigging on this one take? :O really nice job, all i'd recommend is maybe lessening the texture map around the cheek, because it looks like hes had some epic acne in the past or something lol

  • @stonereflex The facial system took around 8 months full-time.

  • @lkcgartist 8 months!.... holy shit.. lol. Even still, this is the best facial animation/human animation I've ever seen, period.

  • @lkcgartist 8 Months, that's an awful amount of time for a single rig.

  • @stonereflex i think he's going for that kind of realism. i love the facial marks

  • The eyes are remarkable!

  • Man, i was already so impressed with the 3d girl back in the day, but this is just wicked !

I'd really like to see what kind of rig you've done for that, because the result is just jaw dropping :)

  • es uno de los mejores trabajos q eh visto

  • Realy cool-Avatar is more than a few steps ahead from this.

  • The eyes are pretty amazing. Great job :)

  • most realistic face test I've ever seen O_o

  • amazing

  • even better than final fantasy :D

  • awesome how realistic this is!!

  • The eyes are great. One step out of the valley.

  • Liam Kemp, this is outstanding work! Really amazing! You are a master.

Are you working in feature films?

    If not you should...

I agree that after two years this is still the most accurate, realistic, CG rigging I've ever seen.

I'd like to ask you a few questions. How can I contact you?

  • It looked so real at first! Amazing!

  • @airun71

You're welcome to contact me either through Youtube, or emailing me from liamkemp.com

  • @lkcgartist

sorry but why i cant see this animations in Hollywood Film.

Dont be Angry but i think this is a fake, real person with a filter or something.

  • @supermariojackson this is why it is so good, if it's real, but it certainly is (i mean, real 3D animation), look closely, this thing is not human.

  • @mmn857

    This is crazy

Ok i believe you and i wish i could play a videogame from the year 2057 :)

  • Almost out of the uncanny valley! =D

  • I hope 'Tintin' is going to live up to this standard. It's the most impressive indepedent facial rigging I've seen, still unbeaten two years later. The only things as good as this are Benjamin Button and Avatar.

  • that's insane. how long did it take to render? how long do you reckon it'll be until you finish the normals?

  • This has found the exact lowest point in the uncanny valley. Spooky. Very cool.

  • @tapeshaft NAW, he reached the other peak of the uncanny valley - it's 10+ on the coolness factor!

(you're in the valley when humans get turned off by the creepiness)

  • Ok that was just totally freaky/eerie good! Crap and it was posted in 08 so there's no telling how it looks now!! OMG!

  • The ultra realistic animations and live camera movement just push this over the edge. Fantastic work!

  • Im new to 3D world, but i planing to start learn this, im good with hand draw and i got decent criative mind, but i dont know what programs a need to look, to reach near ur skill level, and what computer i must use? Can u tell us please? By the way IMPRESSIVE work!

  • WTF!!.wat planet do u people come from??..how do u do this!!

  • Did you use facial tracking?

  • No, the animation was created without any references

  • That's absolutely perfect !

  • impossible.

  • o.o holy...

    awesomeful

  • holy mackerel

  • wow that's excellent work! with 3ds max can you post the rig? thanks..hope to see the rig soon I'm dying to see it..

  • @erickaustria me too!

  • Very fucking impressive.

  • You da man Liam! Hope you'll be joining us in London for some digital character fun.

  • The best thing about the animation are the eyes. It's the micro-movements that the human eye involuntarily has that make a whole lot of difference when it comes to realism.

BUT, this kind of technique and attention to detail would never make it to, let's say, the big screen. Why? Because it takes a VERY long time to animate something that people would only notice for 3 or 4 seconds. When animating on a big project, it's best to keep things tight and easy, no unnecessary details.

  • Does anyone know you exist? You are a pure genius and artist with an attention to detail that is microscopic!

  • @TheLivingDeadOne PPL know about him, i did know about his 3d works from an Italian CG magazine and it was long time ago, now is a pleasure to see he didn't quit, i did.. but i didn't had his skill lol

Congrats Liam, keep it up this amazing job.

  • thats actually just amazing, what programe was this developed in? 3ds max? maya?

  • I use 3DS Max with Brazil for rendering

  • this is the work of pure genius, it's still slightly uncanny but I've never seen anything quite as skillful - post something better if you find it

  • Wooooow. If it weren't for that not-quite-right shading that computers always do with human skin, he'd be pretty much indistinguishable from a human being.

  • this is awsomee

  • They should make a horror film based on the uncanney vally would be realy cool

  • Someone needs to throw this thing down into the uncanny valley where it belongs.

  • i am in the valley! repeat! i am down in the valley! creepy

  • I was waiting for it to start singing "Is She Really Going Out With HIim?".

  • I don't think you can fake the uncanny valley.

  • FAIL!!!

  • 0:49- 0:51 The most realistic moment in the video

  • The lips are the real bitch, there's just not enough deformation when they do things. That's pretty much the biggest problem when representing any human form digitally, getting the deformation right.

  • the eyeball part was awesome, my goal in 3d rendering is too become like him, he's rly good

  • Very realistic control point mapping. It's all the extra imperfections that lift this out of the valley -- moles, bad skin, overbite, wrinkles, balding... and he looks like a mouth breather. Well done.

  • omg :O

  • wow respect!

  • you are soooo goooooooooooood

  • uncanny

  • Идите на хуй!

  • cool

  • It's creepy seeing something fake come alive. 5 stars.

  • Pretty nice... not that many things actually looked off with this clip.

  • That guy wasn't real?

  • BLoody AMAZING!!!!!!

  • hes eyes are not realistic...

  • Amazing. It's realistic enough not to look creepy.

  • oh and give him nostrils lol

  • Nice, get someone to work on the skin tone/teeth/lips and texturing and that would fool alot more people than alot current stuff does. also the chin/jaw movements are to static when holding an expression should be little movements or flexes when holding an expression. But as for eyes expression, the most real i have seen so far.

  • wow, you can only hardly tell thats CG :O

  • That's pretty fucking amazing.

  • What the hell does "the uncanny valley" mean?

  • damn who do you work for? you should work for some video game company or movie company

  • he probably do, you know...

  • i'v seen that once! truly amazing work. pots motion capture to shame hehehe

  • Finally somebody understood eye movement! The eyes are so real - makes it look like a real person under heavy makeup.

  • Eyes are the windows to the soul, you get the eyes right and you're 60% off the uncanny valley. Liam Kemp's rigging is incredibly impressive but the eyes are indeed the most impressive part!

  • Uncanny Valley taken to its max. Makes me feel intuitively very disturbed about something.

  • wow this is awesome.. but why did you make him so ugly though??
