It is really mesmerizing, and a little bit otherworldly, to see such a young and cute Chris...How time flies and how people changeI wish they have never grown old. Anyway very decent, very talented, hard-working, self-aware, humble musicians...although they are gay, they are much more "men" than many straight men.
Thank God I have grown up with them. They made our world colorful without being flamboyant, and defined shadier parts better without going maudlin. One of the best bands all time.
I see there's an advertisement with this video for Nelly (whovever that is). Whoever Nelly is, I hope he agrees with me that we better do what we can to get President Obama elected again. We may laugh now at these clowns of the Republican candidates. It sure won't be funny if one of them actually gets elected.
This song satirises the American dream and yuppie culture of the time, socially I'm sure people were offended while privately they wanted a piece of it. But in reality Pet Shop Boys were just being sarcastic.
@drewgoloid I don't think a British band were thinking about the American dream at all, it isn't American specific :-)......but I agree with what you're saying if not the word choice ....Anyway: The thing about 80's bands is they were actually 'underground' ...good music in the 80's was popular because we listened to it , sought it out and the bands had talent, they weren't manufactured that's a 90's thing, and most of it was about saying FU to the baby boomers greed, and consumer capitalism
@gadgetory I always though this song was about Thatcher's Britain, and people like Pete Waterman who used people like Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to get rich.
When I bought Please, I had never seen any videos of its singles. This song had such a great impact on me that I used to imagine a video where gorgeous blonds and shaggy males would waltz down in a venue which changed from a run-of-the mill lecture hall to a magnificient Las Vegas casino, all changing from pure innocents to money-blanketed monsters as the song culminated into one of the best-ever choruses of all time at the end. I still play it on my mind when I listen to it...
@scotter420wigb Scotter: Yes, he was indeed! His father, Ron, produced this song. They were in the music business before venturing into politics. BTW-The Patroits were a much better team than the Packers. They went 14-2. You can not argue with that! FND, Bedford, NH
@turlough06 I agree about that, it is a parody. However, the PSB probably did not give away all of their profits to charity. Ironic? Yes. Great song? Yes!
Some people have no brains, no intellect, and still make the money but no happiness. No amount of money could buy joy, forget the education, the crime, the knowledge, when that is all GARBAGE fitlh in the sink....
There is one Joy and that is GOD number one.
If you sell your soul to the devil, well hell no pun intended here hell give you hell and then some--and a black soul to toot.
Betteroffsingle, I disagree with your statement: "...As for the music, no one buys it anymore, which destroyed incentives to create it.." Coldplay is essentially continuing the 80's genre, and they're quite successful at it, but most music companies don't have to work that hard to make a quick buck, and so manufactured musicians predominate instead of the ones with actual talent. They even tried to make a singer out of Hulk Hogan's daughter -ehehehe!

This should be the hymn of the actual youtube, with little changes:
I've got VEVO, you've got youtube
Let's make lots of money
You've got the channel, I've got the WMG
Let's make lots of -
I've had enough of scheming and messing around with trolls
My channel is parked outside, I'm afraid it doesn't work
I'm looking for a partner, someone who gets things changed
Ask yourself this question: Do you(tube) want to be rich?
Fix the rest.

Money doesn't buy happiness has to be one of the biggest fallacies of all time.
It is also erroneous to use happiness as a blanket term. There are different kinds of happiness - Material, Spiritual, Social etc etc.
Like most things in life it is not guaranteed, but money can and does bring happiness to many of those who have it.
