The singer (Phoebe Snow) is actually pretty talented; the problem is that her singing style totally doesn't match the backing track. If they had rearranged the backing track so it just didn't copy the original, the intro would have fine.
The singer of the intro was horrible. Sounds like she was fighting a speech problem while singing. And how the heck many shows has Jeffrey Tambor been in? The man has been everywhere!
there were some shows that were spunoff from successful movies such as:PRIVATE BENJAMIN, FOUL PLAY, HARPER VALLEY PTA, and 9 to 5, that didn't last very long
You may have thought the show was mediocre, but it did quite well in its first two ABC seasons, and I'd imagine it did fairly well in its first syndicated year to be picked up for another. The only hit the show truly suffered was when James Komack revamped the show for the third season, following the departure of Jane Fonda and Bruce Gilbert as executive producers. The show was quickly dropped into that season, and was off the air for three years until the syndication run began in '86.
In total, it actually ran for five seasons; three on ABC and two in first-run syndication. It premiered as a mid-season replacement in March 1982, and was renewed twice thereafter. However, only five episodes into its third season, despite having a standard full-season renewal, ABC pulled the plug on 9 to 5; a massive revamp in the cast and setting that fall had caused an instant drop in the ratings. The series was revived for first-run syndication, and ran two additional seasons (1986-88).
It's amazing that Jean Marsh (best known as Rose from Upstairs Downstairs) was in this too. She played Roz; the girls' nemesis. A far cry from the house parlormaid as anything.
@rubino83 I thought they were cousins, not sisters. I was a very young kid when this was on the air and I thought I remembered them promoting her as Dolly's cousin. Wouldn't be the first time I remembered something inaccurately.
@Lotmeister Nope, Rachel Dennison (nee Parton) was Dolly's sister and the youngest of the Parton children. I believe there was a 13 or 14 year age difference between the two.
Jeffery Tambor is all over the television of this period. Wow.

Phoebe Snow was very talented; it's a shame that her death last April after a year-long coma wasn't blown up to a higher proportion. RIP.

As I pointed out below, 9 to 5 lasted five seasons in total. Not bad considering the rate of movie-inspired series.

@VaultMasterDBT how did this piece of junk of show last 5 seasons? one terrible show and a disgrace to its movie.

I don't know why, but I much prefer this version of the theme song to Dolly's version.

this was a great short lived series

Five seasons in total wouldn't quite make this short lived. ;)

The late Phoebe Snow sings this version of the theme, which was used in the first season.

@mbsjrcc06 I thought it was country singer Lacy J. Dalton until I saw your comment.

Well she should probably look like Dolly. They're sisters if I remember right.

@rubino83 Yes, they are. Rachel's the youngest of the family. Dolly and she are very close. :D
