This song is simply beautiful; period: No arguments. Madness are and will always remain one of the best acts who ever graced this planet. About their videos; no one today gets even close to what they've done in terms of ideas, originality, genius and good taste. Whoever thinks of them as comical (yes, they know how to do that as well) should simply SHUT UP, listen, watch and learn.
This is like...the most honest and pure example of artistic expression I've seen lately. Obviously the song actually means something to the guy singing it, and what amazing musical talent from the entire band. It's spot fucking on.
What I like about Madness is that they had a mixture of pop, rock, jazz, blues. The horn section was brilliant. They have their followers....One Step Beyond was a great video...as well the entire album. You're right he does remind me of Biff...lol
Madness were always very popular but they were quite underappreciated as musicians in an era of 'serious' bands like The Clash, The Jam and The Smiths - but it takes a hellavalot lot of talent to make a song this good.
I just lovd the whole ska revival, Black orientated music with White/Black guys playing it together. Was the first kind of musical unity that reflected the school life that I knew
As a black youth known as 2tonetrev at the time, I loved this group of guys. A lot of my black mates told me that Madness were a racist skinhead group. What they did not understand was that it was the skinheads of the 60's that promoted ska music, hence, Bring Back the Prince (Buster) who had most of his records recorded at Orange Street in Jamaica..
@masterofscotland I don't take em seriously, they're a great laugh and cheer me up all the time. I'm sorry that I don't put on a sombre up like at a rememberance parade and act like I'm at a Beethoven recital. Mate, fuck you instead.
@masterofscotland yep fuck em if i had a time machine i couldent get more real than what this tune brings to mind me best years and a soulfull tune to :)
This song is different to the version on 'Total Madness' - on this version, the organ starts straight away from the beginning of the sax solos, but on the CD version it starts later.
A nice story. One of the band members' had a baby with a negro. The family disowned the mother and baby at first, but actually in the end accepted them into the family.
2 negative marks for saying something that is true,,one of the band had a sister who had a child with a coloured gent and as a result she was disowned for a while
This song is about one of the band members' (he wrote the song obviously) teen sisters getting pregnant with a black man's kid. The whole family shunned her, but when little Hayley was born the family reconciled.
It's based on one of the members of Madness' sister getting pregnant by a black man - back then it was disgraceful, due to the attitudes of the time. However, the story has a happy ending :) the family accepted it and welcomed in the new child (called Hayley) with open arms :D
pure class is there another band that gives as much pleasure to listen to any of there tracks as much as madness? .......i think not, long may they keep touring,if you have never seen them make the effort you wont be sorry that you went....fantastic
I think it was more to do with the fact that the father of the baby was black and he family were racist. They rejected her for having a black man's baby.
There was still a lot of rubbish.. Madness 's era was quite short but the whole two tone thing was great... You can't keep looking back, I always wanted to be a child of the late fifties so I could be into the rising blues scene of the mid sixties!!
If the truth be known, this song was based on Lee's sister Tracey, who at the time was publicly disgraced for having a mixed race baby.
