I want to know about DC motors, their cost to buy, wher/how to buy, and horsepower ratings at certain voltages. I want to build a toyota pickup truck into an electric offroader.
you have an amazing car, i have only just found your video's. thing is when you said about polution... how is electric produced in aussie land? im not trying to be funny but its created by fossil fuels in the uk... pollution
Why don't we all drive these? I'd love to convert my car. Do you charge on you regular house service? Here in Canada, we have 110v for most, and 220v for the stove and clothes dryer. I'd convert if I had the money, but then again, it seems like an investment...
Very nice. I would love to build an electric car myself but I don't think I have ever finished a project I have started ;-( Save that money up and buy LiFePoh?? batteries instead.
There will be a bonus video coming out soon, but first I'm going to offer the whole series (with the bonus video) on DVD for $15 airmailed anywhere.
Once I've sold a few I'll put the bonus video up here - right now the bonus video gives people a reason to buy the DVD for more than just better quality.
The DVD should be available for purchase next week sometime. God knows I need the money! I'm doing the DVD thing because I'm broke and have run out of things to sell!
hey gav, i think i might know why that coupler was moving on you. did u drill dimples into the motor shaft where the screws go in? i read this somewhere online apparently its essential to keep it in place. any ways look forward to seeing updates and congrats on the new home :)
I was just finalizing my list of parts for my Smart ForTwo conversion when I came across some stories that Mitsubishi, Nissan, Smart, and Volvo are looking at releasing fully electric or hybrid models starting in 2010.
If I was back home, I would have gone ahead with the project, but as I only have a small flat here and no garage. I'm going to wait for the car companies to release a good one....I hope I'm not waiting long.
Is your grille open? Cover it with an aluminum sheet. It will keep batteries warmer, but it will also cut aerodynamic drag. Also, make a belly pan of aluminum sheet or plastic, or plywood, for aerodynamics. Just leave a small opening near the firewall for cooling the motor.
the type of regenerative braking use on hybrid cars is only able to charge the battery 10%-15%, so pretty much your going to spend a lot of money on the regenerative breaking and the most your going to get out of them is like 5 more miles per charge, it doesn't worth it.
I can't fix it unfortunately as it's built into the controller.
I should add that it's not actually very loud in person. For some reason that 1.5khz noise really bites into the camera microphone and stands out. In reality it's not bad at all. You'll just have to trust me on that! :)
you have inspired me to have a bash at building an EV fo myself.
great work mate.
would the optima D34 yellow top 55AH AGM batteries be good for EV use ?
i was thinking about a 120 volt system in a daihatsu charade.
initial budget is 10,000 AU$. know it will cost more than that, but it's a great starting point. will be doing most of the work myself, like you did to save money, and learn along the way.
Congrads on the award and the purchase. Ive been searching for a motor suitable for my small car. In Malaysia it is consider stupid for someone to change its petrol car to an electric car. As it has no airconditioning. I am eager to convert my "Perodua - Kenari" into an electric car. Hope I could learn from your experience....
Wow! congrads on the purchase and thanks for keeping us updated! ...When you get to the garage addition to your house... consider usind a "straw bale" style contruction. Do ysome research. It's a great idea!
Thanks folks! Yes the new house needs a lot of work. First we have to save up a couple of grand for the insulation, then it's time to tackle Dear Leader's room (the purple and green bathroom). Ugh...shudder.
A long way down the to-do list is a garage for the Tredia but it'll happen eventually.
Congrats on the savings DeLorean4 you'll be ditching gas real soon (trust me, it feels pretty good!).
Good idea Tetranoob, I like the idea of double -glazing. I'll look into that.
Brilliant video as always! As soon as I have 5000$ saved up for a DC conversion kit I'll get right on to ripping out a petrol engine (or maybe even a little earlier :P).
Why dont you put an Ebay Donation Page, surely lots of people still wants you to still move on with your electric car convertion... Even a little drop in the bucket would certainly help.
good luck in the new house mate! i haven't done much with my ev conversion lately =[ i've put up a wind generator that i built to charge the car if i ever get it finished.thats taken a bit of time and money! just saving the penny's for the 8" motor now! you keep inspiring me mate!
Its a pitty he can't keep the cash in the fuel saving jar, its probably got to go to pay back the two loans he had to get? I don't see how the foam padding works the batteries will still get heat loss from the top?

Question bout the solar panels, don't they need 2 b 160 volts ?

How about using your clutch pedal to set some contacts across the motor so it slows it down when you go to shift gears.

That's exactly what happened. Apparently it's pretty common. I've put some dimples in the shaft to stop it happening again.
And thanks! The house is finally warm as we have a heat pump installed.

When I get a garage I'll do something along those lines. And I'll be using a classier car next time for sure.
The Tredia was a "if it works, great - if not, oh well" car for $180.
cant7think7clearly 3 years ago
Next time seek out a classier car, with a seized engine, or cracked block, etc.

Yeah, I only did a little one as tyres cost a lot. There are some impressive e-burnouts on youtube though.
When it's wet the Tredia spins effortlessly in second gear and I have to gentle with the "gas" pedal in the rain. Well, sometimes. ;)
Bnz500: It was actually 1609km (1000 miles) but you can't see the "1" on that classic 80's dashboard.
