From the two wrongs don't make a right department, the Dolphin guy WAS pretty much using the sideline to get down field. Notice the relatively new rule about getting back onto the field as soon as possible that they have put in? Still a low grade move, but it did serve an overall purpose in the end. Punt coverage guys can't just skate untouched down the out of bounds area anymore.

Actually I saw this game live. The guy who was the Jets Strength and Conditioning coach at the time, Sal Alosi, was the one who stuck out his knee and intentionally tripped Nolan Carroll.
