Due to climatic changes within the last 20 years or so and really within the last 10, swell patterns and angles have changed drastically here in California most notably in So. Cal. Winter surf considered by many as the best season has dwindled down to almost non existant due to changes in the jet stream. Storm patterns that would nomally "drop down" from the north are tracking high and due east. Therefore the days of really good surf in California are all but dead.
This isn't some dark, smokey bar room, or the "bitter sweet" parting of lovers in some dumb European movie, this is f#cking RINCON bro! Get it together.
@sskaustralia hahaha maybe he should play some gnarly head banging tubular barrel music braski! Great song with the video man, dont listen to this gnarly shredder braski!
I LOVE that you've combined actual music with surfing. Really, if surfers had music like this in their heads they'd cut way down on jerkey wasted superficial motions.
@zorrokun it looks like this difference between what appears semi expert and pro is smaller now. d7000 is all many of us want. visit... freedslr dot com change dot with . and try to get an opportunity to bring home completely new Nikon D7000
Very nice shooting brah! Rincon, such a great spot. The smell of the lemon flowers as you walk down the path mixed with smoke from beach fires. But still too damn crowded now and hectic for me I'm an old man. Very stylish surfing here on cool equipment - fish boards and single fins. Surfers like George Greenough always experimenting at Rincon. Has always been that way. I started surfing there in '64. Now I live in New Zealand. Reminds me of Dora - who I watched surf Rincon many times. Magic.
@usurftube quite justified, too, i think, and with a poetic sense of adding insult to injury, it being the case that the snakee was on a friggin alaia!!
I like the vid but the music kept me anticipating that a great white is going to come out of nowhere, rape your butt hole, and then eat you. It never happened... so now im confused
Great rez on the 7D but it takes a hi-perf Mac with extra RAM, video RAM and Final Cut pro to make best use of camera's features. BTW, music is great....where'd you find it?
i live in ny but iv been surfing since i was 5 and im now 16 but my sister goes to college at usc and im going out there this feb i wondering if this place has a huge crowd factor and are they jerks about unlocals
@nolifesurfer the crowd is insane on any swell at all. On a very good swell you may want to just sit back and watch, save yourself the embarrassment/ comments when in the lineup.
Lovely from music and montage to feedback and technique sharing. Kudos on vibe. quid pro quo--lens naked? any filters/nd grad? mattebox? noticed in earlier comment no audi captured...have you worked with audio on 7D yet? bout to plunge...wanna be sure...how about handheld? thanks for sharing.
yes, i sold my xh-a1. getting that camera was a mistake in the first place; i've come to learn the panasonic HVX-200 is so far superior in ability, its tragic on Canon's behalf, because i really liked the XH-A1's build quality and ergonomics.
i recommend the 7d but not for all applications. lifestyle work, yes. action, maybe. surfing pushes it. field work with important audio capture - no.
Wow! It's impressive how modern DSLRs can shoot video. I just got the 7D and the same 100-400 L lens. Do you feel it's light enough to carry it on handheld say... on a safari trip?
Canon DSLR's are very susceptible to the elements. i've been shooting stills with NIkon film & digital bodies for the last couple years and they absolutely blow even Canon's newest, most rugged-ized bodies out of the water. i tread a lot more carefully with my 7d than i do my D300 and D700.
several hours of footage, shot over 2 days... probably 12gb on camera. but once the footage was uploaded, i converted it to Apple Prores422 for Final Cut Pro. that about quadruples the file size, to almost 50gb.
@ad10am haha, totally, rincons nasty! so is this video! very nice! Considering getting a 7d. Lens change at 5:06? i like adler, sporting the fish stick! random factor on this comment is high. 20% chance of rain.
Travers Adler's recreation of Dora's moves is an absolute thing of beauty...a match for the courage in music selection - another thing of absolute beauty.
have you had any troubles following the rider with tehe focus? or have you been shooting with a deep DOF so you don't have to worry about the focus as much? the real 7D beauty comes with the shallow DOF!
its hard pulling focus on the 100-400 (which i borrowed from a friend and ultimately decided not to buy) but the 75-300mm is way more ergonomical for pulling focus with surfers.
yew! nice to see what the 7d can do in terms of focus pulling, panning etc. very tidy work. nicely shot & edited too morgan, but no surprises there. a lovely piece, super watchable. congrats mate.
