I don't mean to sound stupid. I don't play field hockey and just started getting in to it. But I do play goalie in dek hockey and a bit of roller hockey, and I watch a lot of ice hockey, and goalies play in a style called butterfly in those. It's when both leg pads are placed horizontally on the ground to stop shots. So, just a simple question lol, do goalies in field hockey ever use butterfly, or is it strictly just standing and diving and what not?
@lumberjack5 yea it's strictly standing up and diving. There is a certain technique used for block-tackles, but it's not advisable if you don't have alot of expirience, since it tends to bust up your knee and/or leg quite bad if you don't know what you're doing.
@lumberjack5 That's in relation to the sizes of the goal. Look at the area a field hockey keeper has to protect, and the area an ice/floor hockey goalie has to. The ice hockey goalie can go into a butterfly and still use his blocker or glove to make an elevated save and cover most of the net, but if a field hockey keeper did the butterfly the entire net would be open. Fh keepers cannot hold ball, it's only meant to be rebounded away that's why they need to constantly be on their feet for shots.
I have been playing goalie for 12 years and this is no how I learned at all. There are some of the basics you need but other wise it is better to learn from a experience goalie.
personally, i really don't like heading the ball. my helmet isn't that fantastic anyways, and i always get somewhat stunned. i would much rather use my hands.
also, i found that kicking the ball came natural for me because i played soccer for years before starting field hockey.
I'm not sure bout trying to tackle like ur out field player that a little too casual. Dnt worry bout saving with ur head i've done intentionally loads of times saved a couple of drag flicks that way lol
wow...this is terrible...to title it "skills" puts chills through my body both as a keeper and a coach...i love that there are videos out there to help young keepers learn, but it worries me that they are learning things such as to tackle rather than slide, and using their head rather than hands??!!
if you have one of the new obo ones (paint splatter style) you actually cannot feel it hit you. i could only tell from the sound it made. also who tackles someone like and outfielder in a one on one?
Well, the consensus is reached. This guy's got some major technique problems. First, letting the ball hit you in the head or chest? Stick tackling like a fieldy instead of sliding the guy away? Some people shouldn't be allowed access to the media..
first of al why french and and english title confussing second some tactics are just not right leg first??? with the ball at the eend line a goali should steand near his post not to it and he should stand with split vison not just so if the ball gets passes around him hes already there to get it instead of having to turn completly
um can this guy not use his ands at all well all he des is use his stik on the floor mainly when he doesnt actually need to but when the ball is in the air and most normal keepers would use there hands to deflect firstly away from the chest and face he doesnt so i think this guy personally is ok but pretty crap for his age(how he looks) and i think most peopple on this page would agree
waoh this video is going against everything ive been taught, wen u save with the feet u never lift them of the ground to stop to ball from going under pad like he did wrong at 3:24, also the keepers hands were not high enough making it hard for him to save a high shot, never save with your head because u cant control where tha balls going. also use the left glove to angle the ball to the right wen ball is coming at ur chest
@cartmanthefatass nooo if it a good shot your helmet might get a crack making it useless, plus rebounds are unpredictable and uncontrollable just use your handsXD
nobody on the planet ever purposely tries to make a save with your head surely. Sometimes you get hit, fair enough but thats why you wear a helmet. Technique on this video is just horrible, bloody french
hey, i play keeper but at a higher level then i used to.. and was wondering if i can slide across to save a goal and is it very useful or just looks cool? thanks for any help Eradium =]
its the perfect answer for those tricky shots that just might be out of reach if you stretch your limbs, but i only occasionally do so because it takes extra time and effort to launch your entire body across goal haha. i normally stretch out my legs to get them, and mostly you should be able to stop those shots if your positioning is good (:
Yeah it's a bad style, but I use it only if I don't have another option to stop the ball. And it's more effective than stopping the ball with your stick
lol quality saves with his head!! what a bunch of shat i play at quite a high standard and ders no way a gk would tackled a striker wid his stick! trust the french!
I know 12 and 13 yr olds with better technique than this guy, even his basic kicking is all wrong, he leans right back for everything. And what kind of idiot coach would try and teach people to make saves with their helmet, surely thats what you have gloves for. Noenacevich, who commented on here before, if your looking for goalkeeper techniques, Im a coach and I can tell you this is awful
If anyone doesn't understand why this vid is crap, get hold of the EHA Goalkeeper training presentation, it includes video clips of proper technique. It's not the only way to play, but it does at least make good efforts to justify it's style.
i dont like the way he puts his hands.. but the rest i think its a good video, there are so little things about gk on the net... i any of you have please comment me

these aren't skills, its just something you do when you are for your first time GK, when you have skills, you really know what to do.
