Are you kidding me? Donna 's problem isn't he voice (although it was never amazing) She never knew how to jam out, she's fine with structure, but she has no ability to jam... look at the way she's constantly nervous... she doesn't know when her next part is... she can't flow... and that's why she sucks...
I believe these were "Dead Heads" only concerts. Tried to get tix for these shows but went to capitol theater in passaic NY . Was my first show, and it was awesome
my first scarlet>sunshine.... but, i think dicks picks 33 (10 9&10 76) had one of THE funkiest scarlets. or, possibly dicks picks 6, with the vibes and what not. just my two cents anways.
As a bass player myself, Phil can do no wrong - the man's one of THE geniuses of modern music...but WTF was he thinking when he hit on, and stuck to, the not-so-genius idea of the glissandi ( = slides, for non-musos) in Begonias?
@Exilemainstreet Donna and Keith Godchaux joined the band as Ron "pigpen" Mc Kernan's health was fading in 1971. I think the first girl was partly doomed out of jealousy and partly from an over- intensified scrutiny. LIke all of the band sometimes she was on and sometimes she wasn't. Some liked her voice some didn't. Thing is most accepted them into the family of the dead....which i think isnt a unique story for deadheads.
& to those who don't like Donna I'm not going to "thumbs down" your comments because you are entitled to your opinion, but I personally love her voice. Sure she could be a little overbearing at times, but her beauty far out ways that. imo. Peace!
This is one of my favorite scarlet begonias, at one point I was trying to collect every show with scarlet begonias but I haven't found many bootlegs to record lately. Thanks for this!
@togaroc345 If memory serves, don't they end the second set with Sunshine Daydream reprise? I need this show, I used to have it most of my shows were destroyed when I gad a car accident. I'm ok, I just miss my tunes. and I like the scarlet>victim>fire cause scarlet>fire gets old, in my opinion.
@mountainboy32 I hate Donna's voice...half the time I don't know what the hell song she's listening to with how off key she is. Her voice is enough to give me nightmares!! Good thing for her that she was married to Keith
@mountainboy32 - And, I'll help you! Donna was wonderful. She and Keith were family, she was pleasant, classy and cool. IMHO, she was hot too. Still love her to this very day. I'll love the Grateful Dead all the days of my life.

@Exilemainstreet I think so...she ruins every song she sings on...except that one that's just her.

it's the only scarlet > ssdd
they didn't start doing scarlet > fire until the spring of 77 (3-18-77) there's about 50 versions until that point.
12-6-89 oakland has a great set, scarlet > sugar mags. then they close the 2nd set with ssdd. clarence clemmons plays on it too.
it's the 20th anniversary of altamont.
the scarlet >victim > fire from 8-16-91 is great as well.
