  • stunning

  • thank you...an amazing interpretation...!!! :-)

  • WOW! Never Heard This Awesome Song By The The LEGEND! That Is Sam Cooke, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Mel Carter And Tony Williams From The Platters Are Some Of The Finest Male Singers That Have Ever Lived, Any Key Or Any Note Is Possible With These Guys

  • way too real.

  • This is by far the best version ever sung by the greatest soul singer ever and i miss Sam Cooke. This is beautiful.

  • @wpaulvandyk Yes I TOTALLY AGREE! Have You Heard Mel Carter? He Is A Very Respectable Close Second To Mr Cooke I Think

  • "Too real" !

  • And it doesn't mean they'll listen to it with friends, or try to convince them, or share whatever skill or lesson they learned with their friends, but somewhere they'll find a use for whatever lesson they learn in their early days. They might listen to the music alone away from their friends. Of course whats new is sold and promoted more, but almost everywhere there is a rap station there is an oldies station and concerts with soul and R&B passing through town a couple times a year.

  • I'm not saying people have bad parents or that these people are young, poor, and ignorant. But what a person is exposed to early on has effects well into later life. Yes, some parents are trying hard to give their kids culture and make them well-rounded, and they still fall prey to fads and trends. I had periods in my life where all I wanted to hear was Gangsta Rap. But music is just like an early upbringing in the church. Eventually the majority their way back to what was exposed early on

  • And I'm not saying that's the only reason. There are a lot of factors as it relates to music taste and other things in life. I never said don't listed to current music. But studies have shown the more variety of things you are exposed to in childhood the better. For the young people who say they love this type of music, did the heard this type of music for the first time withing the last 6 months. Plus, in the youtube era there is a lot more self-exposure to things even just stumbling onto thing

  • absolutely one of the best

  • what year was this recorded?

  • I love everything he ever recorded.

  • Before I listened to this I had a resolution to kill a friend of mine. All i can say now is that my friend is a fan of Sam Cook.

  • love the vid and description :)

  • @AdeleRiwai Thank You.

  • 12 racist mother fuckers....

  • @shlaabahoot420 how u know they white? a white guy got me hooked on Sam Cooke so just sayin

  • @shlaabahoot420 Not racism... Those are people who have an honest opinion. Individuals... I love Sam Cooke, but I certainly do not love this comment.

  • So sincerely sung

  • What a loss. Incredible talent.

  • Sam Cooke sang this song with his own inimitable, pure honesty and he did credit to the song (one of my favourite and the very first record I ever bought by The Platters). I think we all miss him still after all this time.

  • @Goingback1944 I say he's one of the best ever. I love "A change is gonna come" "I'll come running back to you" etc. LOVE THEM!

  • @BenjaminKuruga You mention "A change gonna come". I have to say that I think that song must have been one of the most difficult to write ever, let alone sing. I seldom use the word 'genius', but Sam Cooke's rendition took a touch of genius. I have a number of his CD's and I don't think he ever sang a bad song.

  • @Goingback1944 True very true! :D

  • PURE CLASS.

  • This is very relaxing! Sam's voice just melts your troubles away.

  • a voice of an angel!

  • That's very beautiful rendition of my favorite song. Did not know, Sam Cooke sung this song and I can feel the emotion of the song. Thanks, for sharing/posting.

  • Thank you.

  • Humbled. Incredible...

  • there may be better vocalists than sam, although not many. but sam is the greatest SINGER of them all. his phrasing is magic...

  • I miss you so much Lauren...... I feel like my heart won't mend, like it want's to protect itself from ever going through this again..... I'm glad I love you, it was worth all of this terrible pain...... I will go on pretending now, pretending that my life without you matters.

  • only better voice was nat cole. Sam was a legend. God bless him

  • @TaiDieVest Have to agree on that, although Tony Williams (with The Platters when this song was originally done) had one hell of a voice as well.

  • 10 people have no soul.

  • I love the Platters , but Sam knocks it out of the park with this.

  • i never want to turn this off <3 beautiful x

  • Where in the world did you find this?

  • phrasing and delivery

  • Sam Cooke had the greatest voice and that's a fact....SMOOTH

  • i just love myself some sam cook

  • superbeeeeeeeeeee

  • Like so many other great singers, "Gone Too Soon".Thanks

  • arent we all

  • too real when I feel what my heart can't conceive, oh yes i'm the great pretender.

  • one of the greatest voices to ever grace a microphone

  • its crazy how im 18 but i love all sam cook and all the old music

  • @DeneeSmiles not so crazy considering the poor quality and quantity of todays music.

  • @OTOWN2STOCKTOWN

    tient un petit francais

  • The Platters version will always be my favorite, but Sams' s is fabulous too. I hope he's in heaven, somewhat subdued, but still singing.

  • sam sing it baby

  • Where is Roy Clarks version?

  • why don't people write music like this anymore?

  • @gaozhi2007

Because real talent doesn't sell anymore.

  • @gaozhi2007 if they did, it wouldn't sell. kids today arent raised properly

  • @ShikeoFujiwara it's very sad that kids listen to crap like Justin Bieber and Rihanna instead of what the used to listen to back in the 50's and 60's. I like the movie Stand By Me, and a lot has to do with the music the kids liked.

  • fave ever film

  • @stumc5 I just got it on Blu ray. maybe I will watch it today! Have you ever read the novella version? It's by Steven King in the book Four Seasons. It's my favorite piece by King. Even better than the movie.

  • @ShikeoFujiwara it is soo dssipointing to hear you say that kids these days arn't raised propery and that this music wouldnt sell, becaue its a lie, im 17 i know i would be buying it does that mean i am raised properly? or im the exception to your huge generalisation? i love music like this and alot of my friends 17 and 18 yearolds love it too. i think the reason kids dont like it is BECAUSE it isnt sold and promoted enough. not because their parents didnt raise them right.

  • @LauraLi931 I don't think the issue is how children are being raised, but the modern culture being promoted by unethical and cheap mainstream music. Back in the days of the Great Pretender it was about QUALITY, and now it is about QUANTITY. I am 17 myself and while I keep an open mind, I am for the most part disgusted by most music today.

  • @LauraLi931 I do have to disagree with you and others that say it has nothing with how children are raised. IT might be the only reason, but it's part of it. I think you're the exception and not the rule. You and friends might have a little more sense and open-mindedness that others your page, but I have to re post my original reply because it did not post for some strange reason. You're 17 but there are so many at 7 who can listen to whatever they want. BTW I love the Platters version too.

  • @SonicBoomC98 You and others seem to make some very wild generalizations. I'm over 50 but I go to place where all types and races mingle - from punk rock fans, goths, gays, businessmen, lawyers and even former cops (like me), but mostly punk rockers. The jukebox has a variety of music from Sinatra to Lady Gaga and everything in between. The younger people listen to *any music that they deem good!* It might be a real awakening for some of the people making comments to get out in the real world.

  • @genfrogy Well, I'm around young people alot. I get out in the world. Of course in a club or at a party they're going to listen to whatever is being played, but that's not where you judge them. Young people are easily swayed by trend and fad. Yes, true there are some people who can listen to something for 30 years then hear something else and realize what they've missed out, but most people gravitate to the familiar. Let a group of kids get in your car and who you will who was exposed to what.

  • @genfrogy I'm not saying it's 100% parents, but they have a role. And a lot of them are not even trying. Many don't pay any attention to TV show, movie, and game ratings. They let their kids listen to any old thing. Parents play a role in shaping kids. IF your kids grow up only on junk food, there is a chance they will become a vegetarian after getting a few they like, but its not likely. What's the age range of that place. So, you think they were never exposed previously to all those musics?

  • @SonicBoomC98 You're making a huge generalization on something you could not possibly know when you say things like "a lot of them are not even trying" and "They let their kids listen to any old thing." How could you possibly know these things? I don't judge kids! I accept them, as I do all people. The place is far from "a club", the age range is from 21 up to 70+. It's mostly younger people who play the jukebox and pick Sinatra as often as Elvis, Johnny Cash, Metalica, and Social D.

  • @SonicBoomC98 Who is this "They" and Them" you refer to in your posts? BTW, I forgot to mention, the place I go also has metrosexuals, gays and transvestites as customers. There's also an abundance of vegans and an equal number of junk food junkies. One time an Aretha song came on and a young lady asked me who it was and if she was new, so, no, they haven't always been "exposed to all those musics"!

  • @genfrogy The Veggies and Junk Food was just an analogy. "They" are young people I met in my local area, in college, where I've traveled with various school organizations, and on social networking sites, mainly high school and early college age people. Of course nothing holds true for 100% of any group, but most of the ones I've talked to who are not fond of older music were already so overexposed to current music before hearing much old or the ratio was way off.

  • @LauraLi931 It is parents. Some do nothing and let kids watch BET,MTV,VH1, and Request channels all day. My dad grew up in the blues and early soul era. Mom grew up in the soul, funk and R&B era. I grew up in the early gangsta rap days. I listen to all this because they played what they and their older siblings grew up on around me. They put it on those radio stations along with gospel. Most kids get in the car with parents listen only to today's music. I wasn't 3 and singing "touch my body"

  • this version is good for those nights when you fall back in you chair with a hot cup of cocoa, but i still like Freddie Mercury's version better, but this one is good too...

  • love sam cooke...gr8 video

  • Lovely : )

  • Caro Sam R.I.P.

  • man i love the way Sam Cooke sings this. perfect execution!

  • unbelivable

  • @trevycoley83 he said cooke's voice is a beautiful

  • Golden Voice...........

  • Sam Cooke certainly could wrap himself around a song and give it such a real personell magical touch. His purity of soul just shines brilliantly through each song he touches and sings.

  • I'd love a remix with more Sam & less harp but he's fabulous.

Never heard this v. before. Thanks!

  • Truly a beautiful arrangement done my a great artist.

Sam, you gave us your best, RIP.

  • sam can sing and no one will ever have his place in history. but why is it that everyone loves these new cats who stole this stuff because they couldnt create there own

  • @mimc313 Such an absolute touching rendition of a great song ! Sam was one in a million and such soul and integrity !! He will never by forgotten ! - ' Real Talent ' is everlasting !! not like some of the modern day fly-by-night 'Celebrities' who are really products of clever marketing directed towards the young and impressionable !! The modern music industry rules the minds of the young !!

  • @OEDBrowser You got that right, his music still explains what we feel at times, sometimes we feel nobody knows our sorrow, we wish somebody would ease our troublin mind, and even though some are oblivious to what is being written and expressed thru the music he makes, there are those who take it down and pass it around. Yeah, these cats out here steal his stuff because they got know creative juices, but you know what i know the sam can do. What Sam Cooke can do, and whooooh it aint simple.

  • sam can sing and noone will ever have his place in history

  • dunia930, God bless is so sweet

  • This may be the best song I have ever heard. Amazing voice.

  • wow truthfully i like this version better and this coming from a 20 year old haha but the platters are still awesome

  • WOW! Goosbumps!!! My mom was almost a preteen when the king of soul was shot to death in 1964. I can relate to his soulful music more so than most songs of today. He had amazing vocal abilities and conducted himself first class in his persona. May his soul RIP as we enjoy his talent.

  • Somehow I've never heard this version before. It sent a chill up my spine like I was back in the day and Sam was still with us, but then again once you've heard Sam he is always with you.

  • i love this man's voice!

  • Never heard this version either. Sam Cooke and Elvis......2 legends.

  • Sam Cooke has the purest voice of any man that ever blessed this earth.

    Pure velvet.

I will listen to him until my dying day.

The best version of this song i have ever heard.

  • That version of The Great Pretender is very good if you want to sleep :D

  • never heard this before. Great rendition by Mr. Cooke. Thanks for uploading this!

  • Sam's renditiion of the Platters classic equals their version in my estimation.

  • Just listen my friends and this mans voice can relax you and make any body doing the folowing smile, dance and sing along I am :O)

  • If this song is what it says it is, it's one of the best things ever. If it's not, it STILL is.

  • really great poeple die in such misterios wayz...

  • This Is So Beautiful, I Just Want To Cry

  • Sam Cooke death and how

  • @rufus3rd he was shot and killed by a hotel manager at a hotel he was staying in. she claimed he attacked her and the woman he was staying with but a lot of people believe otherwise.

  • @rufus3rd adding to dcmadness27. He was shot on dec 11th 1964 in the hacienda hotel in los angeles, california. The judge ruled as "justifiable homocide". I think murder is possibly the least justifiable crime you can get to be honest.

  • @1978jabbo - 1964 and white ignorance, sadly enough, made much 'justifiable' ... and still to this day, 2010, far too much ignorance and prejudice; a blessing indeed, Mr. Sam Cooke--great to hear such talent. I'm white by the way!

  • this is the most beautiful version of this song i have ever hear!!!!

  • sams voice speks especially to our hearts here.

  • la mas conmovedora version de este tema que escuche en mis 60 años.gracias desde argentina trevy un abrazo

  • De beste uitvoering die ik ken!

  • Nie słyszałam tego wykonania. CUDO.......Piękne dzięki

  • Love You Sammy:)

  • I ENvy these man!

  • Great and emotive song.

    Beautiful.

  • i have never heard this version befire. i'm an old man now, but this brings back memories of the saturday night dance. this is playing, you have your best girl wrapped in your arms( that's when a boy held a girl to dance with.) your are slow waltzing, and singing the words in her ear. yea! those were the days

  • Beautiful song sung by a beautiful voice. Pure talent with no tricks. Thanks for sharing.

  • When Sam sing a song you can say that the song has been sung !!!

  • J'en ai des frissons ! Quelle voix !

  • It is great.I heard this song many yeas ago,and it is just as great as it was then.50 years ago

  • Are there a lot of tapes of Mr. Cooke performances, when I play his music it's hard to break away, he sings with so much feeling.p.winn

  • i want to own a copy of this ....how do i buy it? please help

  • Everybody on youtube this is Vakano and my new Video

    Simply Put (Um Bluesing)...

  • This is by far the best rendition of this song I have ever heard. It is not meant to be upbeat, it is not meant to be done with a smile, it is not meant to be done dancing around a stage. It is a very sad song. Lyrics depict a very emotionally distraught individual who experienced a deep loss, yet on the outside is somehow able to cover the hurt to those around him by pretending all is well. Only the incredible style of Sam Cooke could pull this off. No one else even comes in a close second.

  • @bradwi2001 You know it ! Could not have said it any better,

  • What a blessing for me to hear this. And even though Sam is not 'here', he is here. Thanks.

  • Too many gospel singers dying such tragic deaths, Cook, Presley ust to name a few, such sadness.

  • DJDJANGO1,

I never said the Funk brothers were "only a house band". I said they were "the House band of Motown", which they were. Secondly, I did not say they were not "an authority", I said they are not "the" authority--which they are not. No other source on yahoo supports their biased opinion. Your whole argument is based off one source. That's hardly adequate research.

My assertions were not false, only your interpretations of them.

  • The lyrics are so true, yes a great pretender in a world of his own. And I left that liar and cheat.... He was a clown and I have moved on....Thank God I am free!!!

  • Platters hit version of this was very good, but Sam's version is magnificent!! His voice and style is second to none. I could listen to him for hours. The first album I ever got was Sam Cooke. Hollywood needs to make a movie of his life. I loved Buddy Holly, but Sam was much better. He was murdered for what money he had on him that fateful night. It was not the hotel manager shooting in self defense. I don't think anyone much believes her story. i certainly didn't.

  • I Have To Admit, They Just Dont Make Music The Way They Use To... Sam Cooke Is One Of My Favorite Singers And Some People Of My Generation Dont Even Know His Name... R.I.P To One of Songs All Time Greats...

  • young Generation dont know about music

  • I loved the 60's so,so many wonderful memories, and all this wonderful music.

  • I love Sam Cooke's voice, it's so soothing.

  • This aint a Soul song! Classic Sam RnB ballad. He has been rebranded in the last 15 years as a "Soul" singer but he sung 50's early 60's RnB/Doo Wop/Blues/Standards & Gospel. Now dont get it twisted; Sam HAD soul, sang soulfully but he was not a Soul artist. He influenced them yes. By the time Soul hit the streets in 63 he was in semi retirement. Technically speaking his only Soul tune was "Shake", he wanted to try the new style. He had more in common with Ray Charles & Dinah Washington.

  • Sam was one of the fathers of Soul. Soul music is secular lyrics mixed with gospel

inspired music with a funky beat. This sound originated around the early 1950's as as more gospel singers started recording r&b. It was first called "race" music and around 1963, "soul". If you look on any "origins of soul" site you will see Sam Cooke mentioned. "You Send Me", "Cupid", "Only Sixteen" "Bring it on Home to Me", and "A Change is Gonna Come" are all Soul records.

  • Granted Sam Cooke inspired or was an architect of Soul music but his only technically Soul style tune was "Shake." That sound didnt originate till the ealry to mid 60's [see The Funk Bros explain it in Standing In The Shadows film.] Yup, RnB was originally referred to as Race music. The term "Soul music" did catch on to the new style of RnB that was comin out of Stax & Motown and not the previous RnB style which Sam Cooke was doing. The rebranding of Sam Cooke as a Soul singer is a recent thing.

  • IMost authorities cite Ray Charles' 1954 hit "I Got a Woman" and "Hit the Road Jack" with being the first soul songs. Also, commonly mentioned as soul songs are , "Only Sixteen" by Sam Cooke and "To Be Loved" and "Lonely Teardrops" by Jackie Wilson, all of which, were recorded in the 1950's. "Stop Doggin'Me Around" by Jackie was recorded in 1960. How can you say "Bring it on Home to Me" and "A Change is Gonna Come" are not soul recordings? By the very definition of the word, they are so.

  • No, most authorities for the longest time have recognised the records u mention as RnB. Only recently has there been a rebranding of them as Soul music . This has happened because a: these artists clearly influenced the later Soul music genre but also b: because there are some writers lately who cannot distinguish between being "soulful" "having soul" and the actual Soul music genre. These records sound different in comparison, but of course they have soul. However, they are RnB.

  • @DJDJANGO1 Semi Retirement? The guy never stopped. He was still making music in 63, and 64. Matter of fact he had just started his own record company. This beautiful man lived a life all too short

  • @coreyxh Yes Semi Retirement. Yes he was still making records but he was also concentrating more on the business side with his record company....that and the tragic death of his son kept him out of performing for a further 6 months, so yes, semi retirement from recoding & performing. You really should do your research before adding knee-jerk comments.

  • I've done plenty of research. The loss of his son was very detrimental, and sure he was focusing on the business side of things with some up and comers from back in the day, but I still believe this man would have sung until he couldn't anymore. Its just what he did. Just cause he stops for 6 months doesn't make him semi-retired ;)

  • @DJDJANGO1 your comment about soul music was inaccurate. The sound you referred to was Motown or Detroit soul. There are at least 12 sub genres of soul music, each with their own sound and characteristics, There is Southern and Memhis for example. Johnnie Taylor and Al Green were from those genres.

The Funk brothers were the house band for Motown. They are not the authority on soul music's origin.

Listen to "Cry to Me" by Soloman Burke from 1962, that's pure, uncut soul.

  • @DJDJANGO1 so wasnt yeah man (sweet soul music, - by arthur connelly soul ?) wasn't , isnt all the willie hutch/ bobby womack/ areatha / simms twins covers of sam songs soul ............ obviously soul has a start date .... does it have an end date?

  • what a voice robbie williams eat your heart out you will never compete with that voice

  • robbie williams can't even sing never mind compete!

  • the wonderful smooth voice of Sam.A real artist and what a great loss.

  • Pure gold! There ain't a voice that touches me so deeply. A God-given talent with the emotive interpretation of a suffering heart. This is THE song for the broken-hearted and lovelorn.

  • I simply adore Sam and this song...so pure and classic...But url doesn't work for keepvid...In which Cooke's album this song it's included? thanks
