Yeah its pretty much to familiarize you with using your gear and giving you confidence in quickly donning your mask and clearing it. The CS gas puts the pressure on and makes it more stressful. All Marines are required to "Qualify" in the gas chamber once annually regardless of MOS. Even pencil pushers have to continue to visit the beloved gas chamber and qualify on the rifle range.
So what, exactly, is the point behind sessions like this? I know I'm supposed to go through it because I'm a cop and expected to employ tear gas, so I have to be subjected to it like all our less-lethal techniques like gas, pepper spray, and tasers. But for the others... is this supposed to teach you to trust your gear, or are they also anticipating using gas at some point?
Makes sense. It just seems that, in war, they'd be likely to use something more dangerous since, after all, using CS gas in war gets you in the same amount of trouble as any other gas.
MPs and security forces have to get sprayed with something else on top of it too and go through a course with it going to town on their face as well, so i would assume like cops
