No disrepect to John Lennon, but I wonder if Pete Ham was ever approached to become a Beatle after John's departure. Thanks for the video. Wonderful ending on this song.
This is a great song . . here and in all the covers that have been mentioned. I saw Bad Finger as a teenager a few years after this as a support act to another band at the Kursaal in Southend in Essex/England, less than a year before Pete Ham took his life . . they gave a great performance as I remember and as I hadn't gone to the gig to see them it always left an impression on me . . it's so sad that the two guys who wrote this song felt that they needed to take their own lives :-(
@fbencounter Wow! That's amazing. That was the very last gig Pete Ham played before he died. They were supporting the Man Band. Look it up at badfingerlibrary. You should let the website guy know your recollections.
Wouldnt have to work if they were still alive. Only the writers get the royalties not the singers and thats for 80 years. One of the biggest songs of all time and it was only an album track.Sounds a lot like Picasso
I read that in 2005 that settlement was made. Pete's and Tom's estate will now retain all song writer rights to their music.
Pete Ham’s sole heir, daughter Petera, now owns the Pete Ham copyrights, while Tom Evans' wife, Marianne, along with their son, Stephen, own the Tom Evans copyrights.
@ThevanGoghBlues I agree. Considering that Pete Ham and Tom Evans both hanged themselves, I think when they sing the lines, "I can't live, if....", you know that they are sincere about describing their tenuous hold on life and that therefore, there is authenticity to their performance of this song.
Im just glad this song gave Pete Ham and Tom Evans the recognition they deserved. This song showed how to stand the test of time, and was covered by over 200 artists. Those two were bound for greatness. And in my mind they are my favorite duo of all time. Sad part is I just discovered their music back in Jan.

I think Harry Nilsson did the best job covering this song and I have to admit Mariah Carey sang this very well. This isn't bad but it doesn't have the depth the other two versions had. But they did write it!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland, OH. That's pathetic. Who would go there to see anyone? Seriusly. Why bother playing rock music if the Hall of Fame is in Cleveland, the mistake on the lake craphole.
Una de las mejores canciones de la historia. Dios tenga a Pete y a Tom en su gloria. La triste historia de su partida me rompe el corazón. Gran grupo, exelente sonido
THIS BEATIFUL SONG WITH VERY HAUTING MELODY REMINDS ME OF MY FIRST TRUE LOVE AND WHEN I SAW HER FOR THE LAST TIME SAYING GOOD BYE IN THE RAILWAY STATION. YET I COULD HAVE STOPPED HER FROM GOING, SOME HOW IT DID NOT HAPPEN AS IF FATE INTERVENED, (YES , I HAD YOU THERE BUT THEN ILET YOU GO)IT GIVES ME THE SHIVERES EVERY TIME IHEAR IT
I FEEL FOR PETER AND TOM WHO COWROTE IT, BUT THEY ALSO HAD A HUGE HIT WITH NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. MAY GOG BLESS THEIR SOUL FOR EVER.
The song was not made "most famous" by the list of artists you named. How could all of them have made it "most famous"? It was made most famous by Harry Nilsson. The others merely did covers, except for Mariah who made it famous again with a younger generation.
I'm 64 yrs old and was a teenager in the 60s, the greatest era of pop music - I saw the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan break onto the scene. But this is THE BEST song ever - the lyrics encapsulate the sorrow we all feel when we lose a lover ...and the pain never really goes away. As others have said, the story of Badfinger is the saddest in pop history. RIP Pete Ham and Tom Evans - you created the BEST !!
cheers beatlestoneful, glad to hear that someone feels the same as me. Pete Ham's brother ran a musical instrument shop for many years in Swansea, a great bloke, helped musicians all round the area in good deals on equipment. That is what the Ham's and Bagfinger were all about.
You must be joking me here - thos is perfect rock ballad stuff, which Badfinf=ger started, from Dykan Thomas; Swansea. It is so perfect, as Nilsson and Masia Carrie thought as well?
I like their original version better than Harry Nilsson's. When his version became the hit it probably pushed them over the edge. Both Hamm and Evans committed suicide.
@borch1260 NO, NO, NO, NO! their committing suicide had nothing to do with anyone covering their song. they were all quite flattered by Nillsons version. You have no idea what you are saying. Read up on them. Anything, cause that is ridiculous
@borch1260 Hi There. Yes Pete Ham and Tommy Evans committed suicide. Pete left a suicide note blaming a US citizen for conning Badfinger (and Pete and Tommy in particular) out of million of pounds in royalties - that figure would be several hundred million pounds now. They loved Nilsson's version and it should have given them financial security - they felt cheated, became depressed and took their own lives. So sad and a sad song also. This would make a great movie. RIP Pete Ham and Tommy Evans
I definitely like their version best. This band was/is the embodiment of the evils of the recording industry. Wherever there's artists, there's someone looking to take advantage of their talent to exploit it.
Agree with @magottlieb, this is not lip-synced. The studio version has a drawn out chorus ("I can't live..."), this version is chopped. The guitar and bass phrasing are dead on, not possible in lip syncing. Believe it or not, a lot of early 70's live or recorded TV was live, not lip synced.
@TheChuckk Look Chuck, never knock and artists singing an original hit that he/they wrote. It is as sacred as rewriting the bible. The words come from the heart and the music comes from the soul. Quels superbes musiciens. Cette chanson est l'une des plus mainstream de leur répertoire, mais enfin, ils y mettent quand même beaucoup de coeur et d'inspiration .
@nicky196427 I agree Badfinger has had enough stolen from them by their manager;never mind having people believe someone else wrote this ballad. It is a tragic story and they were such a awesome band."Without you" is such a great song it has been covered by over 180 famous artists.Paul McCartney once call this song "The Killer ballad of all time".I'm happy to see you stick up for Pete Ham and Tom Evans. Thanks
La version original de esta rola y mi favorita despues Nilsson la hizo famosa y por cierto la causa de el suicidio de Peter Ham fue de que no le reconocieron como autor de esta gema de la musica triste...
I don't like how they cut off where they could of drug out the chorus, Harry Nilsson really made this song shine. I give credit to Bad Finger for writing the song, very emotional and beautiful.
@Illivatur Badfinger did not do that;Someone else did that.I have seen this video where the song is finished.Harry does this song very well;but Pete Ham and Tom Evans were not just singers;they were also song writers, musicians
What a masterpiece of beauty this song is! If Badfinger had continued to make music with this great line-up, one can only imagine how much more beautiful the world would have been, because of the beautiful music that these great musicians musicians would have continued to create: it was music that deeply moved the heart, and soul and spirit of the listener! My heart breaks because of the tragedy that befalled these two great musicians from this band! Peace, Love, and Joy to all, BobbyK
One of my favorite bands from the old days. Lots of problems with money and such. Pete and one of the others commited suiside. They backed up George Harrison in The Concert for Bangladesh.
Just finished watching American Idol out of curiosity, James Durbin did his version of this song. Never liked him, always screaming another Adam Lambert wannabe. Pretty messed up it was. I wish they would leave this song alone.
I think it's simple. If I could sit in a room, and only had one choice among all the artists who have recorded this song, I would want to hear Tom and Pete do their song, as great as all the covers are. Simple. Peace.
No need to argue Mariah vs. Harry. Everyone that has been around listening to music for the past four decades knows that Nilsson made this a huge hit in the 70's, so much he won a Grammy for it.
2 quick points: a) I'm a big BF fan AND a HarryHead. It's a Pete Ham song and BF originated it with a terrific recording that, like much BF, rises to a level rarely reached in pop music. Nilsson's was struck by it and sunk his amazing chops and emotion into it to in a way that made it more accessible. Both versions are definitive, if that's possible. This should have made the boys into wealthy men. b) I do not believe the description is accurate. This is a not a lip-synced version.
@magottlieb It's synched. They might be singing, but if so they are doing it over a track. The instruments don't match. The acoustic is missing and the keys don't match. Nothing wrong with that though. It was a pretty standard practice. Still a great song & group.
@magottlieb pretty much agree with you but I beleive Pete wrote verse and Tom wrote refrain then they put their 2 halves together ala Lennon/Mccartney....They both deliver awesome vocals on their respective parts...Sounds like a Pete Ham lead guitar but i guess it could have been Joey,,,Man BF has to be the saddest story in the history of Rock.....
@Crodon I do not believe that is a pertinent arguement. Good performers, especially when working with a good sound crew, have enough mic technique to USE the mic to their benefit.
Even if BF would have done only just this one song, they would be well remembered. Wish I would have been a teenager in the 70s and moved around these great bands.
I've always thought this song must qualify as the saddest song in history. If the words and sentiment of the song arent enough, the true story behind it is shattering.
@kevinwayne50 Kevinwayne is right.. Badfinger has not reached his generation.. The Wiggles generation.. Hey Kevin.. Can you point your fingers and do the twist?.. Lol. For adults who know music Badfinger certainly reaches us all :)
@gibsondrummer No, actually I'm not joking. F.Y.I. I never said her version was BETTER or the BEST. All I said was that I LIKED her rendition more. I don't believe there's anything wrong with preference at all, especially when I even added that THIS version was great as well. You must be the one joking about Mariah apparently "murdering" the cover. I guess she "murdered" this song so well that it reached #3 in the Billboard Hot 100. There's a reason why it was made famous by her.
@seansocheap she went no 3 because that is what the youngsters get to listen to nowadays. And then you have biggest morons like kanye west and diddy dirty money with their so call music. Carey most definately mega butchered this song in a classic way. Pete would tumble in his grave everytime her version is heard.
@nicky196427 Nope, I don't think he would since Mariah can actually sing. Have you heard her? Do you know many successful singers who possesses 5 octaves with a whistle register? And you know what? I may be a "youngster" but at least I know not to be a disrespectful hater unlike "grownups" like you. Do you see me bashing Badfinger at all? No, sir, I don't think so. So grow up, music changes. Deal with it. Complain all you want, but it won't change the fact that Mariah made this famous :)
@seansocheap You're on this page which is sacred to BF fans and glorifying someone who never did justice to this song, isnt this disrespectful. We grownups dont need youngsters like you to teach us of people like Carey and her vocal gimmicks. I was her biggest if not maniacal fan. I had her everywhere I went. Then she came up with her 4the album Honey, correct me if I am wrong. Someone with her vocal ability she did everything wrong. She could do wonders. She became a bimbo and lost all respect
@seansocheap And for you information, Carey did not make this song famous, she did nothing for this song. Nilsson did and did big. If anything this song actually made her famous all over the world. Before this she was probably only charting in the US, Uk and Japan, so dont fuck with me and tell me to grow up.
Imagine... in Order to have WRITTEN one of the most Heartfelt... Tear Jerking... LOVE songs EVER... The Guys that brought it to the World had to COMMIT SUICIDE!
They FELT LIFE so Deeply... So Emotionally... So Tragically... THAT They first EXPERIENCED The Horrors First Hand...
THEN... They WROTE about IT... And Then... THEY KILLED Themselves!
What a SAD, SAD, SAD fuckin Song... RIP... Pete Ham and Tom Evans.
hugely respect everyones opinions and comments here but personally i love the laid back, no attitude, version of this song. Given a combination of the words and the horrendous real life story behind this song, it has to be a contender for saddest song ever written??
I wonder why 41 people would bother to find this classic on utube and then give a thumbs down to the ones who created it. They must be American Idol fans ...or just #@!*%^# in the head!
In my mind this is the best version of the song .... the original is most often the best. If they only released it as a single no one would recall Nillson's version.
Tom Evan's voice on the chorus--- wow. I've heard other versions of this song, but no one -- NO ONE-- can put the feeling into those words like he did. You can hear the heart break. Sad but beautiful.
One of the best rock bands of all time.

I don't like how they cut off where they could of drug out the chorus, Harry Nilsson really made this song shine. I give credit to Bad Finger for writing the song, very emotional and beautiful.

@Illivatur
I agree. If you hear Harry's DEMO of this song it will tear your heart out, sheer perfection. Harry made this song his own.
Babyhowdy233 8 months ago
@Illivatur Badfinger did not do that;Someone else did that.I have seen this video where the song is finished.Harry does this song very well;but Pete Ham and Tom Evans were not just singers;they were also song writers, musicians

best version of this song 100%
always the original.

the only reason harry had this hit is because Badfinger already had 2 hits on air they shared the love sweet.

Harry Nilsson can't be beat!
Bad Finger doesn't come close!!

Harry Nilsson may have made Badfinger proud but James Durbin certainly didn't. I hope he knows who wrote this song.

James Durbin Should win American Idol Based Solely on this song. He put enough emotion in it to make badfinger proud.

@shadowcat7879 although he didn´t sing it very well

James Durbin sang this on American Idol last night ...he credited Harry Nilsson not knowing it was written by these two great guys....Tom and Pete

One of my favorite bands from the old days. Lots of problems with money and such. Pete and one of the others commited suiside. They backed up George Harrison in The Concert for Bangladesh.
MWBrrr 8 months ago
Just finished watching American Idol out of curiosity, James Durbin did his version of this song. Never liked him, always screaming another Adam Lambert wannabe. Pretty messed up it was. I wish they would leave this song alone.
nicky196427 8 months ago
I think it's simple. If I could sit in a room, and only had one choice among all the artists who have recorded this song, I would want to hear Tom and Pete do their song, as great as all the covers are. Simple. Peace.
forumghost1 8 months ago
@forumghost1 I totally agree. Tom and Pete, to hear them sing this again would be fantastic!
Keeks4 8 months ago
No need to argue Mariah vs. Harry. Everyone that has been around listening to music for the past four decades knows that Nilsson made this a huge hit in the 70's, so much he won a Grammy for it.
042766 8 months ago
I like all the versions of this song....The song is so good.
harwicke 9 months ago
2 quick points: a) I'm a big BF fan AND a HarryHead. It's a Pete Ham song and BF originated it with a terrific recording that, like much BF, rises to a level rarely reached in pop music. Nilsson's was struck by it and sunk his amazing chops and emotion into it to in a way that made it more accessible. Both versions are definitive, if that's possible. This should have made the boys into wealthy men. b) I do not believe the description is accurate. This is a not a lip-synced version.
magottlieb 9 months ago 27
@magottlieb You are absoulutely right...Not lip synced but an actual vid....Your comments are right on...
conmaesta 8 months ago
@magottlieb It's synched. They might be singing, but if so they are doing it over a track. The instruments don't match. The acoustic is missing and the keys don't match. Nothing wrong with that though. It was a pretty standard practice. Still a great song & group.
IYAMNI 7 months ago
@magottlieb pretty much agree with you but I beleive Pete wrote verse and Tom wrote refrain then they put their 2 halves together ala Lennon/Mccartney....They both deliver awesome vocals on their respective parts...Sounds like a Pete Ham lead guitar but i guess it could have been Joey,,,Man BF has to be the saddest story in the history of Rock.....
decemberschild1217 7 months ago
@magottlieb I do think it is lip synced, the volume of his voice doesnt change as he moves away from the mic.
Crodon 6 months ago
@Crodon I do not believe that is a pertinent arguement. Good performers, especially when working with a good sound crew, have enough mic technique to USE the mic to their benefit.

seansocheap 10 months ago
@seansocheap you must be joking ! Mariah murders this song , she just ruins it completetly
gibsondrummer 9 months ago 5
@gibsondrummer No, actually I'm not joking. F.Y.I. I never said her version was BETTER or the BEST. All I said was that I LIKED her rendition more. I don't believe there's anything wrong with preference at all, especially when I even added that THIS version was great as well. You must be the one joking about Mariah apparently "murdering" the cover. I guess she "murdered" this song so well that it reached #3 in the Billboard Hot 100. There's a reason why it was made famous by her.
seansocheap 9 months ago
@seansocheap yes the reason is a load of yanky twats who know fuck all about music were buying it and yes she is fucking rubbish
yorkshiretractors 9 months ago
@seansocheap she went no 3 because that is what the youngsters get to listen to nowadays. And then you have biggest morons like kanye west and diddy dirty money with their so call music. Carey most definately mega butchered this song in a classic way. Pete would tumble in his grave everytime her version is heard.
nicky196427 9 months ago 2
@nicky196427 Nope, I don't think he would since Mariah can actually sing. Have you heard her? Do you know many successful singers who possesses 5 octaves with a whistle register? And you know what? I may be a "youngster" but at least I know not to be a disrespectful hater unlike "grownups" like you. Do you see me bashing Badfinger at all? No, sir, I don't think so. So grow up, music changes. Deal with it. Complain all you want, but it won't change the fact that Mariah made this famous :)
seansocheap 9 months ago
@seansocheap You're on this page which is sacred to BF fans and glorifying someone who never did justice to this song, isnt this disrespectful. We grownups dont need youngsters like you to teach us of people like Carey and her vocal gimmicks. I was her biggest if not maniacal fan. I had her everywhere I went. Then she came up with her 4the album Honey, correct me if I am wrong. Someone with her vocal ability she did everything wrong. She could do wonders. She became a bimbo and lost all respect
nicky196427 9 months ago
@seansocheap And for you information, Carey did not make this song famous, she did nothing for this song. Nilsson did and did big. If anything this song actually made her famous all over the world. Before this she was probably only charting in the US, Uk and Japan, so dont fuck with me and tell me to grow up.
nicky196427 9 months ago 2
Carey made it beautiful but they created it; thumbs up.

Imagine... in Order to have WRITTEN one of the most Heartfelt...

When I hear a cover of this song I think of Badfinger. When I hear Badfinger sing it I cry.
