  • it's really a pity music is not well recorded BUT Burn is amazing all the time . . . . . . music through years . . . .

  • The Bass Player is such a better Singer than David Coverdale at least at that time. Why did they even bother to use a solo singer when this Bass Player that replaced John Glover at this time sang better and even sounded like Gillen. I keep hearing these live performances with Coverdale and he just sounds like shit.

  • David Coverdale is a big Mary...

  • Notice the very rare WHITE ARP Odyssey synthis.

  • one of my favourite songs. top ten into my own playlist from more than 500 CD. GREAT.

  • blackmore is chuck norris lol

  • @Loewra827 Glenn Hughes > Chuck Norris > God

  • Blackmore is the GOD!

  • how can they play it, if it's released in 2004??

  • seal pace...seal page!

  • WAS

  • Coverdale sucks in that vid...

  • Ah man... nice piece of music anyway you cut it! Coverdale is and was a pussy singer as that was all he did! Pussies sing on shows that Jlo rate these days! Singers are a dime a dozen! BFD! Hughes did amazing things with his vocals on this song and the bugger played bass too! Damn you American Crapidol losers? You have no clue about people that can actually do something more simple than sing! Singing is like farting! Anyone can do it! Ugh

  • This is my favorite purple song

  • its a pity coverdale and hughes where fucking shit singers. They fucked DP forever.

  • @TheStotter69 It's a pity that was a fucking shit comment. You fucked YouTube forever.

  • HEI GLENN HUGHES I LIKES YOUR MEDUSA WHILE YOU WITH YOUR FORMER BAND...TRAPEZE !

  • Eric Clapton is the most overrated guitar player in the universe.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Just my opinion.

  • @rothsuede I must say he is rated just right.

  • I never seen this performance, actually near @ California Jam (Apr 6th, 1974).

    The wear was the same!

  • Bravo Glenn fuck it Coverdale

  • is this on dvd???

what is the name of that dvd??

  • music is not a race...god bless different styles.

  • I am no spring chicken and I have never heard a male vocalist who has Coverdales vocal range without distorting the sound

  • damn vocal track was pushed way to the front...shame.

  • They going to BURN that stage!!!!

  • Glenn Hughes proving once again what a twat he was.

  • What a mix! ;)

  • Ian Paice is a beast.

  • As Jon Lord put it once..."I think that the sound of Deep Purple has hell of a lot do with my organ!"

Sadly Coverdale/Hughes wasn't a patch on Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. Too many egos on stage and Glenn Hughes looking like he was auditioning for Abba and trying to sound like Stevie Wonder.

The organ/drums/guitar mix remains one of the greatest sounds in rock though...just a pity that Richie Blackmore was standing at the back of the queue when they were handing out personalities.

  • Dont give a fuck about who did what why or when its a great track so stop fighting about it chill and enjoy

  • 1974 + HD = win

  • What a strange mix.

  • Comparing deep purple with led zeppelin same as you comparing apple and orange or fender and gibson both are good, both are special, like i love deep purple's hard rock but i cant deny led zep's bluesy rock are good too..

  • Jimi, Jimmy and Ritchie all contributed in huge ways to the expression of rock guitar, composition and evolving the genre. I don't think they bitched about who was better. I enjoy the unique voice each gives or gave to the music.

  • hahahaha.....with all respect to both Page and Ritchie....I could listen to Ritchie for 48 hrs. straight but Page can bore me after 30 minutes hahahaha...call me a moron...and I wont mind it~!!!!!

  • This is not LIVE IN LONDON. It' s not like the cd. But it sounds good an Ritchie is always inpired

  • Stop arguing about nonimportant things, both Zep and Purple, Jimmy and Ritchie are awesome.

  • Glenn Hughes really knew to make himself look bad.. Sounds like he's being sodomized.

  • the best .....Ritchie, Jimmy and Hendrix....all...

  • It's ridiculous to compare, they're all legends. And at that high a level of guitar, it's all about the listeners preference. But you WILL NOT conclusively prove, nor will you convince anybody, that one is better than the others.

  • probably this was the practice tour for Coverdale, an amateur until then.

  • You guys just go on with your stupid comparisons. It's so silly. Anyone who says Jimmy Page was a lousy guitarist is obviously an idiot! Page, just like Blackmore, was a true master rock guitarist. He might not have been as slick as Blackmore but the music that poured from his guitar was that of a wizard. Just take the time to listen and it will hopefully eventually strike you right on the head!

  • coverdale is out of time and out of tone, come on. piece of history, however..

  • How phenomenal is that to see a live performance on film of a concert tape that you had from over 30 years ago. I listened to this live performance with so many friends back then and most of them are passed away. This just brings back memories of going to my first teen age partys on hot summer northern california nights and smokin weed and drinkin beer and swimmin naked with girls listening to this album.

  • 2:00 -2:07 wtf

  • Not their best stuff in my opinion.

  • bring back the 70s and 80s

  • @ Leppardsnake because Glen Hughes told me last year that it depends how good Black country Communion Cd and tour goes will determine when the Deep Purple MK3 tour starts....plus I also recently that the whole line up including Blackmore is keen to go.SWo expect when Hughes's current commitments and success slow down .It will happen by the way How good is Black Country Communion's music? best CD Ive bought in 25 years -listen to the song -One Last Soul

  • This line up is reforming in the near future -cant farken wait

  • @123thebrain what makes you say they will ?

    I hope so though :)

  • blackmore is god

  • Definitely looks like the audio and video are from the same concert.

Is there a whole dvd of this? I can't find it through google. Any pointers? Thanks!

  • RITCHIE FUCKING BLACKMORE ! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • Apperently all Glen Hughes hears is "BAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWW!"

  • Shit sound

  • gillans purple were so boring

  • かっこ良いなー

  • ritchie is the master of improv solos

  • dont know why coverdale sounds so shit live, Ritchies the man.

  • Ian Paice is a badass listen to him tear up those drums... : D

  • DEFINATLY LIKE GIMMEE MORE ok

  • DEFINATLY LIKE

  • You know plijevo, that was such a stupid statement...are you 7 years old?

  • No one can play like Ritchie Blackmore , not even Jimi Page or Jimi Hendrix ...

  • @plijevo I don't know about Hendrix, he is a separate ball game, but about Page - I can tell you with certainty.....He can only polish Ritchie' strings, frets, fretboard, machineheads etc......Page is the most overrated guitar player, whereas Ritchie is the most underrated one. Thank God....we, the listeners, know what this is all about.

  • @PoorguyNick that is obviously an exaggeration.....I know

Page is overrated, but he is not the MOST, and saying Blackmore is the most underrated player is just a load of bollocks, we all know Blackmore is better player than Page, it's just that people has their taste......(sorry if my english isn't good)

  • @PoorguyNick I think that its unfair to put all these artists in the same pot and compare them... ritchie is technical hard rock scaler with more studies on music, page is simple pentatonic-improvising-player with better sound engineering ability and hendrix was the guy that chewed his strings along with the wah effects and the psychedelic tune... :P they are all great and i wish we all be given the courage to transform our ideas into music in our time, just like they did in theirs :)

  • @PoorguyNick I wouldn't go as far as you did because Page also had awesome songwriting and acoustic chops which, for me, offset his sometimes sloppy playing. However, I would agree that RB is the more polished player and certainly no slouch in the songwriting department either. And lets not forget Jeff Beck who also knows his way around a stratocaster.

  • @PoorguyNick Dont say that please, even talk, to know the real game of page thanks to boot...

  • @AZEIDJSKSQMM I've said it so many times, I'll say it agin........I have a very high respect for Page as well as for the whole band. The only thing here that drives me crazy is him bein' overrated. If I take, for example, just two albums ang compare them, I will end up laugh. I mean two albums from the same era (of both guitar palyers technical and musical accomplishment ). Take Houses Of The Holy and made in Japan. Find out where Blackmore stands and where Page ?

  • @PoorguyNick page is not a soloer. the world is so stupid. would you call les paul an overrated guitarist? his chops werent the fastest. but they were way better than any shit played now that is all just sweep picking shit. jimmy should be a rhythm player. he has great riffs. great chops. great sound.

  • @frankenstrat25 steve how's a better guitarist than all three, but who gives a shit, end of

  • @louisalive indeed. most famous guitarists are not the best the best are always the people that noone has heard of

  • @PoorguyNick Page is hardly overrated.... bias Purple fans...pshh

Blackmore didn't write Physical Graffiti, nuff said

  • @louisalive He is overrated like you won`t believe it. Don`t tell me the Rolling Stone list is fare ? You know what...... the problem with all of you guys is that you think the World consists of US only. That's hardly the case though.

  • @PoorguyNick "you guys"..? who are talking about man... and who is 'US' if you mean the states, I'm far from a yank, and so is paige, they're an english band... I don't give a shit about lists or opinions, it's just a fact that he's brilliant

  • @PoorguyNick

men, thats not true jimmy page is also a wonderful guitarist you dont know whats all about men you should learn a little bit more about music dude ;)

  • @PoorguyNick the most overrated guitar player ever is SLASH, no doubt!!!

  • @guitartur I don`t know man......i don`t know. What I know is ........there are way too many jokers in front of Blackmore (on The Rollingstone List) that all this makes me lough. If I`m not mistaken even poor Jerry Garcia is listed in front of Blackmore..... ? Comparing oranges with pumpkins :)

  • @PoorguyNick You have my red point for today !! Congrats.

  • @guitartur

yes but there is clapton as well

  • @guitartur god i hate when people say that! he is one of the greatest guitar players ever and only fuckin purists consider him overrated because he did some stuff with fergie, guitar hero and " non rock n roll" stuff.....

  • @slimyesli not purists people who actually open their mind and listen to other guitarists and realise, wait... slash isnt that great, or original never has been

  • @danophile07 well you arent sensible to his playing then. cause i think the exact oposite but its ok

  • @slimyesli you would you sheep

  • @danophile07 why not

  • @guitartur slash is not overrated... he made some fantastic music and didn't care about speed.. he made his own sound and thats why people like him..

  • no WAY!!! Blackmore is the best!!

  • @PoorguyNick You sure don't get it, do you? I have seen them many times live and love them both, but musically? Ritchie is great, but he hasn't exactly invented anything out of the realm of good old Ludvig van B. has he? Jimmy OTOH went to places unknown to any man and took some of us there with him. Still I love to see Ritchie whenever I can, even with Blackmore's Night, though I preferred to see him up front with DP or Rainbow. Ritchie and Jimmy live and long may they live!

  • @PoorguyNick The most underrated must be Glenn Tipton, Judas Priest. An incredible guitarist!

  • @kranen1

    agreed.

  • @plijevo No one can play like anyone, everyone has their own style

  • @plijevo well that is what makes the difference between a musician from the heart and from the head! You can copy stuff from the head but nothing that comes from the heart!

  • @plijevo amen to that

  • Men, don't talk too much bullshit publicly! I know that supporting an idol is something that turns out our mind but you have to know clearly, at least, a little about the subject you're talking about. Page, Beck, Clapton, and others guitarrists not so famous as they are have their untouchable heritage on the evolution of the music and in the use of guitar and other acessories.

  • Hendrix, fortunatelly, was, is, and always will be, under any one of them. Like Pete Townshend once said: "He was a force of Nature".

  • @plijevo yes this is true because if anyone could play like him he would be ritchie blackmore no.2 or a clone or something the point is every huge guitarist plays with his own style that's why he's HUGE!

  • @plijevo THANKS CAPTAIN OBVIOUS LOL

  • @plijevo i can

  • @plijevo Try David Gilmour...

  • @plijevo You obviously have never seen Jimi Hendrix! I have seen Hendrix, Blackmore and Page! Hendrix was light years ahead of both! He mastered feedback which is a feat nobody to this day has accomplished! That is why he is voted by fans and musicians as the best ever! I do like Blackmore though but he is basic compared to Hendrix. Everyone is! If you watch them perform you can see the difference! Hendrix had so many different sounds and his showmanship is unparallelled!

  • @gbolt619 Did you ever get into Uli Jon Roth Scorpions era? He was Hendrix meets Blackmore on guitar.

  • Ritchie лучший!!!!!! Великий!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It is only crying, not singing

  • No one can play like Ritchie!!!

  • @MihranTamrazian of course there are a few rascals....heard of clapton, hendrix or eddie?

  • @jaraneda Jimmy?

  • @jagex3000 yes?

  • @jaraneda I meant Jimmy Page can too.

  • I can´t believe how stupid some of the commentaries are. Burn will always be better with the people who participated in the original recording - Coverdale and Hughes. On the other hand, other Purple´s classics will always be better with the members who recorded them in the first place - Smoke on the Water and Highway Star are better with Gillian and Glover, for instance.

  • The recording is original but the video is edited from "California Jam".

  • @Sneixx No it's not. It's from London. Definitely not California Jam.

  • It was not edited from California Jam. In California Jam, Burn opened the concert during the day. This video is during the night...

  • @Sneixx No, it's not from CalJam. It's from London. It's even out on DVD by now.

  • Blackmore only did two Lps with Coverdale/Hughes... Burn was great - Stormbringer had Blackmore itching to try something different and didn't play up to his usual efforts/solos ... if he put more into the line up he has instead of changing it for practically every LP, maybe things would've worked better

  • Ian was betta !

  • @demmylowther No, Coverdale was beta. Gillan is the stable release!

    LOL

  • David Coverdale sounds a bit like Joe Cocker in this vid. I've heard he wanted to be a singer in some band Joe Cocker left in the early 70's but finally he got in Purple. Purple really wanted to make band with Paul Rodgers but Paul said no so they needed a deep bluesy voice for this album.

  • Coverdale and Hughes didn't gave their best on the Burn tour, they took Purple at the Storbringer tour and were at their best on the Come Taste The Band tour IMO. Coverdale was good at the start but at the end of Purple he was fucking God!!!

  • This is a horrible performance.

  • The Best Line Up Ever.

  • Jeez... i just hate their 'acting' on the stage. Almost glamrock.

Gillan and Glover were much much better.

  • wow this is amazing all of the deep purple singers are great but in my opinion of all of them gillan is the worst of them. don't get me wrong he's still a good singer but coverdale is better hughes is better and joe lynn turner is better. there i said it oh my goodness how could i possible say that joe lynn turner is better then ian gillan well i did and i have heard both of them do black night and child in time and joe lynn turner sounds way better to me but that's just my opinion for you.

  • @DPBESTSINGERJLT How can anyone listen to THESE vocals and talk about how bad Gillan was?

The vocals in this live performance are just awful.

I saw Gillan many times live in Concert and at his worst he was twice as good as this.

  • @DURound well, I agree with DPBESTSINGERLJT, not that jtl was the best though :)

but these vocals are not awful, they are rather good, it's the mixing that is bad.

no, he is not. LIsten to him today and compare him with hughes or coverdale.

Everything that made gillan special is GONE. He cant do child in time, barely highway star. His voice is shot and gone in the higher register.

  • @leppardsnake Sure. These vocals are rather good.... FOR COVERDALE.. but for a really good singer? No way.

And its not just the mixing. He is flat and weak when he needs to be strong.

Yes. Gillan is not the singer he used to be. But Coverdale is even worse than Gillan now. And in their prime, Coverdale wasn't fit to touch Gillan's mike.

The Album version of Mistreated, is one of my top 3 fav DP tunes

  • @DURound well, last time I saw a list of greatest rock vocalist, ("judges" where experts, musicians and so forth) coverdale ended BEFORE gillan for that matter. We just have different tastes, to me Coverdale is was and always will be far more superior than gillan for vocals. And btw, last dp top 20 record 1987. All WS records top 10 since 1980 ;)

Coverdale is not worse, coverdale is much better. Gillan is a shadow of what he used to be. Oh, he was better then as well ;)

  • @leppardsnake Coverdale is just awful now days. Gillan has some voice, but not the voice he once had. Coverdale can barely croak out a song. I am serious.

As for your list, its kinda "meh". Lists are cheap, biased and "Flavor of the day".

Yes. I have listened to Mistreated on as many live versions as I can find. None of them are as good as the studio version. None.

  • @DURound I dont think he is awful at all. Far from it, he is still great. Saw him two times in 2008. Well gillan is horrible today.. to me at least.

well.. I dont think you apprechiate good blues rock vocalists :) you might be to used to the gillan-type of singing.

None, well, I'd say that the california jam version is 10 timmes better than the studio one.

and it shows in the fact that coverdale/whitesnake has had more success with live records

  • @leppardsnake Nope, I don't think Gillan was the greatest singer. He was extremely good at a few songs, but not that good at most songs. And he was not that good for very long. But Coverdale was worse, always needed a studio to sound good while in Purple. I admit he got technicaly good for a while in Whitesnake, but not in Purple. However, I think as a band, overall, Whitesnake sucks Purple's ass. But whitesnake was definitely more pop and more commercial.

  • @DURound I wouldn't call whitesnake pop at all.

It's just david has always written love songs, and that's it. That's what he likes to do.

  • @leppardsnake Well, whitesnake is pop to me. Radio filler.

  • @DURound you consider all "love songs" pop?

  • @leppardsnake I have not heard all the love songs that there are, but I can't immediately think of a love song that is not pop. There may be some. More importantly, if it is marketed for radio play and tv play for the mass audience, then I consider it pop.

  • @leppardsnake I think Coverdale needs a studio to sound good at all.

  • @leppardsnake

These guys are in their 60's now... Some have ravaged their vocal cords with drink and cigarettes..Some have had major vocal cord damage and surgeries. For the fact alone, that these guys are still willing to come out of their comfortable family lifestyles to write great new music and tour for their fans says a lot! Both Gillan and Coverdale are amazing. Different styles..I love Klaus Meine and Geddy Lee, as well - but in live shows -are harder for them now...

  • @TheTraci1968 well listen to hughes today then.

  • @DURound when coverdale opened for DP in the seventies Lord was so impressed that he asked coverdale for his phone number (although he did not have one :P) in case "this gillan thing wouldnt work out".. A few years later Paice heard the tape and was as taken by his voice as Lord.

Glad you like mistreated, excellent song. But you had to say album version. I think coverdale is a live vocalist more than a studio one, as is glenn for that matter.

  • @leppardsnake especially mistreated.. that's a LIVE song to me.. just my opinion though.

  • @DURound Here are the lists in full:

    Best Singer:

    01. Robert Plant (LED ZEPPELIN)

    02. Freddie Mercury (QUEEN)

    03. Paul Rodgers (FREE, BAD COMPANY)

    04. David Coverdale (DEEP PURPLE, WHITESNAKE)

    05. Ian Gillan (DEEP PURPLE)

apparently it was 3500 UK fans that had voted. there must have been another list done by critics and famous musicians then.

But still.. Coverdale ended up at no 4 there, gillan no 5 :)

    source: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4669597.stm

  • @leppardsnake Disagree with this list. Robert plant #1 come on. Even on a good day Plant was no match for Gillan or any of these vocalists.

  • @Drumguy1988 I dont live the list either, I'd have Coverdale on no 1 and hughes on no 2, but it aint gonna happen :P

Robert Plant was great though, I wouldnt put him first either, but he was great in his prime (as was gillan, coverdale, hughes, dio, and so on as well) imo

  • David sounds like he has a hot potato in his mouth...

  • wow, they really suck live!

  • @jonathanspan

I don 't see how it sucks... It is vintage recorded footage on YouTube. I would rather see this live today than most of the garbage out there..... $80 for Disturbed tickets??!! Come on,

even my 15 year old son agrees with me on this......

  • @TheTraci1968 oh yeah let's not mix chocolate with poop here, I aggree deep purple are gods, just, they seem to have taken too much ketamine or something in this recording :)

  • Glenn Hughes is awesome!! Excellent line up.

  • I really want to get into Deep Purple but I cant stand Ian Gillian's constant high pitched wailing. So I thought I could get into this line-up of Purple, then I realize the singer is the guy from Whitesnake...so no go man

  • then dont listen to them Gillian is got one of the best voices in rock i think he is better then plant

  • @cheifguggletram Look for a Video called "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" then pay attention to Blackmore. And look for an original album cut of "Speed King". Ignore the vocals and listen to the guitar.

  • @cheifguggletram Douchebag.

  • @cheifguggletram just because he was in Whitesnake, you dont want to listen to what he did before whitesnake ? :P

  • @cheifguggletram

Whitesnake in the late 1980's MTV era is a very poor representation of the band. He recorded several blues/hard rock albums beginning in 1977. After DP, Coverdale was considered great enough to get his own stuff going. He writes his own stuff. Had a great band going....Even Jon Lord and Ian Paice played with him for a bit.....Using MTV and an artist's bad business decision in a changing music industry does not mean a band sucks... Gillan is a god!

  • @TheTraci1968 Sorry, I just don't find anything I've heard by Deep Purple anything else but mediocre. They're all great instrumentalists but their songs do nothing for me.

  • haha the fans are wearing suits!! wtf!

  • @oliplaysbass It's a formal occasion and one must dress accordingly.

  • Gillan is my favorite Purple vocalist, but Stormbringer is my favorite album....weird...

  • MK 3 Deep Purple, Lord, Coverdale, Paice, Blackmore, Hughes, in my opinion this line-up was just as good as the MK 2 Line-up with Gillan and Roger, it was when Blackmore left the band Deep Purple began to lose there grip and fall apart, not that Bolin is a bad guitarist, but the drugs ruined it al for him, an Deep Purple, same goes for Hughes, who started using drugs in 1975, the year Blackmore left, MK 2 and 3 where the best Deep Purple Line-ups in my opinion ;) .

  • @kissarmy305 what about MK 1, they were awesome

  • @OniLink97 MK 1 sure was great, I think that a few of Deep Purple's best songs came from that era, April, Anthem, The Shield, Mandrake Root and Wring that Neck are great songs, especially April that can easly one of the best as if not the best song Deep Purple ever made, if not the best than it sure is the most creative one. ;).
