ok, had to throw my 2 cents in, yes john was pulled to 60, yes it does have brakes, and no, this is not his record 152.284mph. and one turn of the crank is 97 feet of travel. I know, i was the mechanic that restored improved and modified the bike for jon. I was also vp of howard performance at the time!
Actually, he IS being pulled to speed and then maintains it. This is NOT a HPV record because they state that you have to propel yourself 100% of the time. I am not saying I can do it, but there are people that can. It is for this reason I am boycotting the Tucson Century.
@beerman1957 It is a single speed double reduction fixed gear (420 gear inches!!!) no brakes! The bike travels OVER 100 feet for each turn of the pedals., covers a mile in 24 seconds (about 50 pedal strokes). So it CAN NOT be ridden slow. He was pulled to 60mph released and accelerated under his own power from there. I know John and have seen the bike myself.
Where can we find the album containing this song? We just bought the 45, "Bill Come Swim With Me," as well as Mack Davis' 8-track tape, entitled "Songs To Pull Your Pud By," and we just need a couple more really inspirational songs in order to round out our party CD. So... if you know where we can get it, please drop us a line.

Yeah but the wind resistance shield and the towing to 80mph disqualifies the whole thing as any sort of record. and the shield car is actually creating a vacuum pulling him along...pretty LAME, not to mention the gay asss music, hehe.
He was pulled to 80mph because it would take too long to get to that speed. He went on to reach 150mph. I think the current record is 166.94mph if it hasn't been broken yet.

@beerman1957 You're boycotting because of the ebikes going into the event?

topbox media are filming the design, build and first land speed record attempt for a 100% wooden bicycle.
"No bolts or screws, just wood and glues!" as Michael Thompson the bike's creator says.
View our profile to watch a short teaser to raise awareness and help raise some money for the charity "Shelter Box."
The resulting documentary will I'm certain be very, very entertaining...

Being pulled by a car is hardly a record. To actually own a record, try doing it unassisted. FAIL on this, John and you should know better.
beerman1957 1 year ago
@beerman1957 he's not being pulled, he's drafting. let's see YOU try it.

@beerman1957 hes drifting, not being pulled -.- impossible to reach such speed with wind resistance

@rotagen5 This is a drafting record then :p there is a normal speed record which is unassisted.

the gear ratio is 1 : 21.52! you pedal for one revolution, the wheel turns itself 21.52 revolutions!
