There's something very wrong about the picture produced in this video. You can tell clearly from shadows and activities that it was filmed at different times and yet all the light and colors seem to be exactly the same reference point - like the same perfect twilight moment! There is no doubt this is a great camera, but this video (audio ok, though to aggresive at start) does not do it justice. The raw footage or something closer to it would have been more useful.
i have all the settings you had but once uploaded onto imovie, it wont let me set 1080p? but only 720p and even then some videos that are 720p from hfs200 seem way better than mine? anybody have a clue?
i'm lookin to get a camera to shoot my own music videos, i'm tryin to make them as good as i can without spending too much money, i really only wanted to spend 600$ on a camera but am willing to spend up to a grand if it is worth it, i would really rather get a cameracorder then a professional camera for size reasons mostly... i went to bestbuy an see the canon hf s20 an it caught my eye, i'm just tryin to do as much research as possible before i spend that kind of money on it, what do you think
I got one problem, tough. I'm a musician, and I heard some of these cameras have a automatic volume function (to avoid volume distortion) that cannot be disabled.
In my case, I need to be able to connect an external audio source (mixer or mic) and its important that i can control the volume manually.
in this camera, can I switch off this auto-volume control?
Thanks for the video!, this helped me make a decision! I love shooting video at night and this cam is not bad but its got some horrible blue overlay... I will have to skip this cam... thx for the videos
All the footage seen here is not the raw footage; every single shot was color-corrected except for 0:33. When the color correction was applied, most of the picture during the night seemed to have a bluish tint. Do not judge the performance of the camcorder based on the color correction. The raw footage is actually much brighter.
Please check out my second video to see raw (un-edited; original) footage during low light conditions. "City Night Life - Canon Vixia HF S10 / S11 Low Light". This video may be of a different camcorder, but the camcorders listed in both titles are identical in image quality.
This looks amazing. I have a hf s10, but obviously i need to study the ins and outs of it a bit more, didnt know it was capable of shooting such magnificent footage. If you can inbox me the settings you had this on... if you remember.
how long does it take you to upload a 32gb from flash card or uploading a few hours of video. when you upload to final cut or premiere or vegas how long does it take you to upload?

Hey great video, with some interesting compo's and light, I was just interested in knowing the name of the program you used to create the background soundtrack :)
HiiDefinition, I love all your videos and they've helped me make my decision, I really want either a s200 or s100. I want to shoot tennis, from lots of different angles and also make some short silent films. Is there much of a difference in video between the s200 and s100? I don't think there is from what I've read, but i've no idea about camcorders. Do you think it would be good to shoot tennis and make short films?
The S100 and S200 are identical in image quality, the only difference is the native 24p and the improved image stabilization. From what you mentioned above, it should do just fine for your needs.
@HiiDefinition what suggestions do you have when uploading HD so that you do not lose quality? is it as simple as using a good program like final cut in HD?
Hi there!!! Hey do you think this camera would work for me to film weddings as a bussiness? I'd add a light and a wireless mic to it but I'd like to hear your oppinion, see if you've used it in any events. Also I'd like to know if you have printed any images taken directly from the video and what's your oppinion about the noise and the "lack" of wide angle since it's a 43mm lense, a lot of people mention those in negative reviews. Thanks for your help, it definitely will come handy!!!

Well, if you are looking to shoot weddings, which are usually low-light, I recommend checking out the DSLR's, but this camcorder would do just fine. Anyway, I've personally used it in some events, and its performance is excellent. Also the lack of wide angle was compensated for with the wide angle lens that I bought (read description). Anyway, like I said before, if you are looking for lack of noise and printing out stills, than I recommend checking out the DSLR's.
No, I agree, now that I look back it, but I guess it also has to do with personal taste. Some people like it, and others don't. I'm sure if you compare this video to my recent ones, you will probably see that the color correction looks a lot better. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Thank you! Anyway, I created the track myself using the loops in garageband. However I will say it definitely isn't my best work since I batched this one up quickly to post the video.
I wish I could, but I'm currently busy working on multiple films and projects with other indie filmmakers. If you wish, I could color correct your videos for you to your taste, however that will come at a small fee. If you are still interested, email me @: hiidefinition@gmail.com

Truly excellent. I need a small "nippy" camera to complement my XH A1 - WITH an EVF !!. I think tomorrow - inspired by your films - I shall buy. Thank you very much.
Hey, great vid! I just purchased the hf s20, and I'm loving. But I'm having a problem importing the 24p into my mac. How do I go about doing that? Do I need Final Cut? iMovie won't accept the 24p videos... Thanks for the help.
I am confused between Sony HDR-XR550V, Canon VIXIA HF S21, Panasonic HD 700 HS. Dont know which one to buy. I want some thing solid great quality great features but simple to use. Money is not an issue if I'm getting top notch quality cam. Any one with expert advice out there which will be the best pick mentioned above
just want to make sure, so Canon Vixia HF S21 / S20 / S200 are all compatible with Final Cut Express 4? any problems encountered while transferring files to Mac laptop?
also, do you know if the HF S11, HF 20, and HF 200 support Final Cut Express 4 too?
The .MTS files are converted to Quicktime based format through the log and transfer option, where files from these camcorders are flawlessly transferred and converted into Final Cut Express in one step. Some programs do not support this format (.MTS) because the codec is incomplete in frame information; which is why most programs are quicktime based, since quicktime codec provides complete information. After Effects for example has a hard time working with .MTS.
If you want image quality over features, go with the 550D. Though these DSLR's are limited in features such as audio, gain, and in other cases, exposure. Also the rolling shutter is a huge disadvantage, you will almost always need to use a tripod while following a fast moving object, but still, the image quality is unbeatable.
really nice video, nice shots, nice editing and of course nice camcorder! what's the best format to burn it to leave it in original quality? if one burn it to a bluray disc would it retain it original quality? In your opinion what the best program to edit such films? thanks again
Thanks, your comments are appreciated. Anyway if you were going to burn a high quality film onto a blu-ray disc that has such massive space, I would probably go with uncompressed formats, such as PNG or Uncompressed 10 bit. Though blu-ray usually uses H.264, which has little or no loss in image quality. The best program to edit these films would probably have to be Adobe After Effects (AE CS5), however I use a combination of Final Cut Pro 7 and AE CS5 for importing and editing purposes.
The result looks great. Congrats. I have this camcorder. am travelling around the world and only shoots in MXP 24 MPs, most of the time Cine Mode except when the environment is very dynamic. I have to transfer my videos on a regular basis to an external hard drive as I fill up the 64 GB quickly. When I'm back I plan to buy a proper edtiing SW. Sometimes I had to use some pretty old computers in cyber cafes to transfer to hard drive. During this transfer, could it be that the quality degrades?
I used auto focus 90% of the time, and in low light conditions the autofocus still worked well, but it took a little more compared to normal shooting conditions.
what editing software do you use? i just got vegas movie studio 9 and can't seem to get my edited videos to finalize and be able to be uploaded into 1080p on youtube, but if i take a video straight from my hf s20 to youtube it looks great. you can watch the video of my cat in amazing 1080p but i have and edited video of me getting a tattoo that is no where near as good in quality. hopefully you can help!
What are the settings that you film with on the hfs20? I shut off all auto features and have manual exposure focus and white balance. I set the recording mode to MXP 24 Mbps, and the frame rate at 60i. Lastly, I set the simultaneous recording to super fine 3264x1840 on S and LW. Your film looks great and I want to get the best out of this cam. Thanks again for all you help.
You know that simultaneous recording isn't for video, right? It doesn't matter what setting you use, whether it be fine, or normal. That is just for taking pictures while recording... Anyway, to get film like results you should know the standard frame rate for professional films is 24p, not 60i. I also use Cine mode because it handles low light and outdoor situations much better. Finally using all manual functions isn't exactly the right idea, because it is hard to control it all at once.
That program should be able to import files, thoughI don't have that program so I'm not sure. I'm guessing that program is not compatible with .MTS files? If not, the only thing I can say is try using a converter. I'm sure eventually you'll find something, but do you have a MAC or a PC?
I just purchased the canon hfs20. How are you transferring the 1080p video from the internal flash drive onto the computer? I am using the imagemixer 3 software that came with the camera, but when I export it, it only allows me to set it at 1280 by 720. How do I get the full 1920 by 1080? If you could explain the process you go through that, would be great. Thanks man.
Well first off, the only way I would ever have made this video is by using an editing program, such as Final Cut Pro 7 or Express 4.0.1, and not any of the "cheap" software that came with the camcorder. I imported all my files through these programs. If you wan't film like results, you're going to have to spend some more money and find a software that is compatible wit your camcorder.
Full 1920x1080 HD is always 16:9, while the SD formats are usually 4:3. So yes, this camcorder, and almost every other camcorder that shoots in HD, is 16:9.
hey guys i just bought this camera yesterday and when i put the settings up i cant get it to look like this? and another question what settings should i put it as to upload 10min videos for youtube with the best quality but not hitting the limit of space used?
Well you have to understand that this entire video was color corrected, and no matter what you do, it will never look like this unless you edit it. Anyway, what do you mean by "settings" to upload a 10 minute video? Camera Settings or exporting settings? Also if so, what editing program do you use.
@HiiDefinition i just started using programs like Final cut Adobe premiere pro so so im new and i ment for camera setting and do you have any suggestions to where i can learn more about the programs?
Well for camera settings, you should use Cine Mode, 24F, MXP (24MBPS), and Custom Settings, where you should put the color depth all the way, sharpness all the way, brightness in the center, and contrast at the lowest. To get tutorials for the programs, you should explore with the program over a month to get a real grasp on the program. Usually the tutorials at Apple are really basic, so you will have to teach yourself how to do complex stuff.
Way way too dark footage. I'd bet your screen is not color and gamma corrected, and set to too high brightness. All I see on my calibrated screen is overall black video with some dots of light. Even the day footage looks muddy. I'm not trying to bring you down, just saying because you should know, and look into it, so you can continue your videomaking in the best fashion possible.
I will agree that some shots were too dark, however other low light shots were actually impressive for this kind of camcorder. Like I've explained below, I color corrected this video in a rush, and I didn't even realize that the day video was so unsaturated, anyway, I welcome criticism, it's the only way you can get better!
I liked the music! It has a Tangerine Dream feel & I'm a fan.
How did you compose and record that?
I have a 4 yr old JVC with a hard-drive. It does 16:9 but not in HD, and is bad in low light. So, I'm thinking of yours or the Pana TM770. It's mainly for YouTube, so I'm just being a techie to reach so high in features. But, I want to keep my next 'corder for a while.
Nice video, there are definitely several memorable shots in there. I like the music too, it has kind of a "Koyaanisquatsi" vibe. The day stuff looks a little too desaturated for my taste, but at least it's a different look. I would recommend using a tripod also. Good stuff overall, this makes me want an hf s20 really bad lol
Yeah I know, I was on vacation and I didn't really have any time to set up a tripod, anyway, check out my other, more dedicated low light video if the some of the shots were too jerky.
I got the Canon Vixia HF S20 and am wondering what setting you would recommend for recording horses. I am using action mode and on the camera everything is great, but as soon as I edit it using Sony Vegas Pro 9 and save the vid it has a double like effect on a lot of the vid. I really want to get rid of this...so what setting do you think would be best? I'd really appreciate any help/advice! Thanks!!
I like the video and recently purchased vixia hf s20. look forward to trying low light. suggest improved image stablization on the above movie. It's jerky in several places. Final Cut Express doesn't have stabilization. I've read about using IMovie09 for stablization of clips and then exporting to Final Cut. (I use both IMovie09 and Final Cut).
Yeah, I didn't use a tripod at the time, but if you check out my other s21 low light video, you can see the steadiness of the video has improved a lot more.
I made the music in a rush, if you don't like this music try my other Canon Vixia Hf S21 Low Light Video, I tried to make sure the music was better...
@HiiDefinition I've been looking at the samson zoom and stuff like that because I'm not seated close to the stage at all I'm section 204 and thats like in the middle of the theatre so I'm gonna need something that can pick up the singing, guitars and the drums with great quality and I know that just using the built in mics that are already built in the cams just don't work. So I'll definitly be looking into the info you gave me. And again thank you very much for all the great help.
Would this camera be good for shooting concert footage. the place i'm going is a indoor theatre. And i'm going to be seated in the 204 area. I need a good camera cause I want to film the whole concert. its my first. so any and all help is great. thanks for your time... Also if you know of any good sound equipment.
Yeah, the low light capabilities were actually really amazing, anyway, if you're looking for state of the art sound, you can buy the Canon SM-V1 5.1 Channel Surround Sound microphone that is compatible with this camcorder.
I can't say for sure, because canon advertises "Native 24p" but if you check the specifications, it say "24p (shot in 60i)". This means that the footage was recorded in 60i, but motion blurs were added to give it a "24p" feel. I guess if you really wanted to know, you would have to research a bit.
@HiiDefinition I took the hfs20 in my hand at futureshop and I looked at the frame rate settings and saw two 24p modes. One with 24F and one with 24PF and I don't think Canon would put two options if they're the same. Could you send me two 1 second videos shot at 24F and 24PF in the original format (.mts)? I'll be able to know if it's really native 24p.
No, I distorted the picture to a 2.35 aspect ratio, just like how a anamorphic lens distorts the picture to get the correct aspect ratio. It may seem like the wrong idea to distort or "bend" the picture, however it has many benefits vs cropping like getting the entire picture and an increase in the depth of field. It has been shown to increase some quality.
I did use a wide angle lens, which helped a bit, but the finishing touches I did was done in editing. If you have Final Cut Pro or Express, this can easily be done.
Does the colors represent the real colors or have a tiny changed?
Im searching for a camera cost 1000$ top, and i noticed their is an canon camcorders using a CMOS lans with 8.56 MG with 1/2.4 Lens and on the other side their is an Panasonic camcorders that uses 3 CMOS 1/4.1 lens with only 3.4 (or so) MG
so my Q is what do you recommend? a 1 CMOS lens or 3??
an other Q i got is what the deference between the s21 s20 and s200
cos the 200 got a DIGIC DV III Image Processor while the other does not
The clips used in this video ARE COLOR CORRECTED. Anyway, I'm going to assume that you mixed up the 1/2.4 Image Sensor with what you said: "1/2.4 Lens and on the other..." Remember, the bigger the lens diameter and the higher the megapixels, the better the image quality. However it has been shown that using three image sensors may increase lowlight capabilities, but these Canon camcorders have one of the best performances in low light conditions.
@HiiDefinition yes, i mixed it up by a mistake but, the problem i have choosing a camera between those 4 or 2 because if i choose taking the canon i believe i would take the S200 coz its the new model and got all the Features of the oldest molds...
but heres the catch, you just said that the 3MOS is better in capturing night light and real life, but also you said that the CANON have one of the best low light capturing... Im a bit confused pleas explain your self...
do you use the uv flitters even at night too

Also I'd like to know if you have printed any images taken directly from the video and what's your oppinion about the noise and the "lack" of wide angle since it's a 43mm lense, a lot of people mention those in negative reviews. Thanks for your help, it definitely will come handy!!!
omonroy234 1 year ago
Well, if you are looking to shoot weddings, which are usually low-light, I recommend checking out the DSLR's, but this camcorder would do just fine. Anyway, I've personally used it in some events, and its performance is excellent. Also the lack of wide angle was compensated for with the wide angle lens that I bought (read description). Anyway, like I said before, if you are looking for lack of noise and printing out stills, than I recommend checking out the DSLR's.

it sucks.color is dead and white balance is off the mark dude.
pancham4743 1 year ago
No, I agree, now that I look back it, but I guess it also has to do with personal taste. Some people like it, and others don't. I'm sure if you compare this video to my recent ones, you will probably see that the color correction looks a lot better. Everyone has to start somewhere.

@HiiDefinition His review was a bit harsh lol.anyways what lens did you use?? I have the exact same camcorder.

Yeah I guess, anyway, for this video I used the canon WD H58 wide angle lens, which is also in the description.

just want to make sure, so Canon Vixia HF S21 / S20 / S200 are all compatible with Final Cut Express 4? any problems encountered while transferring files to Mac laptop?
also, do you know if the HF S11, HF 20, and HF 200 support Final Cut Express 4 too?
RichCreationsRC 1 year ago
All of the Canon Vixia's work flawlessly with Final Cut Express 4, I encountered no problems.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@RichCreationsRC Yeah, they make .mts files. Final Cut should open them. Premiere opens them and Sony Vegas 9.0 as well (8.0 doesnt!)
TheCentrix 1 year ago
The .MTS files are converted to Quicktime based format through the log and transfer option, where files from these camcorders are flawlessly transferred and converted into Final Cut Express in one step. Some programs do not support this format (.MTS) because the codec is incomplete in frame information; which is why most programs are quicktime based, since quicktime codec provides complete information. After Effects for example has a hard time working with .MTS.

anyone want to advise me on this vs 550D?
chargers218 1 year ago
If you want image quality over features, go with the 550D. Though these DSLR's are limited in features such as audio, gain, and in other cases, exposure. Also the rolling shutter is a huge disadvantage, you will almost always need to use a tripod while following a fast moving object, but still, the image quality is unbeatable.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
really nice video, nice shots, nice editing and of course nice camcorder! what's the best format to burn it to leave it in original quality? if one burn it to a bluray disc would it retain it original quality? In your opinion what the best program to edit such films? thanks again
ifotofar 1 year ago
Thanks, your comments are appreciated. Anyway if you were going to burn a high quality film onto a blu-ray disc that has such massive space, I would probably go with uncompressed formats, such as PNG or Uncompressed 10 bit. Though blu-ray usually uses H.264, which has little or no loss in image quality. The best program to edit these films would probably have to be Adobe After Effects (AE CS5), however I use a combination of Final Cut Pro 7 and AE CS5 for importing and editing purposes.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
The result looks great. Congrats. I have this camcorder. am travelling around the world and only shoots in MXP 24 MPs, most of the time Cine Mode except when the environment is very dynamic. I have to transfer my videos on a regular basis to an external hard drive as I fill up the 64 GB quickly. When I'm back I plan to buy a proper edtiing SW. Sometimes I had to use some pretty old computers in cyber cafes to transfer to hard drive. During this transfer, could it be that the quality degrades?
DavidAgnolon 1 year ago
I don't believe that transferring will degrade the quality, unless of course you convert it during the process, but no change should occur.

TheDreamFilmer 1 year ago
You know that simultaneous recording isn't for video, right? It doesn't matter what setting you use, whether it be fine, or normal. That is just for taking pictures while recording... Anyway, to get film like results you should know the standard frame rate for professional films is 24p, not 60i. I also use Cine mode because it handles low light and outdoor situations much better. Finally using all manual functions isn't exactly the right idea, because it is hard to control it all at once.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
Thanks man, I was able to get the full HD to work. I didn't realize that I could just copy over the .mts files and use those in the adobe software.

ok thanks, i have adobe promier. so ill give that a shot.
TheDreamFilmer 1 year ago
That program should be able to import files, thoughI don't have that program so I'm not sure. I'm guessing that program is not compatible with .MTS files? If not, the only thing I can say is try using a converter. I'm sure eventually you'll find something, but do you have a MAC or a PC?
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
I just purchased the canon hfs20. How are you transferring the 1080p video from the internal flash drive onto the computer? I am using the imagemixer 3 software that came with the camera, but when I export it, it only allows me to set it at 1280 by 720. How do I get the full 1920 by 1080? If you could explain the process you go through that, would be great. Thanks man.
TheDreamFilmer 1 year ago
Well first off, the only way I would ever have made this video is by using an editing program, such as Final Cut Pro 7 or Express 4.0.1, and not any of the "cheap" software that came with the camcorder. I imported all my files through these programs. If you wan't film like results, you're going to have to spend some more money and find a software that is compatible wit your camcorder.

KingCesar10121 1 year ago

hey guys i just bought this camera yesterday and when i put the settings up i cant get it to look like this? and another question what settings should i put it as to upload 10min videos for youtube with the best quality but not hitting the limit of space used?
janthony227 1 year ago
Well you have to understand that this entire video was color corrected, and no matter what you do, it will never look like this unless you edit it. Anyway, what do you mean by "settings" to upload a 10 minute video? Camera Settings or exporting settings? Also if so, what editing program do you use.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition i just started using programs like Final cut Adobe premiere pro so so im new and i ment for camera setting and do you have any suggestions to where i can learn more about the programs?
janthony227 1 year ago
Well for camera settings, you should use Cine Mode, 24F, MXP (24MBPS), and Custom Settings, where you should put the color depth all the way, sharpness all the way, brightness in the center, and contrast at the lowest. To get tutorials for the programs, you should explore with the program over a month to get a real grasp on the program. Usually the tutorials at Apple are really basic, so you will have to teach yourself how to do complex stuff.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
Way way too dark footage. I'd bet your screen is not color and gamma corrected, and set to too high brightness. All I see on my calibrated screen is overall black video with some dots of light. Even the day footage looks muddy. I'm not trying to bring you down, just saying because you should know, and look into it, so you can continue your videomaking in the best fashion possible.
webmatros 1 year ago
I will agree that some shots were too dark, however other low light shots were actually impressive for this kind of camcorder. Like I've explained below, I color corrected this video in a rush, and I didn't even realize that the day video was so unsaturated, anyway, I welcome criticism, it's the only way you can get better!
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition Also try turning up the gain when recording.

@HiiDefinition so it IS better than the sony...he asks if the canon is better or not and you say no
Gamer777777 1 year ago
The Canon Vixia HF S21 is better than the Sony HDR XR-550 because the Canon camcorder has a bigger lens and a larger megapixel sensor.

Thanks!!
SmallvilleFanatic600 1 year ago
I like the video and recently purchased vixia hf s20. look forward to trying low light. suggest improved image stablization on the above movie. It's jerky in several places. Final Cut Express doesn't have stabilization. I've read about using IMovie09 for stablization of clips and then exporting to Final Cut. (I use both IMovie09 and Final Cut).

Does it have real native 24p (23.976) ?
Thanks for reply!
Ersovideo 1 year ago
I can't say for sure, because canon advertises "Native 24p" but if you check the specifications, it say "24p (shot in 60i)". This means that the footage was recorded in 60i, but motion blurs were added to give it a "24p" feel. I guess if you really wanted to know, you would have to research a bit.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition I took the hfs20 in my hand at futureshop and I looked at the frame rate settings and saw two 24p modes. One with 24F and one with 24PF and I don't think Canon would put two options if they're the same. Could you send me two 1 second videos shot at 24F and 24PF in the original format (.mts)? I'll be able to know if it's really native 24p.
Thanks for reply
Ersovideo 1 year ago
did you crop to 2.40:1 from the 1.78:1?
cesarbrandi 1 year ago
No, I distorted the picture to a 2.35 aspect ratio, just like how a anamorphic lens distorts the picture to get the correct aspect ratio. It may seem like the wrong idea to distort or "bend" the picture, however it has many benefits vs cropping like getting the entire picture and an increase in the depth of field. It has been shown to increase some quality.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition How did you do that? Did you use any lenses in the HF-21?
cesarbrandi 1 year ago
I did use a wide angle lens, which helped a bit, but the finishing touches I did was done in editing. If you have Final Cut Pro or Express, this can easily be done.

Does the colors represent the real colors or have a tiny changed?
Im searching for a camera cost 1000$ top, and i noticed their is an canon camcorders using a CMOS lans with 8.56 MG with 1/2.4 Lens and on the other side their is an Panasonic camcorders that uses 3 CMOS 1/4.1 lens with only 3.4 (or so) MG
so my Q is what do you recommend? a 1 CMOS lens or 3??
an other Q i got is what the deference between the s21 s20 and s200
cos the 200 got a DIGIC DV III Image Processor while the other does not
ZrHFaN1 1 year ago
The clips used in this video ARE COLOR CORRECTED. Anyway, I'm going to assume that you mixed up the 1/2.4 Image Sensor with what you said: "1/2.4 Lens and on the other..." Remember, the bigger the lens diameter and the higher the megapixels, the better the image quality. However it has been shown that using three image sensors may increase lowlight capabilities, but these Canon camcorders have one of the best performances in low light conditions.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition yes, i mixed it up by a mistake but, the problem i have choosing a camera between those 4 or 2 because if i choose taking the canon i believe i would take the S200 coz its the new model and got all the Features of the oldest molds...
but heres the catch, you just said that the 3MOS is better in capturing night light and real life, but also you said that the CANON have one of the best low light capturing... Im a bit confused pleas explain your self...
