  • QUESTION! so if i have a yellow undertone should i use a cool brownish colour to contour so that it will look more natural on my skin? i'm MAC face and body C1

thank you. this video is amazing! xx

  • thank you for posting this video, im a budding freelancer so i need any and every bit of advice on any and everything that will be given lol love you girls, youre awesome and thanks again!

  • this's really help, thank you so much ;)

  • This video is very instructive,,, thank you for sharing the information.. please publish more of the basics of make-up.. much love

  • Your hair and skin look so healthy and beautiful! I actually like the pink hue of your skin, (mine is much the same). Often times, I find that I prefer my skin, (if it is free of breakouts), sans foundation. I like the pinkness of my skin to show...like your's, it looks glowy. Great vid! Informative!

  • in your video that you say you are going to do on this topic, can you please include brown skin tones,(pakistani/indian) too..thanks!

  • you mentioned blue ..

but under my eyes im abit yellow ..

  • I am trying to watch the exclusive tutorials on channel 4 but I cant. :(

Anyone else with the same problem?

Also, I am pretty sure I saw a new video from Sam in my subscriptions, I saved it to watch it later and now is gone. :(

Or I am going crazy :/

  • Looking healthy and gorgeous, hope you enjoyed your trip to paradise Nic, minus the exotic wildlife! :o)

  • @Beauty4Teen Then you cancel the cool out by using a warm concealer.

  • Extremely helpful thank you

  • @none604 You cannot conceal puffiness. You need to use an eye cream that de-puffs. Then try a yellow based concealer

  • @pixiwoo gossmakeupartist gave a tip to put a lighter coloured concealer just in the shadow the puffy undereye makes, tilting your head down helps to see the shadow, doing thisgives the illusion of no puffiness as the shadow is removed, but don't put the lighter concealer anywhere else otherwise it'll cancel out the effect. It works for me. Check out his vid to see it in action. Hope this helps.

  • Awesome video! I will get one for myself!!!! So helpful!!! :)

  • love your new eyebrows :)

  • i really love you tutorials

  • Ah the color wheel. I'm 18 and after some serious hair color mistakes (I went pink for a while, then an ugly red to cover it--mistake!) my hair dresser got it out...

So helpful! Thank you for doing this. And explaining that yellow foundations are cooler, that never clicked before.

  • LIARR, THE OPPOSITE OF BLUE IS YELLOW, the opposite of red/pink is green. i know that, i do hair and i use blue to counteract the yellow brassy tones. how is it that you ca cover a BLUE under eye circle with an ORANGE concealer, logically it should be yellow, but yellow doesnt work, orange does, WHY?

  • @MierAntonio The opposite of Blue is Orange but red will work.

The opposite of yellow is purple. The opposite of Green is red.

  • Finally!! this was so helpful! thank you :)

  • Great info, but somehow I'm confused on my own skintone.... I wear NW 25 in Studio Fix Fluid, and I've never had a problem with it, but sometimes it seems a bit too pink for me. Does this mean I should really be wearing NC? I've had only one MAC person assess my color, so perhaps they were wrong.....

  • @XSmashleyX87 Perhaps you need to offset the pink by setting it with a yellow toned powder. Try NC20/25 powder

  • Hey Nic! thanks for this it's a great help!!

  • since you used an NW30 under your eyes, is your foundation NC30????

  • Comment removed

  • i'm an indian and my skin tone is medium tan.... i'm having difficult in selecting the right foundation colour by myself.... i end up buying something darker than my tone or it ends up giving a white look to my face which looks odd for my medium tan skin... the sales people at the counter also are not that helpfull.... can you do a tutorial for buying foundation.... colud you also do more makeup tutorials for indian skin.....

  • so helpful! thank you :)

  • I went to bed with my hair wet last night, didn't brush it either. I just looked in the mirror... and Worzel Gummidge was staring back at me!! FAIL!

You're so lucky Nic, I have hair envy x

  • @loudanmolliefinn It wouldnt work for me either. Sam.

  • Yes it would be great if you guys would demonstrate/explain further with different skin tones. Even with different ethnicities as I come from a Mexican background.[: everyone has differences even being the same ethnicity though! thts why the whole skintone thing is so helpful. Thnk you.^_^

  • I really appreciate you making this video, very helpful!!!!

  • I found this very useful. Great video. You guys are very good at what you do. This video answered alot of my questions .Fantastic!!!

  • thank you so much, this has helped more than you will ever know.

  • Very nice video. But I have brown under eye circle, pinkish concealer doesn't work, just make my under eye look orange, what color of concealer should I use?

  • i have been a freelance mua for about 2 yrs now have taken numerous trainings and classes and this is by far the most helpful and useful information i have gotten regarding undertones. thanks so much

  • i appreciated this sooooooooooooooooooo much!

  • this video was helpful but how do i determine if my skin is warm or cool? it's tricky with me because some parts are yellowish and some are pinkish so i don't know...

  • @itzamarie14 Then you might have both. It is quite common. More than likely you fall in the middle.

  • I will be happy when you do the tutorial with Desiree because that kind of info is what I have been searching days for....I am wanting to know how to correct black women skin based on the cool/warm info you are giving out. Also as you were stating black women most of the time have several different shades in their face...being darker around hairline to lighter around the nose..etc. Please do this asap....Thanks

  • Thank you so much for doing this video because I am one of those people starting out so I am happy u did this

  • thank you thank you so much for explaining and for letting us know that ur going back to basic with ur new videos luv you and take care

  • i read in one of bobbi brown's books, her opinion is that pretty much all skin tones have a yellow undertone therefore yellow foundation would better suite all skin types as opposed to pink. that's why all her foundations are yellow toned. she reckons yellow toned foundation looks more natural and i tend to agree. what do you think?

  • @NicoleSarah2525 I think the foundations are a little too yellow for me but the concealers are great.

  • your tan looks great!

  • Thank you so much.

I'm of middle eastern origins and I was wondering if MAC actually sells that wheel so I can have it as a guide to dealing with different areas of my skin.

I used Channel's foundation in Sam's personal makeup video and it was fantastic! of course a darker tone. still the dark circles under my eyes are hard to cover. I guess I am in the yellow shades, however, can you tip me on some eye concealers that truly cover and look natural in the same time??

    Thanks

  • Very informative. I especially liked the reference to the fire and ice-I will never wonder about warm and cool tones again. Thank you! Also, you tan beautifully, hope you had a nice vacation.

  • Loved what you explained out here in this video. It would be more helpful if you could try and show a demo on Indian skin....complete makeup, from foundation to eye shadows to blushes, etc...what would be perfect for Indian skin tone.

  • sooo helpful!! omg thank you so much you teach so welllll !! thank you so much !!

  • I love all the info your giving, it really helped me!

  • awesome!

  • so... if you have purple-ish circles, what undertone should i use??

  • well i have a pinky skin tone, but when i used to wear a pink toned (warm) foundation, it looked like i had blush all over my face. it looked waaaay too pink and totally unnatural.

i find that cool foundations balance out the pink and look much better.

that clearly contradicts what you've said.. do you have any explanation for this?

  • @shanohu Perhaps the foundation was too dark. Perhaps you have slight rosacea, in which case the correct thing would be to correct the warmth in the skin by using a cool toned foundation.

  • Excellent! Thank you.

  • very informative tutorial!!

are you wearing the chanel j12 watch??

    thanks!!!

  • @shopaholic1925 No mine is by ice it was £50

  • @pixiwoo I bet you wish it was the J12 though, Nic.

    Sam. x

  • Thank you so much.

  • Damn damn damn, I understand this completely but I bought an NC concealer recently when I should have purchased an nw!

  • @KaleiCLG Take it back and swap it if you were badly advised.

  • What would be the best complimentary color for brown eyes? brown eyes seem like its the trickiest.

  • this is a great video that i have been waiting to watch and learn about! can you do a tutorial actually mixing these colors on people? it'll be great to see and learn this in action. =]

  • You look darker, it looks nice :) You look pretty with light skin too :)

  • awesome video, the best of all, soo interesting, love you girls, when I grow up I want to be as awesome as you ;D

    ciao

  • i feel like all the liquid foundations ive tried never quite work for me, i either end up looking jaundice, oompa-loompa-ish, washed out or slightly sunburned ? Because of this I've been sticking to just using tinted moisturizers and/or concealers but I would really like something with a higher coverage.

  • wow thanks!! it makes so much more sense now! i thought of the tones soo wrong be4 now everything makes sense

  • HI perhaps you can tell us what kind of cut you have in your hair, what do you ask your hairstylist to do? thanks

    Rose

  • wihc hair product are in your hair?

    shampoo conditionerr?

    serum?

  • So pink is considered a warm in foundation? I'm quite fair and my skin seems to change a lot, and my face seems to always have more of a pink tone cause my cheeks have a bit of a redness in them; compared to my body which seems to me to be more of a yellow tone. So when choosing foundations I need to pick warm tones? Like things with more of a pink undertone? Is that right? Or do I have to choose something with yellow and pink, like a neutral, cause of the rest of my skin?

  • You are so awesome. Thank you so much!

  • i was waiting for something about Indian women hahah thank you i tried orange and it work wonders... i think it's gonna fit into my routine !!!

  • OOMMGGG This is the best video on youtube! From you girls or anyone else! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Make more nerdy videos, they're incredible! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

  • would it be possible to do a video for foundations and powders that dont oxodize because that happens to me and i hate it!! also could you tell us some tips on how to work with people who have really bad skin and lots of acne scars and how to work with and cover those to make the skin look flawless

  • fact: going to sleep with your hair wet is bad for your eyesight =[ but I love your hair<33333333333

  • Thanks for mentioning black skin :)

  • your hair regime is the same as mine, lol.

  • I love your hair and tan. You look more tan

  • I was starting to think I was kind of dumb as I work it out the same way as you and Sam, but because a lot of other guru's on here do it the opposite way I was starting to think I was wrong and kind of an idiot! SO glad you did his video as now I feel all clever again and I can go back to my smug 'I'm right' ways =D

  • I just saw someone comment that you should use a foundation that matches your skin rather than try to counteract with it, but the weird thing for me is that I have VERY pink cool-toned skin so I use a warm foundation to cover it and it does so beautifully...I've tried foundation with a bit of pinkness to it and I looked like a clown. Lol maybe I'm confusing myself with this color theory stuff, ha

  • I have extremley brown eyes (almost black I kind of look like Judy Garland) theyre quite big eyes too and I am pale, No matter how much I tan, I still seem to not get dark enough to find the right colour for me. I use MAC Studio fix NC 20 and I mix with a lighter colour, But I've been doing a Marylin Monroe style makeup. Would you be able to do a tutorial for very dark eyes and pale skin? Because I find my eyes are so hard to contour with skin.

What colour eyeshadow/lips should I be using?

  • You girls are so sweet...gosh.

  • thankyou! im olive skin to me i have very yellow skin....and everytime i got get new foundation it looks too pink or orange...so i need to buy cool foundations? right now im using marykay ivory 202....i want to try a mac foundation can you suggest one? lately my face looks cakey i hate it! help!

  • My skin color is pale... like white almost and i sometimes get red and pink pigments on my face when its warm.. but im looking for a foundation that matches my skin tone but i cannot find one. they're all too dark. i recently bought a powder foundation by Nars but i want a liquid foundation. Do you know any foundations for pale skin? thx

  • I use NW30 under my eyes (I am really heavily blue under) but I constantly feel that its too orange because I'm insanely fair in skintone. I usually blend my foundation on top of it to counter the orange but keep the cover on. Would you say that's a good method?

  • both of you are blessed with such beautiful hair. I studied interior design and we had about 2 weeks doing color theory. This was just like being back in class....fun refresher :)

  • Lovely girl.. I go to bed with wet hair and i frighten my boyfriend in the morning.. har har.

  • Thank you very much! Very interesting!

  • If you are terrible with your own hair as you said, God in His wisdom gave you a natural beautiful hair, with big curls, that looks like you just came out of the Salon. Thank for this video, it gets more clear to me now what is a cool, neutral and warm tone.

  • Thanks, this makes everything so much clearer!

  • I love how normal you are and do like 100's of others and wash your hair and go to bed lol :0) xxxJoolsxxx

  • :) I'm very thankful that I've taken color theory classes for college. Turns out I actually get to apply the knowledge with makeup.. woo!

  • thanks for the video but i still have a question i have a birthmark which is blueishgreen on my face and if i want to conceal this what color would you suggestion i use studio tech nc45 and the shear loose powder in nc40 what would you think i should use thanks for any help with this question : )

  • can you explain asian skin tones?

  • hey

i understand what you are saying but i have blue under my eye but right next to it i have red tones so i dont know what to do a warn con brightens up the red and a cool con brightens up the blue and went i try to use a little of both it get muddy

help please (i have cool toned skin)

  • thanks for this! cud u also demonstrate on an indian woman please? i'd find tht veryy helpful :D thnks x

  • hi, could you show some pictures of faces to explain different skin undertones? also whats an olive skin? i read that all the time but I don't understand it.

    Love your videos! thx

  • You look all sun kissed and healthy. Holiday was good to you. :D Thanks for this super helpful video!

  • I love theory videos :) thank you so much

  • but how do you know if you're a warm or cool? i'm having the problem of choosing the right hair and makeup color for my tone.

  • my hair is like urs XD and thnk u

  • Thanks so much

  • nice tan Nic !!!

  • very useful! can you talk more about colour and contrasts? Would help me alot as a (self taught)makeup artist

  • I am still trying to wrap my head around the Mac colouring system. My veins are definately blue and I have pink undertones to my skin, yet NC 15 is the perfect match for my skin. I get confused because I have always considered myself to be "cool" with the pinky and bluey tones in my skin, not warm.

  • really interesting, thank you!!

  • I hope you do one for black skin! I've been told warm and cold and it's confusing.

  • i'm really confused with skintones.. at least now i can say i have the gist of it. hopefully with the next video i will get a better understanding.

    thanks!

  • Wow, I always thought pink was cool and yellow was warm in terms of foundation. Interesting!

  • I have yellow skin tone but my face is more pink. When I try to find a foundation to match my neck and chest i often end up with foundation that is orange :/

  • that NC was really really yellow! lol *is* NC 42 holla!

  • my skin is very pink so i use a yellow based foundation and it gets rid of the pinkiness and gives me a more golden complexion. when i used green it kind of just gave me an ashy pale pink color. so for all you girls out there with pink/red skintones opt for the yellow! and i actually found a very good liquid concealer at sephora and it was the sephora brand! i got it in yellow and it works great with my under eye circles and covering blemishes. i highly recommend it!

  • I'm sure you've mentioned this before, but could you possibly recommend a good setting powder for under the eyes? Thanks so much :)

  • You should make a playlist called BASICS so all of us can go back to it when we have questions.

  • wow wow wowww so helpful! thaaanks :) x

  • It sounds like with make-up you look at it a bit differently than with art. In my oil painting classes at college we were taught there are cool reds and warm blues etc. So when I'm looking at eye shadow and such, and I'm an olive tone, I should look for cool colors, and that would be the yellow-blue range? No cool reds, right? lol, I hope I'm getting this. It would definitely help take the guess work out of hunting down colors.

  • great video

  • Hey, my names Desirie (:

  • i'm wondering the difference between warm and cool colors like what does a warm pink look like compared with a cool pink? or a cool purple and a warm purple... does that even make sense? or are certain colors strictly cool or warm

  • The video wasn't nearly nerdy enough. Nerd it up more. You can do better than this. Be more comprehensive and use more examples. Thanks!

  • the best makeup gurus!

  • where is your watch from? i love it!

  • Lovely post holiday glow nic :) x

  • ok so i wear nc45 in mac, and i use concealer under my eyes because i think that i might have a little bit of darkness under my eyes ( just a little not to dark) any way, which concealer would someone with my skin tone wear if i am a nc45 and have brown eyes? would i then choose a colour in the nw family? like nw40?

  • how can you tell whether something has a yellow undertone, a blue, a pink etc...thanks!

  • That's where it threw me, I never understood why yellow was cool but it makes sense now that it's neutral and can be deemed cool if it has some green in it. thanks

  • When I use creamfoundations for fair/medium skintone I use mainly 4 different colors One with very pink undertone and one with very yellow undertone, then I have one very pale neutral color, and one dark slightly olive tan color, It is easy for me to mix from there to match many colors of skin. To make it neutral (what I call neutral) I just mix equal amount of yellow and pink, and then it goes from there.

  • Could you use Indian models to explain the 'complexity of skin tones' as well as black models? It would be much appreciated.

  • Seeing as you are now using black models, would it be possible for you to use Indian models? It would be very useful. Thank you.

  • Where did you buy that color wheel? I'd like to purchase one!

  • Excellent advice and it makes sense!

  • so if you have warm skin should i use nc15 or nw? im still confused about that .

  • Can you do a tutorial on an olive skine model ? thanks

  • i know mac does pink=warm and yellow=cool, which is very confusing for me because i used to work for another cosmetics company whose foundations yellow=warm and pink=cool. ive noticed most other brands do it this way too. ahh so confusing! why do all brands do it differently?

  • I love all your videos ! I was wondering if you guys could do make up on someone that has tan skin now kinda I use Mac NW40 and is blends in very nice but makes me break out a bit cause I have oily skin ! any other foundations you would recommend for people with tan skin ? thanks

  • Nice! Informative! Thank you!! What if we have purply brown under eye circles? What color concealar are we supposed to use? Still orange? Sorry, I'm trying. hehe.

  • I find it very confusing to think of yellow as cool because if you are painting, you would use yellow to warm up other colours. For example, if you mix a little yellow into white for a cloud, your sky will look much brighter and less dull. Also, if you add yellow to blue, it makes it green, which according to your colour wheel, is a warmer colour than blue (if I correctly understand your colour wheel as a gradient). So in that case you would be using yellow to warm up a colour.

  • A basic class in color and design should be mandatory at every school (it's usually an intro to art or something like that). It eliminate so many of the problems and the questions that a lot of women seem to have about clothing and makeup and even interior design!

  • Good explanation. I should hope I'm wearing the right colour foundation/concealer as I did get colour matched in MAC. So going by what you've said I should have the right products - yay!

  • You girls are beautiful. I still love yous Sam & Nic <333

  • Yay! I'm so looking forward to the tutorial for brown skin!! YAYYYYYYY!!!

  • Great video, so lets see if I got this right. If you have a pink/red undertone to your skin then you get an nw foundation, and a yellowish would be nc?? Also, underneath the eyes, if you had blue/purple circles than you would use an nw concealer to neutralize the colours, and if you were to have alot of redness around your eyes then you would use an nc concealer? and likewise with any discoloration to the rest of the face. Do I have this right??

  • I have no use for any of this information, but it's still really cool.

  • Thank you

  • Love your channel! Can you use celebrities as examples? It would be truly helpful. Thanx.

  • this makes total sense but its hard to think of it as pinks being warm and yellows being cool lol just cause generally you grow to learn that yellow is warm and pinks are cool for foundation undertones. Same kinda goes for the blue under the eye, they say to use yellow when its really peach/orange, man they are just trying to jack us up lol. Thanks for this vid its very helpful and im gonna try to start thinking of undertones your way cuz it does make more sense.

  • helpful. thanks! :)

  • Thank you for making this video, it's so helpful!

Some questions: 1) If I have a yellow undertone, should I buy a cool color foundation?

    2) Why is it so hard for me to find concealer and foundation that doesn't turn orange or pink as soon as it touches my face? I've tried low end and high end foundations but even the best matches are slightly orangey on my face :(

    3) Where is your white watch from? I love it!

    Thank you.

  • I'm NC20

My under eyes seem a tad dark & tad red but otherwise like the color of the rest of my skin..Would sticking with my NC20 studio concealer be best?

  • I'm an art major and have worked with a color wheel many times, and I get it, but not always sure...This might actually clear it up for me.

I am NC20 which means I have yellow undertones mostly? or can be warm or cool ? MAC has tried NW20 foundation or NC15 NW15 on me and they become ashy or too light... So every foundation/powder from MAC I get in NC20. Would that mean I'm definitely more yellow tone or a mix of both?

  • I wish you would have given some examples with pictures and saying whether that person is a warm or a cool type. I would suggest that you are a warm type or is that just because you have a tan?

How about the makeup: Can cool types only wear cool colors or should they wear warm colors?

It would be great to see more videos on this topic!

You do a really good job here!

  • This was very helpful. Thank you for making this video.

  • Ooooooh I think you meant you both were there for SEVEN years. Ok.

  • Are there better MAC foundations than the other? I'm Indian (if that helps), but I don't have really dark skin. It's a bit more towards the fairer side and it's combination skin. I use NC35 in the Studio Fix Line. I was just wondering, are there other MAC foundations that suit certain skin types better? Sorry if this is confusing! :)

  • thanks for this, am so interested in this topic, i think all will become clearer when you show us on the model. look forward to it!

  • YOU were both SEVEN when you worked at Mac???

  • @beautybuff820 No we both worked at mac for 7 years

  • Excellent video! Thank you so much it was really helpful! BTW you look gorgeous and soo tan... hope you had a great holiday!!

  • Applying these "rules" is not the problem. Recognising my skin tone is what I find difficult. Anyway, I always ask for advice, but it's nice to know the reasoning behind it. Very informative. And... I had never thought about the meaning of the letters NW and NC before, I thought they were just product codes or something. Makes perfect sense now!

  • How can i find out what my skin undertone is?

  • Thank you for letting know how you do your hair, I know its been asked alot.

  • It must be so hard to have naturally beautiful hair... hehe :)

  • Please will you do a few tutorials for indian women? Maybe hint at what foundations we should be using and how to make the best of our features? Would really appreciate it if you could :) xx

  • @MoggyMuffin yep i want that too pls pixiwoo

  • Amazing! <3

  • What would make brown eyes, more...well pop?

  • very helpful thank u..

  • Awesomeee! Thanks Nic! Really helpful!

  • That's the way my hair is, and I almost always let it air dry, and my hair is naturally wavy/slightly curly. But, it always gets very frizzy. I should wet my hair right before I go to bed and sleep on it!

  • thaaaaaaaaaaaaaank u :)

  • very interesting!

  • what about brown eyes? what should you were?

  • @Lulipaz Cool tone e/s would work fantastic, like Purples, Greens and Blues.
