I usually go for a blank card if I can't find one that has the wording I like. But I make sure the card has an image or is coloured appropriate to the person.

Being a father to an 11 year old, 9 year old, and 16 month old.... I really prefer the homemade ones (I never throw those away) and if they make it sweet, sincere, with a little silliness.... it makes them that much better. But, that's just me. As a Father, I always appreciate the thought behind the card when my daughter gives me a card....when she and her brother were little they lost their Mom so I got HAPPY MOTHER's DAY DAD! Cards PLUS HAPPY FATHER's DAY Cards!

I've never had a problem with Father's Day cards... because I've never had to buy one. Score!

But for cards in general, I like to pick a card that (I feel) matches the person, usually the design, or the simple message. THEN, I write my own message. Nothing better than a hand written card.

So, rather than trying to get a card that says it all... pick a card that gives you the inspiration to write stuff yourself!
