  • dude that fill is really easy and boring....thank god for youtube on informing me about these things through little snippet clips of the film before i go out and actually buy it. i'll be on the jo jo mayer channel

  • IN GADD WE TRUST!

  • GADD ALLMIGHTY!!!

  • I don't like his snare sound

  • pulling out my AJA CD right now!!

  • I love how we've all been trying for years to figure out the Aja solo (starting near 7:00) portion note-by-note, and Gadd himself makes a casual video saying, "Yeah, it was something like this; I don't remember exactly." And it sounds just as good ad-lib by Gadd.

  • PLAY HARDER, SMACK THAT FUCKING DRUM!

  • @CleverDjembe You probably love metal, don't you?

  • does anyone know what kind of drumsticks those are?

  • @Gr1zz3m Steve Gadd vic firth signature

  • @Gr1zz3m they're Steve's signature model made by Vic Firth

  • Steve wore his fancy T-Shirt and shorts just for this special occasion.

  • He's high as hell.

  • What are Aja drum fills? I can do all of these already was he doing a tutorial or something?

  • @CameronIRL Aja is a Steely Dan song/album.

  • does anyone know what the stickings are to the drum fill he plays at 2:06-2:08?

  • what a BEAUTIFUL sounding snare!

  • It's funny how people like Steve make it sound EASY... it's second nature to him, there's probably very little actual THOUGHT involved, because there's obvious talent and instinct there, but what he's doing is so intricate and coordinated, it makes the average musician think, "Great idea... how'd you come up with it?"

  • dude I just realized that gadd is the most intresting man in the world from the dosequis comercials

  • fu i cant even get double strokes to work -_-

  • It's so easy for him that he seems to be bored...

I wish I could be bored like that!

  • he looks a lot like Paulo Coehlo.

  • i just noticed steve's tattoos for the first time, doh!

ive been playin with the 6 stroke roll, so, this vid just came in real handy!

    rock steady

  • Christopher Walken on the drums? haha 1:22

  • Thumbs up for the fat ass in the front row at 1:40 who has NO idea what steve is talking about

  • i'd love to see him demonstrate the first licks to his solo....that syncopated high hat lick...damn lol

  • Has anyone ever figured out if the "Stick Click" in Aja was a fuck up or not?

  • @ChuckaXr I always wondered that myself.

  • @ChuckaXr I heard the stick click was Gadd throwing an "eff you" to Fagan and Becker in the control room at the studio. The story goes that there was some bad blood, but they called him in for this track because he was the only guy that could really do it. Gadd comes in, blows 5 lines off the floor tom, then proceeds to kill this in one take. So he threw the stick click at them, as an, "eff you, I'm a badass, you thought this was hard? This is nothing" sorta thing.

  • @jgsuperpants

Funny you said there was bad blood as I just recently saw the BBC's Classic Albums series on Aja and Steve Gadd and this famous solo were nowhere to be seen. Could be why they didn't include him in the program. Either way, the record will always live on as their masterpiece!!!

  • @gottohavesoul

    > Funny you said there was bad blood as I just recently saw the BBC's Classic Albums series on Aja and Steve Gadd and this famous solo were nowhere to be seen.

He wasn't mentioned in Dan's video of the making of Aja either.

  • Thumb Up if you recognise As I Am Intro !

  • @Friday13thTaurus That's the spirit man! ;)

  • @xvizionsx Hahahaha Wow...Go play Xbox!

  • @xvizionsx ...........................Lulz

  • Its not feel and passion its playing like a gorilla with no kind of need at all..Hard hitting is not a drumming quality almost everytime...shows inmature people

  • @xvizionsx how dare you compare these two.

  • @xvizionsx come on dude... please dont mention barker in a gadd video...

  • @xvizionsx -_-

  • @xvizionsx Travis Barker is garbage. Try Bonham if you want feel and passion. Steve Gadd is fucking awesome thoufh.

  • @xvizionsx bullshit. travis barker sucks dick. feel and passion is someone like chad smith, bonham, or dave grohl.

  • @MidAtlanticOfficials Lol. If you think Travis Barker sucks, you obviously haven't a clue about him.

  • is it me or the start is the same chord as "as i am" from dream theater?

  • @DT2BLZ yep it is

  • What kit is that?

  • what's with all the arguing and comparing of drummers? Music ain't a competition and should never be.

  • @shufflethedrums24 OH MY GOD THANK YOU. Totally agree. just makes people feel uncomfortable when they don't play the same way - everyone's unique in the way they play.

  • The begin with "Hudson Music" Logo is from the begin Dream Theater - As I Am 0:12

  • Why does Travis Barker come up in every video I see of good drummers? "Travis Barker is better!!" like...no. Drummers don't sit around and compare dick sizes--they just play their music and are all good at what they do.

  • @Hodge329 Bkoz people who mentions Travis Barker are Younglings.

  • OH MY GADD!!! :P

  • Comment removed

  • All that Gaddism!

  • Lol why's everybody ragging on travis barker the dude is a lot better than people credit for... He's no max roach but god damn get a life... The dudes accomplished more in 30 years than a lot of you.

  • I wish I could play my snare with such grace...

  • how come every time I watch a drum video one of the top comments is about how good or bad travis barker is lol. hes such a troll topic.

  • the like bar is like my penis

  • @Smash2229sk Your penis might have gangrene.

  • @Smash2229sk i feel sorry for you, its only approx 1.75 inches long! ;)

  • Right in the beginning of the solo, SG is playing in 3/4 with the hi hat on every beat while doing a moving snare roll underneath it.

I wish I could find it in here somewhere, just it's jammin'.

  • I don't know how many people even owned this album, but there was a Chuck Mangione LP that was a benefit concert for an earthquake in Italy back in 1980.

Featured on this LP were Steve Gadd, Chick Corea, and Dizzy Gillespie.

At one point they brought SG out for the "11th Commmandment" (which was a song that Chuck wrote for one of SG's recitals while they were both students at EASTMAN).

In the middle of that song SG breaks into a solo that was pure heaven.

  • fucking hell.. drugs work.. they lied.. hahaha

  • I love the ending drum groove, it's awesome!!

  • Love the old school tattoos and the wicked blow dried hair! The man is a legend!

  • I love that he just looks like a guy in a pub, just standing there with a pint by the bar, then just plays this amazing fill with, it seems, no energy expended. "Oh, him? Oh, that's just Steve, he's always hanging around by the bands. Got any peanuts?"

  • Had the good fortune to meet Steve Gadd after a gig in Scottsdale AZ, nicest guy, legendary talent, humble, can't wait to see him again.

  • shoes uggly

  • what a great drummer talk about economy of motion with little effort this guy will be playing into his ninties while other powerhouse drummers like bruford and collins had to retire

  • i liked the As I Am intro :D

  • Comment removed

  • I would like to thank Hudson Music for this series. I started playing drums when i was in a cadet band aged 12, then i found via the lateKen Stevens (whom i later worked for, selling drums) a good teacher that taught me the orchestral way of playing, once i had got used to the grip i found life easier!

  • It's obvious from the comments who the musicians are and who the drummers are.

  • Its one thing to have technique, but I think Gadd's fame in the studio is being able to read a chart, in many cases sight reading, which goes beyond "chops".

  • What pedals is he using? they look like the feel I love!

  • Steve Gadd, The worlds most washed up drummer.

  • @outlawedman You couldnt carry Gadds Stick Bag!!

  • @bobbystockerdrums You're right it's probably made of burlap, it's most likely going to dissolve. .

  • he sure plays this feel alot.....

i think this is the only feel he plays...lolol

  • all the marks are in the centre of the toms, now thats good technique right there.

  • Lol I love the way he talks.

"It was like, right foot, right hand, left, right." "I dunno it was something like this? No. Shit I don't know I'm high anyway just come talk to me after the clinic or something."

  • It’s called Kindred Sprit! Some should get out and get some soon.

  • Damn, watching this makes me want to sell my drumkit...amazing drummer.

  • @TheSRalston But Steve isn't able to hit ervery drum in the world, so hang on...

  • @TheSRalston How much? hahahaha :o)

  • There is a video above. Stop complaining about comments.

  • @aldrichp i agree

  • he has nice shoes.

  • Aja, one of the greatest albums ever. Steely Dan ONLY uses the top musicians.

If you get to perform with them, you have to consider yourself one of the best!

  • @lhcarter Same with Frank Zappa

  • Get some perspective . :)

  • crazy ignorance in some of these comments, comparing 2 drummers, especially drummers at the top of their game, is like comparing great painters, bassists, authors, or anyone who is great at what they do from any number of different fields.

  • Mentioning Travis Barker with the names of Steve Gadd and Charlie Watts is just pure ignorance. Don't mention them in the same breath, it is musical heresy.

  • @spd13062 Right. I think the younger generation lack real talent, drum hero's so they latch on skater thugs with no real contribution as a way of making up that fact. And I suspect a lot just keep mentioning that dude over and over on YouTube just to piss off us real drummer fans.

  • @wendileona A-men.

  • @wendileona Travis Bar... *cough*

  • someone should shoot this overrated old fool. all i can hear is plop plop plop..

  • @idektron You will never play as godd as Gadd!! Hows that feel???

  • @bobbystockerdrums that feels awesome. you cut me real deep.

  • His drumkit somehow seems supreme to all other drumkits..

  • man... never heard anything like that snare. sounds almost like a classic marching snare drum but on a drum set.

  • for me..... you equal ZERO! LOVE NICKO MC BRAIN!

  • @ostric145 It's not wierd if you're a musician. It's a tutorial....and it's FREE.

  • what does the snare drum costs???

    maybe 1,599$??

    that ting sounds perfectly =)

  • Even when he breaks it down for you, it still comes down to the execution. Hours of practice and building technique so that you can play this stuff as smoothly as he does is a must.

  • yea.....everyone's an expert behind their keyboard....Neil is great..a drum God, but he will be the first to tell you he learned from Buddy and created his own style. Dont knock Gadd, for those fills on Aja are truly classic as well. Besides, which CD did you play on?

  • Thus dude is TOOOTALLY high A.F :D

  • si te fijas, no es él el que toca.-

  • Heres the great rrdrums1952 showing his stuff on the cowbell at his peak in the 70's lol.

    watch?v=MpKqlmAFSic

  • @1:40

  • som people believe in god, others believe in gadd.

  • 1:46 fill was played by bonnam from 1968 albums with led zeppelin

  • @MidnightRequiem7 And those fills were played by Buddy Rich 25 years before Zeppelin.

  • He drums as clever as a monkey

  • Here's the easiest way to solve the Gadd v. Barker debate: compare their discographies. Gadd wins easily.

  • @IPstixrawesume it's an insult to drumming for that debate to even exist...

  • 42 Slipnot fans.

  • There is a drummer(or drummers) for everyone. For some there's Travis. For others, like most musicians there are Beauford, Igoe,Gadd, Lang, Phillips, Gavin H, Minnemann,Omar the list goes on....and on! Check out Breaking Benjamins drummer(there is some Excellent footage of his playing on here, and some of the others like Roddy. There are A LOT of really great drummers in ALL different styles! Why is there so much arguing about Barker? Not one of my favorites but if you like him, that's up to you!!

  • Am I one of the few who thinks Steve Gadd is really overrated?

As for Travis Barker... lol. I think people don't like to admit that he is actually a good drummer underneath all the flair and the fact that stupid teenagers think he's the best drummer of all time. Obviously not one of the best, but he is good and he's become a drumming personality.

  • @NickoJH You have to remember that the way the drum set is USED for pop music these days was largely invented by Steve Gadd. Just look at Gadd's discography - just look at the influence he's had! NOBODY was doing most of the combinations and licks that you see nowadays before Gadd. Gadd was influenced by people like Buddy Rich, Philly Ho Jones, and Art Blakey. Go look at some of their work on youtube; those guys were SO far beyond just pounding out a beat; they were *musical*!

  • Any drummer is better than Travis.

  • Yeah sorry Credative. Steve Gadd is one of the best all time, if yer listening to Blink-182 his music may be a challenge for you though. Comparing Gadd and Barker, is like comparing a Camaro to a Ferrari. I mean nothing wrong with a Camaro, but c'mon dude, listen again.

  • "They asked for fills between those figures, I dunno"...... Jesus.

  • @Credative How do you compare Steve Gadd with Travis Barker ?, oh my god, im sorry for you .... i think you dont know anything about drumming.

  • @Credative That's probably the most ignorant thing I have ever heard in my life. Travis Barker was still in his daddy's nutsack when Steve Gadd got famous.

  • @TheKoreanX That's also a good point you brought me on, Stevie Shitface there is old as fuck, Travis is the new talent.

  • @Credative Hahaha, I'm done with you, you stupid troll. Once you become an adult you will understand how silly your comments were. Troll alert, troll alert!!!

  • @TheKoreanX Deal with it, stop raging. We know you get bullied at school, you can talk to us about it, don't worry. You don't have to take it out over other people on the internet.

  • @Credative LOL you seem to be the one raging there dude, I can tell from your failure of a comeback. No matter which way you put it, Steve Gadd can play much more difficult rhythms and styles than that idiot Travis Barker does with his mindless bashing. I can tell you need more lessons and instruction since you don't understand what Gadd is doing in this video, or anything else that he does for that matter. If you honestly think that Travis Barker is the best, than I truly feel sorry for you.

  • @TheKoreanX Right on! Why are so many people ignorant about the contributions of drummers like Gadd. It's appalling. Seriously, modern pop drumming was practically invented by Gadd. There are many good young, contemporary drummers, but comparing Travis Barker to Steve Gadd is just pathetic. Gadd outdrums Barker without even picking up his sticks; that's how much better he is!

  • @Credative lol... watch neil peart live and you will see the difference

  • it sounds much better with penholder than with french grip!!!!!

  • @TakisT888 it ain't table tennis. think you mean holding matched grip sounds better traditional grip

  • @aeco15 thx for the help i`m german;) no i mean traditional grip sounds better than matched grip if you play stuff like steve gadd ;)

  • @TakisT888 Everything sounds better if you play like steve gadd :P

  • @ostric145 hahaha Me too!

  • The shining example of what proper technique and knowledge of the rudiments can do. And what an incredible sounding kick and snare.

  • Love the enthusiasm of the guy in the yellow shirt in front row:D

  • he is a master

  • here's a suggestion : play what they are clapping on a cowbell with the foot and then keep quarter notes with the other foot hi-hat and play this pattern with the hands

  • Cant believe I contributed to this when I could have been practicing ratamacues starting with my right foot. Now I'll NEVER be as good as Steve EVER!!!!!!

  • Wish people would drop the absurd Gadd / Weckl / Colaiuta thing. I guarantee these guys do NOT lie awake at night worrying whether the other two are better than they are. Imagine Mrs Gadd... "What's the matter dear, can't you sleep?"

"Well, I'm worried about Vinnie. I think he might be better than m... better than... OH GOD I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO SAY IT!!!"

"There there dear, it's okay, I'll make you a nice cup of tea"

    ROFLMFAO....

  • @metube71 Yeah, but have you seen the drum battle between those three in the 70's? I've come to call it simply "drum porn" XD. Search "King of Drummers" and it should be the first one on the list :D

  • @metube71 me too. Cause they know Gavin Harrison is the best now ;P

  • @Str8Faced That's like saying Bananas are like the best fruit right now in the fruit scene. When you are at the level of Gadd,Gavin, Vinnie ect ect, there's no better or best. People that try and put musicians above one another are people with the collective intellect of a child.

  • STEVE GOD

  • i see moongel

  • Gadd is one of the best drummers out there IMO.

  • you all sound like idiots arguing about who is "better"

  • some of these comments are just so full of ignorance. vinnie is by far way more musical and has so much control over what he plays than gadd or weckl. they are all amazing drummers, but if you put them in order its vinnie, weckl then gadd. anyone who says vinnie has no control is a fucking idiot. watch his playing with karizma at the 2000 md festival. precision at its best, just like weckl. gadd is somewhat boring to me, but i still like him.

  • @soundmind529 Dude, lookup "Dave Weckl Drum Solo - DrumTek, 2006" and be wise. To state that Vinnie is "better" is foolishness. They are both at the pinnacle of drumming. Let's leave it at that.

  • I'm not a drummer but there's a musicality to everything he does - makes you want to play along.

  • He is/was OVERRATED.

  • @flymarvin That is why he played on 600 records. Anyway real musician recognize musicianship.

    (hard work,innovation,quality of sound,musicality ,etc.)

  • i'm most impressed by a crowd that can clap that well. i guess that's what happens when you get a bunch of percussionists together.

  • @tljsm1 yeah but keeping a great groove is pretty uncommon, but it's necessary if you want your band to do well. most rock bands have decent drummers in the sense that they can keep good time, write good parts make it groove. gadd gets hired for it because most would agree he's the absolute best groover out there. he's on a whole other level.

  • Why are there 38 dislikes on this video steve gadd should be steve godd

  • Beautiful drumming from Mr Gadd. Lovely control and flow. I like the warm rich sound of his drum kit.

  • Also have you ever heard Aja!!! The drum solo on that is flawless and was recorded after two takes. Barker would take a whole year in the studio to pull that off. The number of people Gadd inspired is endless and probably includes Barker. Gadd was the first player to successfully play jazz, pop, funk and fusion all at the highest calibur and has been reguarded for many years as the leading name in session drumming. So next time u go trolling on videos do your research. k??

  • To be fair.....Travis Barker is an amazing drummer, how else would you get to be that good. Whether you think he's better or not is your own opinion and depends what styles you are into. However, you have to remember that Gadd was around at a time when music was evolving and was at the forefront of session work. Working with Chick Corea with the jazz fusion. Steely dan with funk/pop. Clapton, Paul Simon, James Taylor. All the big names!! I'm running out of words so will carry on on another post

  • so fucking what, big deal you played some for steely dan, I don't think that's nothing to be proud of.

  • @readerwriter and bitching on youtube is?

  • @smorgan good point but I still don't rate "skills" like this anywhere near as high as good songwriting or a soulful performance.

  • @readerwriter they're just different. you need to understand styles like jazz and funk to see what makes the drums so difficult/musical. rock drumming is like rock bass. it's not where it shines. when people dance, they aren't dancing to a melody or guitar solo are they?

  • @smorgan1809 all I'm trying to say is I think feelings and emotions are what should come way before technique. Athletes have technique but what they excel at doesn't move me on a an emotional level. So I guess I'm saying I think Gadd is a musical "jock", excellent physical skills but noting really to say.

  • @readerwriter WOAH sorry mate but i can bet everything i own on the fact that you aren't a drummer. or at least you aren't a groove drummer or.... well...... MUCH of a drummer. it's the exact opposite. there are plenty of drummers that can outchop gadd. he's FAMOUS for his feel and groove. that's why people like paul simon, steely dan, chick corea, eric clapton, james brown, paul mcartney and art garfunkel hire him.

  • @readerwriter "Nothin to say"?! Are you crazy? Gadd, consistently is voted the BEST overall drummer year after year. He is noted for his "taste", which you, obviously, do not have. Taste is that uncanny ability to always play the right thing at the right time. That's what other pros. always say about Gadd. He is unparalleled in the world of drumming.

  • Travis Barker is so much better than that old man.
