The song meaning IS political. Listen to the lyrics its not hard to figure out. The song was written after 911. I know the album well I have listened to it about 50 times in the last 2 years. I still think the song pet is about losing individuality to fear. He was just using the example of war time fear in this song. In other songs he uses the example of religious fear.

I believe there is a Jesus mentioned in Roman crucifixion records about the time he was supposed to have died, though I have been unable to find a source for that.
Also, Mara Bar-Serapion mentions a wise King executed by the jews (does not call him jesus) and in the same breath he speaks of the execution of Socrates and the burning of Pythagoras. The man existed. And no doubt he was wise, but a god?

It was quite common back then for people to be publicly killed on a cross. There is a factual history about Jesus, not just ramblings and propaganda put into a book.
