I also noted you did not add 'wood flour' to your molten pitch? Do you know this tip? Mix the wood flour into the pitch and it helps it bind and become stronger. Ie if you had problems with your pitch lap chipping apart.
Latex/Nitrile gloves maintain feel and protect you from pitch burns.
To avoid the mess of hot pitch spilling over you could have cut the overhanging square lap mould so it was flush circular with your base, and then made a retaining wall out of masking tape around the whole thing. Then fill it to your desired height-no mess.

Then let the pitch go solid. Remove the tape. The place your heated tool on top of the solid pitch, and let it slowly melt down - no mess.
