He says true words.. the rest of the candidates run for publicity and try to put him down because they know that the power of people is well above the power of money and as Obama has said in his other speeches was only compliments to the other candidates and I think he is right in every way. I live in the United Kingdom and yet I wish that he was the president here as a lot of work needs to be done.. around the whole world with the power of the people.
"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and... it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
When the gov first started Social Security the payout ages were set so that few people would live to collect on them based on life expectancy tables. They kept adjusting them to up the ages. They had an excess of funds that they loaned to other gov agencies never repaid. Or mismanaged the funds.
Just a reminder... "Boomers" also pay and have paid, as has almost every working person, into Social Security since the 1930's... It's not just "us" (youth) paying for "them" (seniors). That comes across as divisive, Us-vs-Them talk.
I see you don't want to dicuss the issues, as you haven't posted any comment that are not your view. That is sad as you portray yourself as a student and yet you won't engage in usefull discussions.
Please discuss Obamas views on the issues and also personal views so us trpical white, small town, hard working middle class Americans can figure out what he stands for besides the word change. Change can be bad as in high taxes, inflation, and capital gain taxes raised. When you get older and you will, if you decide to downsize your home you will give 28% of the gain to the Gov. not your retirement. These are just a few of the problems with Obama. He doesn't realize how his ideas hurt Americans.
First the S.S. problem comes from the Gov. borrowing from the Social Security fund. They can not pay back the principle let alone the interest, with a 9 trillion debt. You are not paying for your parents generation. Warren Buffet probably won't even apply for S.S. he has plenty of money and gives alot of it away to charity. Even if you raise payroll taxes the Gov. will borrow it for pork barrel projects. Where is all the money we paid in and we pay alot? Your parents generation. Think about it!
For all the critics of Obama saying the "BITTER" word, I suggest they watch Michael Moore's movie The Big One and read his book Downsize This and they'll understand why people can get bitter when they loose their jobs, get paid for less and hold two jobs to make ends meet.
this is great that people are talking but this is part of the problem stop debating with Clinton supporters vs. Obama supporters and start to go after McCain
heres an idea, how about we give the american people some credit and realize that they are smart enough to manage their own retirement!
but alas, liberals think we are to stupid to have personal saving accounts.
btw do the research, social security does come out of the payroll tax. but people like warren buffet arent on a payroll, they make all there money from capital gains. raising the min will only impact the middle class
Knows his stuff? How bout knowing the intent of the constitution itself. Or the evil that taxing income really is? Inside every liberal there is a totalitarian. I'm sure he is for gay rights, so the the government has not right to regulate who is in our bed, but does have the right to take income? Please. He should go back and reread jerfferson's works and notes. Jerfferson is turning in his grave to see his libertarianism turn to socialism
Do you realize if you want to build a nest egg by investing in the stock market and you happen to make money, Obama wants to raise the capital gains taxes and take at least 28% of what yo make? You will have a hard time buying a home or saving for your retirement and will have to depend on Social Security. It's broke because of the Gov. borrowing from it.They borrowed the principleand therefore it can't even grow and earn interest. What will stop them from borrowing more if you increase payrolltx
Smart? He doesnt seem to understand the evil that is the payroll tax. He is advocating theft. Turning Jefferson's libertarianism into marxism is not something I would consider smart.
The media are idiots making a big deal out of what he said. Obama hit it right on the mark, but let me guess we want a Politician who will lie to us. I don't want to hear anyone who voted for Bush or who plans on voting for McCain bitch about the economy.
And the people that make much more than $97,000 would also begin to contribute the their fair share of the social security benefits to other retirees ... sounds fair, but a 2% flat tax on all transactions with no allowable exceptions would be a better method to cover this need, and should be enough to cover all of our other failing social programs such as Education and Universal Healthcare ...

Is what he said correct? - Would an increase in the threshold to $105,000 provide enough capital or would it require more?

That's actually a good solution. It seems so obvious, yet it never came into my mind when people brought up social security issues.

very true. Social Security is being drained purposefully by the Republicans, Conservatives and their special interests in favor of privatization.
Well let me tell you something. I've been paying Social Security every day I've worked and I DEMAND MY SOCIAL SECURITY.
DO YOU?
I could fix this prob. with my hands tied behind my back blindfolded.
