..."Something always goes wrong when things are going right You swallowed your pride To quell the pain inside Someone captured your heart Like a thief in the night And squeezed all the juice out until it ran dry You've been read like an open book Page by page You'll never tell anyone your inner thoughts again You were taken in By a heart of fools gold Now you're drifting in circles In the depths of your soul"...
Breakbeat and E's came and took it all away, ..and then the world changed..no seriously, I wonder, was this music just too clever and intense, cause when the Stone Roses, with their dumbed out chic acidy Happy Mondays and ..that was it for wordsmiths and clever wordy pop like Elvis Costello and this dude. They just got wiped out in a year (88-89). Bands like Primal Scream just went with the trend, hired a technician.
Genius is right - he did everything on the original release of Soul Mining. I played the LP to death and it is still just a fresh, incredibly produced and as well mixed as Day 1.

The story of my life...chillingly honest and haunting music,Still a fucking brilliant album unto this day. It's totally unique filled with Matt's personality and artistic vision.
Wow, I listened to this song probably a million times and had not heard it for maybe 20 years. Reconnects with roots of pain... I am still floating in this little wooden box
I managed a bar in London a few years ago and had the pleasure of meeting Matt Johnson. I bought him a couple of beers and he was a perfect gentleman, a really nice guy.
This takes me back. And wow doesn't it still sound good. BTW, I'd put it on at partys, right at the end when everyones sitting around winding down. Perfect. Thanks for the post.

snips42 is bang on. Fantastic introspective album, but not a party album (buzzkill) great late night listening. Makes you think about everything. Matt is a genius. His best album bar none.
I've always felt the same thing when i listen to The The albums. It's kind of timeless really. This could have come out at any point recently and people would have loved it! I'm so glad I got the chance to see him here in Denver a few years ago.
shit, now i'm gonna have to go out and look for The The albums, can't believe I let them pass me by when I was growing up. Of course I'd heard of them but hadn't really listened to anything intently, there was just so much goin on back then. Well better later than never, so unbelieveably cool and ahead of his time
We use to play this in the locker room during two a day practices for football during my high school years...nice memories..too go back and know what we know now...lol.
very kind under the radar, but >>>kme i think that anybody from j.div down to the latest pretender's(including)oasis have had to bow down no matter how secrectly!!!!!!?????
"Tony." I keep checking his website, but so far, no news of an actual album coming out. Not surprising, since it's usually several years between each album. They're hard to wait for, but always worth it.
A trulty great track from one of the best albums ever made. I´ve been listening to this record frequently since 1983 and never get tired of it. In fact its the soundtrack to my god damned life!!
The cure,The chameleons, the sound, The Comsat Angels, sisters of mercy, the smiths, magazine..........the list goes on!!! The 80's were full of class bands!
if any of you are aware of Matt's current "Save shoreditch" campaign. myself and a few of his loyal fans have decided to do everything in our power to encourage Matt to do a gig at the site to try and raise awareness for his cause. We think that with enough interest he might go for the idea. The plan is to get as much support as we can so if your interested in helping plz spread the word and join The The (and Matt johnsons) Face book and my space pages and check for further details. I am a Fan of Matt Johnson, since I bought "Soul Mining" in 1983. Very good music with brilliant lyrics, especially the 12 Inchs were superb.
And it doesn´t sound oldfashioned these days. They don´t make music like these anymore.
If possible, try to listen to the 12 Inch-Version of Soul Mining, which is for me the best song of The The.
