Aw, Barbra. What can one say? Just 21 and singing with such incredible depth and maturity. Barbra had recently gone to singing in some (mostly) smaller night-clubs and now suddenly she's singing live on national television. How scary - and all at once exciting - it must have been! The happy stuff of dreams ;-)
This is exactly as Barbra performed it- LIVE- that evening in 1963, 'Java'. I don't know if there WAS a "complete" rendition recorded during that afternoon's dress rehearsal...
A verse is indeed missing from the song- probably because Ed told Barbra, before the show, that she'd have to "edit" her performance a bit. Because this was a LIVE program, and Sullivan was constantly shuffling the order and length of his headliners' perfromances right up to air time, he sometimes told them they'd have to "cut" some of their musical numbers, comedy routines, or animal acts for "time" {although a lion tamer once shot back, "Who's gonna tell the LION?"}.
@fromthesidelines The full performance is on Barbra's Just For The Record Collection (if you want to hear it complete), so I think it's cut just for this video clip for some reason. I think she sang the whole song on that day in 1963, unless the recording on Babs' CD is a rehearsal.
@jjj1951 we can only hope that WYOMINGMALI can take some time and hopefully grace us all with with a youtube video of his or herself singing this song so we can all watch in amazement how it should have been done....LOLOLOLOL
@wyomingmali She rather daringly blues it up and gave it a bit of very controlled raw edge that emotionally carries this very old twenties tune where it has NEVER been before. Your criteria are seriously screwed up on this one.

She was the last of the great singers of the Great American Music, a true jazz interpreter.... and was hailed as a true artist... not an actress, not a 'celebrity' but a vocal ARTIST with a voice that was a heaven sent gift. Those discerning 'Barbra Lovers' of the early sixties know what they lost to compromise after compromise. Oh of course the voice was there but the interpretive genius died in the sixties.
Dear Mrs Streisand, I attached my video, and would be so glad to communicate with u via e-mail or so, big PLEASE! Artur maria Simbürger, callartur@yahoo.com
what happened??? this is what all the excitement was all about. why did she abandon her art?? and now you can see the predecessor to bette, liza, patti, madonna, and gaga.
@mzmiller52 Streisand is hardly the predecessor to the likes of Madonna or Lady Gaga. She has an immense natural talent; lacking that Madonna and Gaga get by on being provocative. Good Business choice (they understand how fickle the mass audiences are), but indicative of how low, low, lower the music "industry' is able/willing to go.
Awesome and clear as a bell, and of course, total Streisand control of the melody and emotionality. She blends so well with a full brass orchestra, as if she is having a conversation with the arrangement, no just singing along. Thanks for posting!
These are the Streisand clips I enjoy the most: Barbra as a pure, up-and-coming belter, possessed with a voice like a hurricane, raw, glorious, PRE-"Funny Girl" and before ALL of her CBS TV specials; she was a talent who acted when she sang (note the tears in her eyes towards the end of "Sun," and the body going into near convulsions because it can barely contain her joy). Just a short time later she would also perform with Judy Garland on television.
@mannail888 I didn't say anything about her other venues being sub-par- I merely stated my admiration of her raw talent from the beginning, before she did all the other venues. Period.
@mca1218 Amen, yes, absolutely. A true artist who sold out to be a temperamental diva and "star". By the time she made Hello Dolly that bloated monstrosity that was ten years out of date even when it was made, she had lost that 'something' and never ever got it back.
@poetcomic1 What are you talking about? Barbra made a lot of good movies after Hello Dolly, like Yentl and The Way We Were and she also directed a few as well. How do you know that she was "tempermental" and a "bloated monstrosity" Do you have any proof to back that up?
This performance takes you by surprise. She uses her voice here quite aggressively at times. At times she seems almost bored or unsure what to do. Emotionally she seems to waver between sadness or loss and hope or fulfillment. Yet in the end it is an original, risky performance, not always beautiful, but with typical Streisand nuances, high belt, mix and soprano (A natural) notes from one instrument.
Holy Guacamole! Talent of this magnitude in 1963, she's still sounds flawless and remains "gawgeous!" Sadly now our culture produces tone-deaf losers like Taylor Swift.
DITTTO!!!..THIS IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE...Divine Barbra...what a talent, sould, gift, intellect...a woman of all women...I still wanna be like her!! :) Thank you for posting.
Everyone talks about Barbra Streisand's tone, the one that inspired all those comparisons to the world's smoothest condiment. They also speak of her range, which mirrors the distance between the depths of the Grand Canyon and the peaks of Everest. Her lung power invites equal comment; Small wonder since, at full bore, it can flatten a town.

@mca1218 You wrote as if "Funny Girl" and all those CBS TV specials are not on the same par as her just starting out period, circa 1961-1963.
