Well. No one alive pepole know the true story of Quasimodo. The book is one version and this is another. The real Quasimodo(?) (Sorry, tired) lived in the 1820th, and Victor Hugo wrote about him like Quasimodo lived in the 1480th. Victor Hugo had a lot of contact with the church and then knew Quasimodo. He wrote this story with he's thougths with Quasimodo as inspiration. It's almost like Robin Hood - no one knows the trues, and it's different versions of the story. I like this and the 1923 ver
Yet another story fucked up by Disney. Quasimodo must die. It is a crime for disney to change stories to be PG friendly. Who's with me on this. Plot is ruined by Disney where Hamlet is survivable for all but Claudius.
because of a song bye shinee called quasimodo, when i saw the lyrics it made me cry. i am afraid if i watch any movie about this i will burst in tears for hours.
@aquaholic1004 Esmeralda was WHITE! In Victor Hugo's novel, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, she was a little French girl who was kidnapped by gypsies due to her remarkable beauty. In her place, the gypsies left Quasimodo. Esmeralda's mother went a bit mad and left him on the church's doorstep to be raised by the church. The irony is that Quasimodo and Esmeralda cross paths later, each unaware that one had been swapped for the other. By the way, European gypsies are white!
You're right, Esmeralda was white. But unless your talking about Irish travellers, European gypsies are not white. There are some with very diluted blood and are fair with blonde hair, but people of the ethnic group are typically darker as they're not actually indigenous to Europe. (therefore not 'white')
Yes he does a bit! Very handsome man, a real heartthrob! I think he makes an awesome Phoebus, truely handsome and shining as the sun, unlike that ugly guy with a wig in 1956 adaptation.
this movie is good, but my one main criticism is that it takes away some of the book's depth and conforms the story to fit the time period better. the music didn't really help its case either.
This film takes really big liberties when it comes to story, but I think it's still the finest film adaptation. Maureen O'Hara is my favourite Esmeralda and Cedric Hardwicke is great as Frollo.
I find it slightly ironic that they've labeled the movie as an immortal classic. One of Hugo's most prominent themes was that only in death could a character become the divine, beautiful incarnation of themselves.
Phoebus doesnt actually get stabbed to death. Frollo stabs him, but he survives and leaves Esmerelda to marry his fiance. Hugo wrote such a beautiful heart-wrenching story, I cant wait until someone has the guts to make a movie that is true to the plot
Is it wrong to like both? It's a beautiful story--this version is heart-wrenching wonderful. Sure the Disney version has been numbed down, but to be honest, you don't see dark themes like that in Disney movies now. I think they're both fantastic movies.
Thank you ^^ I'm glad you enjoy both... too few people can't find it in them.
I LOVED the book... made me cry. <X( lol
I LOVED the cartoon... nice and dark. XD
I LOVED this movie... wonderfully acted.
It was close to the book, but I don't bash it to death if they leave out things; it's not like books made into movies stay 100% true all the time, right?
I was actually surprised at... how much THIS Quasi resembles DISNEY Quasi... XD it's almost scary! lol anyway... this movie is great! ^^
I thought the cartoon was a total travesty of the story. Although no movie maker has ever made the story with the original ending of the book, too downbeat I guess.
My favorite scenes is where the posit Esmerelda's unselfish prayer contraposed to the selfish prayers of the congregants, but she's the evil pagan. Later when Quasimodo is caring for her and is trying to hide his face. Charles Laughton seemed to have studied how people who are partially deaf sound when they talk.
Esmerelda is hanged and Quasimodo pushes Frollo from Notre Dame so he dies. He then finds Esmerelda's body and lies with her until she dies.. years later excavators find their bodies..

Hardwicke is very fantastic. Hereflects his charisma from the beginning to the end. He is one of my favorite Frollo's.

1:26 to 1:38 is a heartbreaking scene in this movie. Charles Laughton gives a terrific performance as Quasimodo. He does some very moving scenes.

Yes and they show that graphically in the 1959 version which frankly sucks!
I prefer this version because, while not having a "happy happy" ending, it does end with the bad guys getting theirs.
