Thank Bhudda ..I watched the FAR better original movie series before this lame bullcrap....Ogami Itto in that was an absolute Beast..you'd think he'd let a lame ass old punk like Retsudo beat him..PFFT!! Bullshzzle!!
In the comic I had, Retsudo didn't fight Lone Wolf on the beach. This actor doesn't look like the same one in Shogun Assassin. Who plays Lone Wolf in this?
Retsudo didn't kill himself!! He's alive, the ones dead are Itto n his son! What the heck is wrong with these version's film makers, they killed the story!!!
@manabara there is actually a sequel that has been released over the last ~5 years in Japan, hopefully soon it will come to America translated. It takes off right after the final battle between Yagyu and Itto and tells the story of what happens to Daigoro. Sorry to spoil that part of it for you but I know I was glad to find out that Itto did in fact crush his enemies in the end.
@cryjesuscry oooooo this i like :) it's good that u told me of this n m looking fwd for it. Daigoro's too good to die ... i'm relieved and happy... i get to see the continuation of Itto's saga, n thank you :D
This Diagoro is so lame not like the original at all!!! Frankly, I changed my mind, this version sucks :( It's a disgrace to koike's wonderful story!!
How come the final conflict's at the seaside? Why both retsudo n itto are young in this adaptation?! Where's the eye-patch for retsudo? Why does itto have very long hair? It should be shorter! Where's the shogun and his men? They should be observing the showdown. What's up with the bob hairdo for diagoro? Straying from the original works of koike, how sad... :( Still I like this version too, it had its good moments... :)
Seriously, this is garbage. I can see why it was rare- had they actually tried to peddle this as an accurate adaptation, the producers would have been laughed out of Japan.
Daigoro with hair and Itto Ogami younger!? Hey, i digging i hole in here, WTF?, i mean, after "white heaven in hell" goes this one?, i think there was a television serie, i am right?. Greetings from Argentina!
Yeah, this is totally lame-ass. Retsudo of the manga is the epitome of the badass old master, not some lame-wad salt n pepper hair (where's his sweet Tsuba eyepatch?). And Itto is supposed to be the stoic, invincible incarnation of the samurai ideal, not this simpering member of 'A Flock of Sea-gulls". Holy crap, this remakes always fuck everything up.
They stayed true to the cinematography, but the fighting bothers me. The choreography in the original, as well as the performers, fought like they actually knew traditional koryu bujutsu. Here, it seems to be more about flair than good solid fighting, which is what really drew a lot of people to it.
I won't even comment on how they treated the story, but I got a little teary when Daigoro tried to get the Dotanuki, then went for the spear, like his first thought was to finish the fight. 'too bad it sure didn't end like the comic.
read up :), the real final battle starts in ch 136 but you should probably read most of the manga to get whats going on, or if you only want to see the fight between retsudo and itto, thats ch 139, but itto has fought quite a bit up till then
@britpod the older TV series is a more emotional portrayal and a well done one at that,as he seems to grow more stoic, distant and cold as the seasons progress
@britpod LOL! I know right..Tomisaburo Wakayama was the Perfect "Ogami Itto" this guy is kind of an emo wuss..And I disagree with you on Retsudo ..the original was the embodiment of pure evil...this look like it lacks the punch of the film series from the 70's just my opinion
originals are ok, this is pretty poor. Would have thought it would be really good, very poor swordsmanship too. Original Ogami Itto is better, this is pure crap
I did like the Magna better because it seems more action-packed, restudo is older but its better at the end that, he let Diagoro kill him once he realised he lost his clan and since being old he'll die soon, then Diagoro kills him with the spear and in the last sence Restudo says "Grandson of my Heart" that was a perfect ending.
These guys suck bad. Where's Ogami's deadly metsuke (perceiving eyes) ala Tomisaburo? The distancing is all wrong (too close!). Both men look gay. What a disgrace for the manga's legacy! HOW THE HELL CAN A SPEAR BREAK A DOUTANUKI LIKE THAT!?!? Wrestling with weapons like that - where's the tecnique? Where's the Suio-ryu? Even the 9=70's movies had some Suio techniques in it.
No conozco ninguna tecnica Suio-ryu llamada "Namikiri no tachi". De que categoria pertenece? Tachi-iai, Kenpo? Kumi-iai?
Umm, the Doutanuki broke because the Yagyu tampered with it. Ogami had his sword polished (i.e., sharpened: after all those fights the edge probably dulled a bit), but the sword polisher was in the pay of the Yagyu. There were microscopic flaws put into the sword so when the final duel with Retsudo happened, the blad broke.
Or (if there are real Yagyu around out there), Retsudo would have used his grandfather's (Yagyu Muneyoshi) technique which was used to split a rock in two.
retsodu isn't that young. and ogami's hair isn't that long. and neither did his dotanuki broke off like this. geez.. read the manga before making the show man.. ur making die hard ogami fans laugh.
I know how you feel. The original manga is always better than any film. And sometimes its irritating to see how people mess with masterpieces.
But this one wasnt bad at all. The fans criticized this because of details like Ogami not saying "Meifumado" and Daigoro not having his buggy. But it was Kazuo Koike's idea (the author of the manga) who also colaborated in the story line. So it will be weird to say read the manga to him. He also said this is the Lone Wolf~ film he likes the most.
By the way,I've got the VHS of this version at Y$500 from yahoo auctions and sent it to be made into DVD. Thanks for your kindly help
The manga was way better,Ogami dies on his feet with Retsudo clutching his blade in his bare hands, then Daigoro grabs the spear tip and runs him down.Retsudo spreads his arms and lets the kid kill him.He saw that he had lost everything, the Itto clan had won.But thanks for uploading this,I wish I could get in in the states.

Itto in this version seems like he'll drop his dotanuki at any point so that he can partake in some crying.
I wouldn't mind a more emotional Itto if it was believable, but this Itto somehow being able to fend off the entire Yagyu clan doesn't cut it.
Retsudo is a more interesting adaption than Itto in this film.
I'm currently working on polishing up the video abit and re-syncing it, when it's done I'll up a couple more clips.
We need the 2002-2004 series to be uploaded!
